After the ending of New Blood, I decided to go back through the original series. Before, I was having trouble deciding whether or not I liked season 1 or 2 more, but I think I've settled on season 1. Watching the show over again helped me figure out why I was so disappointed by the ending of New Blood. I discovered that the first 4 episodes of the series are probably the most important episodes in terms of character development for Dexter. The first 4 episodes establish that Dexter has a need to kill, but he only kills people who hurt other people. They establish that Dexter believes he's incapable of feeling compassion or empathy, but then they immediately start challenging that idea. The show establishes that the Ice Truck Killer's goal is to prove to Dexter that the code is only a hindrance and its only purpose is to serve Harry more than Dexter. He attempts to do this by trying to get Dexter to kill an innocent person. But Dexter refuses and decides for himself that he doesn't want to kill innocent people. The attempt to turn him into the villain of the entire series fell short for me because it sacrificed the most interesting aspect of the character. He watched his mother get chopped to pieces when he was a child, and it set in him a need to do the same thing to criminals. Dexter didn't require poetic justice because he was poetic justice. I know that there are a lot of people who like the ending of New Blood, and I'm not trying to diminish anyone's enjoyment of it. I'm just trying to explain adequately why it disappointed me. There are, of course, some holes in the plot as well as the themes, but at least for the time being, I'm less concerned about those than the points I've brought up about Dexter's character. The most important thing for me in any story is the characters. People sometimes think I'm trying to ruin their fun when I bring up issues with plot, theme, and character, but all I'm trying to do is make sense of it myself. I think objective quality is important but not nearly as important as subjective opinion. But hey, at least Clancy Brown was awesome.
@vida3814
@vida3814 3 жыл бұрын
I don't find your explanation adequate at all. You're putting everything based on the first 4 episodes, how about Dexter's involvement in killing Doakes, Rita, Laguerta, Liddy, and DEBRA? After season 2 when he deliberately framed Doakes "never get caught" became more important than "never hurt an innocent" and of course he hurt many innocent lives in different ways. One example, Rita's children who had to grew up without their mother and father, Harrison...

I liked the ending and I agree with you on this, Dexter New Blood needed at least 3 seasons to see that transformation of Dexter from anti hero to villain, maybe his death wouldn't have hurt so much to me if they would've done this. Dexter is such a complex character, I hope to see a reboot in the future but damn is going to be so hard to find someone as good as Michael C Hall for this role.
@Brandon_Powell
@Brandon_Powell 3 жыл бұрын
@@vida3814 Dexter wasn't really involved directly with killing Doakes. Lila is responsible for the actual killing. Sure he took advantage of his death but that's not really the same as killing him. For the record I don't think Doakes should have died. I think he should have discovered what Dexter was doing and turned his head the other way. There are several instances in the first season where Doakes becomes frustrated with the failure of the Justice system and takes matters into his own hand Including killing a man outright. I could easily see Doakes acting as a watchdog over Dexter to make sure he didn't take an innocent life or interfere with an investigation so he could claim a victim. That could have led to some pretty interesting situations. Really the only difference between Doakes and Dexter other than some of the squeamish finer details is the fact that Doakes had permission to kill people and Dexter didn't. And Dexter was in no way involved with killing Lundy. Lundy was killed by Arthur Mitchell's daughter because he was investigating Arthur. His death can't be linked to Dexter in any way. I'm guessing Clyde Phillips was hoping people wouldn't think about that when he threw that into New Blood. Laguarda and Deb you have a case for but I'm reluctant to take into consideration anything from those seasons because that's long after the show lost sight of what it was supposed to be. Hell I had stopped watching by then and I still haven't watched those episodes. I still won't. With Deb though again I can see how Dexter is responsible in some way but I am very reluctant to add other people's victims to his list. Firstly and most importantly because that absolves the people who actually killed them of responsibility. And secondly because if we start pulling on that thread then there are plenty of other heroes in other properties that suddenly become villains because their actions led to other people being harmed. Or their inactions which leads us to Rita. Firstly I never felt that Dexter needed punishment for the part he played in Rita's death because Rita's death was his punishment. And secondly I'd like to point out that Rita died because he didn't murder someone. His mistake wasn't targeting Trinity. It was getting too close to Trinity and letting him live. I also don't think it's fair to add Rita's children to that list. They certainly suffered for what happened to their mother but to say that's the end of it ignores the fact that Dexter, Astor and Cody all came to terms with the death of Rita and reconciled at the end of season 5. And because of that I think season 5 should have been the series finale. Season 5 was about him discovering that he actually did love Rita but he discovered it too late. And then he meets Lumen and for the first time he uses his Dark Passenger not to avenge the dead or satisfy his own needs but to show empathy and find peace for someone who's still alive. And in doing so he comes to terms with his grief for Rita and reconciles with the children. It would have been the perfect finale.

Good point about this not being the same Dexter as he was in Miami. Although he is doing many of the same old tactics to blend in, the fact that Deb is now his inner voice and not Harry does indeed represent a shift in his personality. Back in season 6 when Dexter was visualizing Brian Moser he was wildly different.

Also what about the GIANT plot hole of Kurt finding out that dexter killed his son???? Maybe I missed something but that made ZERO sense to me! Like he was able to piece it together because it was snowing ash outside which conveniently prompted him to go check the towns furnace for some reason. Then he conveniently found the metal pins which immediately prompted him to search the numbers on them to find out they were his sons because “why not”. And For some unknown reason Kurt immediately was able to link it all to Dexter just because he was “driving around that night”

Great work here, I was hoping you would change my mind about the end, but you didn’t, yes Dexter had to die and it seemed apparent Harrison would do it, but Dexter killing Logan in cold blood was out of character, Harrison now has to live the rest of his life knowing he killed his father. Angela lets a murderer (Harrison) leave town free and clear plus meddles with the crime scene. Her ‘solving’ the bay harbor butcher case was ridiculous. The season had far too many loose ends, plot holes and inconsistencies to even begin to list. Your ‘montage’ at the end was fantastic.

Nice vid Geoffrey, I mostly agree with your take on things! I think the idea that Angela solving the case is 'too easy' is ridiculous, Dexter may have gotten away with the BHB by the skin of his teeth in season 2, but as soon as you find out that he's changed his identity and lied about so many things, and he's got connections to the case and some evidence that he's dabbled in murder, it's an easy connection to make. The only thing that sours it is the ketamine thing, I read in some behind the scenes thing that this is because M99 and Ketamine have been mixed up in real life but, eh. In terms of Edward Olson, my pet theory is that there was originally some cabal involved in the murder of the women, that was edited out for whatever reason. When Kurt is on the table, it seems like he's trying to awkwardly take responsibility for everything in a way that screams that he's covering something up. Maybe he was letting Olson and his rich friends erm, 'use' his collection? Anyhow, there are two main reasons for the backlash to the finale. One of them, which I am more sympathetic to, is the desire to see Dexter on the run for a few episodes/or a season. This is what many of us wanted back in the day, and maybe it would have been good in New Blood, but I think perhaps the ship sailed on that outcome back in the original run. The other reason is that, as you can see from some of the comments on this video is that many fans haven't come to terms with the fact that Dexter is not a good guy. As you point out, Dexter is not really a vigilante, he's a psycho who likes to kill people, he just happens to focus his rage on other killers. This nuance is at the heart of all the good series of the show and unfortunately, it's lost on the people who still him as a superhero. Anyway, great series of vids, made the viewing experience even better!

Thank you for this brilliant blow by blow!! I understand the ire of the community - They brought Dexter back to break our hearts all over again, but the other complaints are all over the place. This Dexter only seems out of character because the audience didn't expect him to have changed at all in the last ten years. The audience is expecting him to be following a code he abandoned a decade ago. This audience was mislead right from the start. The writers had a story they wanted to tell, but they fed it to the community as though this would be an epic comeback. Instead it was devastating. That being said, I think we the audience have also struggled not only to grieve this character, but recognize that just because we love a monster doesn't make them any less monstrous! He was charming and handsome and if he didn't only kill bad guys, many of us would have been lured right into his trap! But especially thank you for emphasizing Angela and her ability to put the puzzle pieces together. Don't underestimate a small town cop! They have nothing but time and attention span to notice inconsistent details!

@Melissa Faye He is a monster though. It’s not like he genuinely wants justice for victims and to make sure people aren’t harmed again. He loves killing, he loves tearing limb by limb apart, he loves putting them in bags and dumping it. It didn’t matter whether Harry taught him the code or not, he still would’ve killed whether it was innocent people or criminals. The Code is just a fake reason for killing. Now I’m not saying it’s his fault for the darkness put inside him, he literally watched his mother get chopped up into pieces. The show definitely did a good job into fooling fans into believing Dexter is a good guy. I also don’t blame you or the fans. I was pretty fooled into believing that Dexter was a great guy who cleaned up the streets but he’s not. He’s not a great guy. He just loves killing. I think Angela was too much of a Mary Sue and it wasn't believable that a small cop town could crack the case so easily. She should have played a crucial role in Dexter's downfall, but Dexter is a formidable opponent. There should not have been 1 character who takes him down, but multiple characters and events beyond Dexter's full control. Molly should have played a bigger role and should have been in town only for the BHB case. Just have Angela arrest Matt's friend, he spills the beans that Matt killed 5 people, Molly who never believed Doakes was the BHB is interested to learn more. Maybe you could say Kurt played a role in Dexter's downfall, but it doesn't feel like it's enough. Angela googling shit was LOL, go for the official BHB reports, you're a cop! Bring back Quinn as an FBI agent, he was suspicious of Dexter and almost certainly knew he was the BHB by the end of Season 8 if he didn't since Season 5. Have that oil billionaire Ed Olsen be a big bad and independently discover through his own resources that Jim=Dexter=BHB when he investigates who killed Kurt, who we'll say is his pet. Make Olsen the true mastermind behind the runaways with Kurt killing the women and Olsen producing snuff films for the Dark Web. Angela herself should have experienced some adversity before being vindicated about Dexter in the end, maybe she arrests Dexter at one point but has to let him go because there's no evidence and it impacts badly on her career because nobody believes her at first, that sort of thing.

There is a huge time gap at the end. Angela sends the photo to angel at 11.45pm. The email timestamp tells us this. She then interviews Dexter and immediately leaves to find the bunker. Dexter escapes almost immediately after, we know this because Angela calls the other cop and asks if he's heard from logan on the last hour....she must have only been gone an hour at most. Yet Dexter tells harrison to hurry, sun's coming up......what, at 1am? The next scene Angela is back at the station and finds logan, it's still dark. Could only be 2am if she was an hour away. The sun rises in upstate new york on December 26th at 7.15am. So where did 5 to 6 hours go? And how did Angela find Dexter? I know he took a police car. As always your takes are spot on! I loved your dissection of the criticisms and your rebuttal. I enjoyed the entire season and the finale. As most of the comment section is saying, I agree it's not better than Season 1-4 of Dexter, but better than 5-8. Also, one minor pet peeve of mine is that we never got any real resolution on what happened with Hannah. I know Harrison made some off-hand comments, but I think we deserve a bit more.

We didn't get to know anything from Harrison's past and that wasn't the focus of the season, they wanted to wrap-up Dexter's life story. I think we can imagine that Harrison is not normal because of how good he lied and made a scene that destroyed Ethan's life and made him a hero😬 They probably left that out for an opportunity of another season. I personally would prefer another movie/season if it's back in Miami, some of the old cast members trying to find out how Dexter did what he did for so long.

I'm baffled that anyone likes this ending at all. I think you're literally the only person on the planet that thinks so other than the writers. I was able to effectively counter each and every one of your points as to why you thought was good. Of course I'm not going to do that because it'd take way too much time, and no one would read it anyway. Instead, I urge you to watch other people's opinions on why this is easily one of the weakest seasons of Dexter as a whole. There are many instances of off characterization, plot holes, lose ends, rushed scenes, forced scenes, plot convenience, and inconsistencies though out the show. Watch the original series again and seriously analyze his character, then jump right into New Blood. You'll find that there are way more things wrong with it than good.

The entire Dexter New Blood ending is a cheap ripoff of Breaking Bad's ending. Harrison freaking out about Dexter killing Logan, is exactly like Skyler freaking out about Walter and Hank in Ozymandias. And then the main character (Walter/Dexter) dies while their accomplice/apprentice (Harrison/Jesse) escapes in a car. It is so bad I would argue that it borders on unprofessional standards or even plagiarism.

Having Harrison kill Dexter is such a let down. Totally the worst possible, most obvious ending they could have gone with. I'd have preferred seeing Harrison being unable to kill Dexter, and instead knocking him out with the butt of the gun and having him arrested. Then the next season could have been about his court cases, seeing his case play out while also looking at his life in jail/death row. We could have closure with the whole cast, and we could still get to see Dexter work with his dark passenger to take out convicts/guards until he's convicted and sentenced to death. Maybe he could have an Ace lawyer as well who even gets him out on bail at the beginning of his arrest so he can have a few more kills/try to stop those who have key pieces of information tying him to the BHB. I think they wasted Harrison as the anti-Dexter, and instead had him become what Dexter wanted all along, a killer. You say it's a redemption, I say it's a slap/spit in our face instead of a goodbye. Harrison was an innocent baby at the end of the previous Dexter series, and now he's a broken young man and a killer (who killed an unarmed man who posed no threat to him) just like Dad always wanted. In fact, Dexter got exactly what he wanted, a way out of facing true Justice, and his son becoming a killer. This ending is disgusting!

A trial season would have been interesting to watch, but he shouldn't have killed Logan that way then. No judge is going to grant bail in case where there's strong evidence that the suspect killed a cop to break out of jail. So make the Logan kill less obvious, maybe the FBI want Dexter in the bunker to explain to them something, Logan is tasked with transporting Dexter, Dexter causes the car to crash but there's plausible deniability because it all looks like a traffic accident. The Logan murder charge doesn't stick for long, which only makes Angela angrier who's almost certain Dexter killed him.

This was laughably bad...I will go on pretending the 1st horrible ending was the series finale because as bad as it was it was still better than this New Blood junk! Policing was beyond terrible and with what was presented to us there's is less than a zero percent chance Dexter would hv ever even seen a trial, much less convicted on Matt Caldwell case. And as bad as those connections were there was an even more futile chance to convict him as the BHB. Dexter was uber smart and there's no way in the world he would have stooped to killing an innocent when he knew he'd be released soon anyway. And where was the dire need to get out? Making it seem like he had to get to Harrison... Why? He had food & a place to stay. Kurt was dead, so he wasn't in danger. It just made no sense for him to try to escape.

I don’t 100% agree with you on everything, but I feel like you’re closer to right than most of the Dexter spin-off haters out there. Dexter was never a totally realized serial killer; there were always aspects of his schtick that I didn’t buy. But at the end of the day, serial killers tend to spiral out of control and become much less careful if their killings continue long enough, and especially if they continue long enough and involve decade-long breaks in activity. Everybody saying, “The Dexter we all know would have never done X!!!1” seem to be ignoring the normal trajectory of an unchecked serial killer. Look at BTK: out of action for a decade or so, he starts flirting with coming out of retirement, and, boom, he slips up in some really stupid ways and now he’s doing time in jail! Also, Dexter intentionally killing an innocent person in cold blood finally gave us an answer to the central question that the show had been toying with and avoiding answering throughout the entire original run: was Dexter a good guy doing unpleasant things to people who all inarguably deserved it or was he a basic sociopathic serial killer who had charmed America with plausible explanations for his depravity? When the answer turned out to be the later, a lot of fans seemed to be outraged. But the reality is, the original run of the show utterly avoided its basic responsibility to eventually resolve that question one way or the other. That was clearly one of the justifications for even having this sequel series. Now, I do think there were major pacing issues in this season; Harrison’s development was really uneven and I don’t think they fully explained him turning on his father, but…they had one season to give us a conclusion! They had a lot of stuff to do. Killing Dexter was certainly a kind of cop-out and precludes any further exploration, which is frustrating. The oil baron guy being a complete red herring and then unceremoniously disappearing from the show was bizarre. The “I got shot in the leg with a high powered rifle one episode but we will never mention it again the very next day and I’ll be walking around like normal the very next day” was insane garbage; if I stub my toe badly enough, I’m limping for a couple days, let alone a bullet wound! But I think the creators achieved most of what they set out to achieve in a largely smooth manner. It wasn’t a perfect season; it wasn’t up there with The Wire or The Sopranos or even The Shield; but it remained quintessentially Dexter, which was never that serious of a show to begin with. Also, I agree: Masouka and Quinn are the two original characters from the original show who desperately need more screen time. Masouka could absolutely carry his own spin-off, I would absolutely be there for that.

Well, you're definitely wrong on that, I have a pretty elaborate theory on how they could have written the story to please the fans, I posted it on FanFiction if you wanna read it cause it's too long for KZbin comments. To sum it up, more than anything the fans wanted closure, so this season should have been about what Dexter has been doing for the past 10 years, where he is at right now, what happened to other characters, and ultimately, Dexter being finally exposed as the BHB and seeing everyone who knew him react to that. And going out with a bang regardless if he died, got arrested and sent to prison or something far more crazy and over-the-top happened like being recruited by the CIA as an assassin, spared a fate of life in prison or death. Many issues with other characters remained unsolved, for example, what did Miami Metro characters do about Debra's sudden disappearance? What happened to Elway, Batista, Quinn, Masuka and others? Did Quinn know Dexter was the BHB and, if so, what was his motivation for tolerating his behavior? Did that change with Debra's disappearance? Quinn in New Blood could have made an interesting friend/foe to Dexter with his grey moral compass.

Another thing the fans don't want is a character hyped as a potential villain (maybe the most dangerous Dexter has faced) only for him to disappear. I'm talking about Ed Olsen. They mentioned on the official podcast that killing Logan wasn't intentional. Dexter overreacted (or maybe just reacted) to the gun being fired at him. Regardless, I DO think it would have been in character to kill him. Dexter's gone off code before, and at this point he was a cornered animal and willing to do anything to get away. Maybe its a bit of a stretch, but it's a better explanation than why the bullet wound in his leg was miraculously healed the next episode lol

But slowly throughout the rest of the first 8 seasons, he had moments were innocent people got killed either directly by him, or because of his actions, and his remorse for the innocent losses became less and less. I started to watch your video in hopes maybe you can change my mind about the ending, but I had to stop at 9:42, after you started to justify and defend the biggest, dumbest plot hole in the show. Miss Sherlock Holmes' aka Angela's BHB investigation ... Dextrer's Iron Lake victims didn't even fit into the BHB profile, there was no pattern to tie him to the Miami murders BECAUSE Matt as far as Angela knew was an innocent man (the boat thing was an accident and he didn't even drive), Miles was a criminal but not a murderer and the same goes for Jasper. The BHB killed killers in Miami that was his modus operandi, his trademark - Angela's conclusion felt forced, unnatural. Oh, 2 random poeple died in my town!! ONLY the BHB comes to mind as a suspect,,? really? Why? I know ... for the sake of the PLOT. I'm jealous that you enjoyed, I wanted to feel the same way.
@diogosimao
@diogosimao 3 жыл бұрын
I think that the missing piece of the puzzle here is Dexter. The similarities between her case and Miami case were the M99/Ketamine and the wheel marks (for the sake of the argument, let's assume they are the same). These two things, alone, are not sufficient for anything. But then...Dexter is a link. If you have murdered people with M99/Ketamine and wheel marks in Miami, and if you have murdered people with M99/Ketamine and wheel marks in Iron Lake, and if the same person who was in Miami is in Iron Lake...and if you just have been told that Dexter was a suspect in the BHB case...well... you just need to put one and one together at this point.

This series (Dexter original and new blood) had so much potential, the concept is just so great in terms of actual plot and the moral conflict that the audience goes through, but I feel like they never really knew where to go with it in terms of an overall theme or message, or where to take Dexters development, and it left it feeling kind of stagnant throughout. Don’t get me wrong the series was great seasons 1-4, and the rest was entertaining enough, but it could’ve potentially been one of the best series ever made if they just took the time to plan it out and figure out their goals with the show, that’s where my disappointment comes from.

She was the closest person to Dexter and was able to connect the dots in a way no one else could.

I didn't find Harrison unlikable, he was just a teenager with many problems behind his back before meeting Dexter, he was in foster homes, he was almost raped, he did drugs, Harrison lived a hell before meeting Dexter, I felt sorry for him, I hope he can have his happy ending unlike his father and uncle.

Peace; Bergen County’s Finest!!! I must disagree with you Batista & Dexter needed at least 2-3 minutes screen time. I believe the payoff would have been solidified on screen between the two. The fans wanted to peruse the reaction of his step children; former colleagues; etc! The finale was rushed and they owed us 2 hours to wrap this series. Im good with Dexter’s demise; it’s the methods used to get there. Actually Dexter did vet Matt. Remember Logan ran his ID and it didn’t come back squeaky clean? Combine that with the confession from his friend at the party. Lastly I believe Harrison set up Dexter to some degree. Who wrote the note Jim Lindsay killed Matt Caldwell. Yo your ending was awesome; kudos!

Your idea with Kurt being a citizen and becoming a monster after Dexter kills his son would've been amazing

I appreciate this explanation. I can see it now. But the show didn't execute these points well. Maybe too much time trying to trick and play picaboo with the audience.

The funny part about this video is how you argue with yourself and lose on the "super cop angela" part. she may not be a "super cop", but theres clearly too much forced plot direction, you say so yourself, shes just told everything she needs to be told very conveniently for no good reason. Harrison tells her he lies about his identity, the bs needle mark thing, which is so unrelated and general its ridiculous(why would you link that some corpses from miami when youre in upper new york? besides theres probably a plethora of occasions in which it happened even in miami unrelated to dexter), but my favorite is definitely molly just "got a weird vibe" from dexter, and essentially contributed nothing of substance to her, just some sort of admittance from the show writers they had no idea what to do there to keep the tension. realistically she wouldnt have figured it out and dexter would have killed her anyway, which is easily my biggest problem. strangely i watched new blood before dexter, and i gotta say from this perspective its definitely inconsistent. even putting aside how reckless and crude dexter is, especially considering the meticulous methods he uses in the original show, where he lives nothing to chance including if it means killing(or at least imprisoning) an innocent. other than that he was just plain stupid, dexter isnt an animal lacking self control, he never was. even when he did lose it he still managed to get it together and as he put it *instinctively* cover up his crimes (take for example s4e1 where hes so tired he doesnt remember what he does with a corpse but still perfectly hides it, and thats in crowded urban miami). in a different episode you said dexter is a monster, and i agree, bt the thing is that so is dexter. throughout the whole show he emphasizes that fact, which is why its so strange hes suddenly in denial of it now and trying to look like batman. dexter always said how he doesnt want to pass down his passenger to his son(repeated frequently in season 6) and essentially all throughout the show, he shows self loathing, often talking in his monologues about how he would deserve an execution, how hes a monster etc. with that said, if you take him for his word which is objective and critical of himself, hes a neat monster, not the goofball serial killer new blood had who leaves corpses as a staged crime or cremates them in the f*cking town square. thats not dexter and i dont consider it as such, and im not alone. theres a reason 90% of dexter viewers were dissapointed by new blood and youre missing it.
