A serious theory - They show Dexter lying in the snow, he becomes unconscious, they cut to a flashback from Season 1 with Dexter explaining how the cold slows the flow of blood, has some dream flashes of his brother Brian as the Ice Truck Killer, before he wakes up in a hospital handcuffed to a bed with Batista sitting in the room at the foot of his bed and Angela looking down at him.

During the beginning of New Blood all that scenes he was in were dead silent because he was following his 10 years old routine and keeping his mind focused on his day to day activities. Once he knocks out Matt and gets ready to end him... his inner voice starts narrating again, almost like this act of violence awakened it.

With Michael C. Hall’s comment, “it’s really cold out there”, he’s clearly referring to the fact that his blood thickens and that the loss of blood would be minimal to the point where he wouldn’t die of blood loss. It did look like a shot right into his heart but my guess is that it barely missed his heart, otherwise he’d be dead. It’s ridiculous to think he hallucinated the ending, considering his comment with Variety.

My thoughts: Dexter survived somehow, its just the last bit of whatever empathy he had was killed that day. He is now a full on emotionless killer. All season the rationale in him, the code, tries to resurface but it doesnt manage to quite sneak through all season. Leaving us with a season of ruthless murder machine dexter. Then by the end he may be in a situation where he has to kill someone like Angel or Mazuka, here he realizes that they don't meet the code and he cant justifiably kill them. The code is now back in him and he surrenders to one of them. What happens next is up to the writers (and execs); prison, death or escape

Here's how he returns: So what if he was shot in the heart? What if he woke up finding himself in an apartment, then there was a cassette tape on the table saying "play me", and in the video a mysterious masked man says he needs to keep his adrenaline up or he'll die. Then Dexter tries drugs but it's no good. In his panic he kills a bad guy trying to mug him and then realizes killing makes his adrenaline go up so he goes on a killing spree. And then in the end he finds out the mysterious guy was also a serial killer and they have a crazy fight where they end up falling out of a helicopter. Then while falling, Dexter calls his son and has a 5 minute conversation saying goodbye before falling onto a car and bouncing onto the street. The camera zooms in on what looks like a dead Dexter, but in the final frames, he breathes and blinks before going to black, hinting at another season or two.

This is the plot for a Dexter sequel that I think I not only could work but will give a thrilling and exciting follow up to his saga. Dexter didn't die after Harrison shot him so he is taken to prision while expecting his trial. But one of those days some MIB come over to visit him him and offer him a job as a hired hitman for the some 3-letter gvt. agency; say, Dexter Bourne but one that actually loves his job. Dexter takes the offer and he is given a new identity, they switch his FPs with those of a deceased man, and he gets a new life story and some minor face changes. The news will say that he commited suicide in his cell and so all his cases will be dropped, That plot line has already been proposed, but here is what I propose: While doing his job, killing the assigned victims, provided that somehow they fit Harry's code, Dexter has to deal with a new and mortal danger. Batista, Quinn and maybe Elway also. Batista never exactly bought the 'Jeffrey Epsteining" of Dexter so he kept thinking in him while hating him for being the cause of the death of both Maria & Debra, and Doakes. And now as a retired cop he has lots of time to watch and analize the news. So he starts putting things together, which will be difficult of course given that Dexter's victims disappear, the reason why the gvt. loves him as a hitman. So his investigations will probably focus on people that have been reported missing. As the plot advances Batista comes gradually to the conclusion that Dexter is still alive and that he keeps killing people, but he must be doing it now for some powerful people. No matter, he still wants to get him for all the pain he caused, so when he thinks he had enough evidence ge is right, he contacts Quinn, who is now some FBI agent and they both start working as a team hunting down their former pal. Other possibilities is that both have their own PI office, or even that they work for or with Elway, who'll want to get Dexter also not only because of Debra but also because of all the money he lost with Hanna. In any case the 3 men will work now as a team hunting down a Dexter still at large. They know he is wll connected now and for that reason they can't arrest him, they have to simply eliminate him. This would give a set up similar to that of The Fugitive of the 60s, where doctor Kimble had to hunt for the killer of his wife while staying away for the cops hunting him. Dexter will have to go on with his gvt. job while staying out of reach for the trio. He may have informed his handlers of "the problem" but they have probably answered him "You deal with it yourself, it is your problem and you know HOW to deal this kind of problem". That I thinks gives for a thrilling, exciting new series. The only thing missing would be a love interest...or maybe not.

Slightly off topic: I am rewatching Dexter, and I started interpreting things weirdly, in a spiritual and supernatural way. Like the dark passenger, harry, and after each death of his victims, the recessions that face after and how they link to the prior killers. That’s when I heard that 1. Dexter was originally a book, and 2. The third book is all about the supernatural aspect!!! What!!! So yeah gonna check that out cause I know all about the moloch stuff, more than I should, so I started to see it peek thru immediately after rewatching as an adult. Gimmeabreak. The "It was only a dream, Uff..." is a lame overdone cop out ever since they did it in Dallas. The only way out is that they actually turn him into a killer of sorts, Dexter Bourne but this one who actually lovres his job. On the other hand people readily assume that if Dexter has to face the criminal system he'll be automatically be condemned to death or life but that trial could turn into something completely different. Just remember that all the people he killed as the BHB were scum, people who their own blood hated. The first guy who gave Debra the idea these victims were of that ilk was the son of one of them, who snapped at her comforting words: "I only want to make sure he is dead so me and my family can finally live in peace". No matter what happens in the court Dexter will become a fol;k hero for many and the current of public sympathy towards him could become ovewhelming even more if he tells of those people dont know, as Trinity. BTW, there was a guy in Brazil who did the same thing, they even called him the Brazilian Dexter, he confessed 71 killings confirmed, more than 100 possible. he was condemned to 30 years and he finally did only 8 and was released for good behavior in 2018.

So lets say dexter got shot in the lung not the heart he immediately gets transfered to the hospital and spends time in custody recovering and then has to stand trial for the murder of logan and the bay harbor butcher accusations, bring back old characters to speak out for or against him and have the trial spark nation wide controversey about wether or not he deserves life in prison or lethal injectjon and after hes sentenced to death have a high up goverment official bribe the warden to release him to his custody and have Dexter Morgan be labeled as dead by means of execution and now hes offered a job as a politial assassin where he gets to take out bad guys and indulge his dark passenger with a handler, have him travel the country and the world like a spy investigating and assassinating people who have gotten away with crimes or have gotten off due to insufficent evidence and run that for a few seasons until he wants to retire at which case he trains a replacement like Zack in season 8 and then upon retirement he moves to Argentina like he wanted to and then he decides to visit Hannahs grave only to find out shes still alive and Harrison lied and ran away and it gives dexter and hannah the ending they always wanted. The 2nd to last season could involve him tracking an unknown killer whose working with the same code and M-O that dexter implemented only to find out its Harrison, after refusing to kill his son he could fake it to his handler as if the job is done and it could be what prompts his retirement and desire for a replacement in the system. Run original sin for 1 season, run resurrection for 3 and leave room for a harrison spinoff if they manage to redeem his character in the eyes of the audience. Itll satisfy the audience by giving dexter consequences and we get to watch his former friends and allies react to his crimes, they dont need to kill him for a 3rd time and it allows dexter to release himself from his dark passenger and live the life he dreamed of since the moment he met hannah. Watch the money roll in.
