It’s so cruel that networks can just take a creator’s work and give it to another animator to “revive” it. I wonder how the creator who originally thought of ideas for the show and created it from bottoms up feel about watching a copied version of his work that’s lower in quality and is just used for nothing more than gaining profit (tsk tsk Powerpuff Girls).

Regarding about the idea of Dexter being infallable (his creations always did what they were supposed to do, till DeeDee mucked with them), this is even reflected in the first few lines of the lyrics of the show's ending theme song. This said change in the Chris Savino series (Seasons 3 & 4) clearly contradicts the show's theme song, especially the first few lines of the song's lyrics.

A lot of S3 and S4 episodes include: Dexter imagining himself as a barbarian Dexter going to college Dexter using poetry to impress another girl Dee Dee bullying Dexter with her Judo skills Dee Dee dying Dexter's hair blonde Dee Dee babysitting Mandark Mom embarrassing Dexter during a Chess tournament They've even dedicated an episode explaining the day Mom and Dad first met. I even had a science book that I would constantly read. The seed was definitely planted in me, but unfortunately it never grew, due to my parents always constantly fighting until they divorced, throwing both my sister's life and I into a spiral. It makes me happy to know that there were other children like myself who were inspired by Dexter's lab, and who are able to carry on the torch in the name of science.

I think the show was meant to end with the movie because it detailed Mandark's rise into power as well as his downfall and it was interesting seeing all the Dexters fight their respective Mandarks for their timelines. If you don't want to include the movie the episode Last But Not Beast did provide the series good closure as various characters from various episodes banded together to fight a greater threat thus ending with an epic fight scene between the episodes main villain Badaxtra and Dexter's family. Dexter's Laboratory is an example of a show that was supposed to end but executives insisted to keep it going past it's intended ending leading to a rather average season that ended the series. Rather then ending with a bang like it's supposed to it just ended.
@iamjohnporter676 жыл бұрын
Yeah this is the same thing that happened with the more popular shows like Spongebob, The Simpsons, and Family Guy. Its like the writers wanted to end the show but they kept forcing new ideas to try and see how long they will last until people will stop watching so they can cancel it. To me that is a bad way to end off the series.

What's even more disappointing is that his original voice actress retired around the time they made the newer episodes and as good as his newer one was (she also did the voice for Coco and Cheese on Foster's), she just couldn't quite do the odd accent for Dexter. Oh, god, the yiffbait episode with Quackor and Monkey. That episode made me so uncomfortable as a kid. Thanks for bringing that repressed memory up. And honestly, I could have seen the Mandark laugh episode as fitting in with the original episodes, if they hadn't had his parents there or his villain suit on him. Basically what happened to SpongeBob from Seasons 5-8 happened here. Stephen Hillenberg (May he Rest In Peace) had less of an influence on that show around that time, which resulted in a massive nosedive in quality. Same thing happened with Dexter years before, but in this case Genndy Tartakovsky was completely gone and Chris Savino let an entirely new staff of writers. The first two seasons had Craig McCracken, Butch Hartman, and even Seth MacFarlane writing and storyboarding episodes, but they all moved on to make their own shows. Seasons 3 and 4 had very few of the original writers and felt like a totally different show, and I seriously disliked it. It’s a real shame because Dexter’s first two seasons are on par with SpongeBob’s first three seasons as my favorite cartoon of all time.

I think the naming of Mandark and dressing him in feminine clothes was a reference to a hippie wave that misunderstood the idea of raising your child genderless. Instead of letting the kid choose and grow into what they wanted a lot of parents pushed an opposite effect for their child. They encouraged or pushed their girls to like boys stuff and boys to like girl stuff. The idea behind it was the child would become more neutral by the counteracting interests but majority of what happens was kids growing up unhappy because they weren't allowed to choose their own toys/style. It could have just been something done for comedy, but I think there's a similarity there.

FINALLY! I meet a soul that can relate. When I was a child I was so bothered at the horrid redesign of Dad and since I was too young to understand the show was under a new studio all I knew was some episodes were good and some were god awful (as you described) - with bad writing, garbage backgrounds and much less fluid animation - for no clear reason whatsoever. I actually assumed that seeing the gross Dad was a sign that this is an older episode or something, before the showrunners got the hang of it. How ironic. This was a nice blast from the past + explanation of something I've forgotten to research myself but was interested in the early 2000's. I gotta back up everyone else tho, the Mandark laugh episode as annoying as it might be now was kinda funny and original back then. If anything it was worth it for the hilarious "chew chew chew!" part.

It's funny you should mention that mandark episode. As I was watching this dudes video and his discussion about seasons 3-4. my kind kept on referring back to that Mandark episode and how it was probably the only good/funny episode I've seen for seasons 3/4.

I don't even think they wanted to acknowledge seasons 3-4. All the re-airings show pretty much none of those episodes. The ducky and monkey thing could've actually been cute, but instead removing the dial m for monkey thing which literally went full circle within the original show crossover, we got something totally random, when an alleged villainous creature easily just could've turned good. Also, Mandark was honestly never that great of a character to begin with. His sister added in story, the hippie parents didn't. They also took Dexter from "I'm so smart, I think I'm better than everybody but keep to myself" to "Hey everybody look at me I'm a total jerk." Lastly, Mandark's stupid "redrawn" lair also looks like they ripped off samurai jack, which i doubt is a coincidence. It was the best animated thing there and should've been used for something way better.

To be fair, it was always at least hinted at that Mandark wasn't exactly a good person. He basically gaslighted Dexter into permanently shutting down his lab and then expected him to set him up on a date. In the movie even before the nuclear core thing fucks with his head, he plagiarises Dexter's work, murders the CEO of a company by pushing him out of a building and publicly tortures Dexter for almost being late to work, forcing him to live in a work cubicle for the rest of his life. Even the name Mandark is pretty edgy sounding and can't be a good sign when the mere mention of it causes dogs to go nuts and lightning to strike.

It's not uncommon for animators to change their art style from traditional to abstract, particularly when it comes to the background. It happened with the original Road Runner cartoons. A duck and a monkey falling in love is the least weird storyline I've ever witnessed - there's another cartoon where a human gave birth to a cow and a chicken. Her husband was so proud, he didn't care how. And hippies have been known to live in the suburbs, trust me, it's the inside of their houses that counts.

Wasn't there an episode in Cow and Chicken where it was revealed that Mom and Dad weren't their biological parents? I remember it was a flashback to when Cow was born, Dad was walking nervously in the waiting room then Mom suddenly came up to him and they had a casual conversation about something, and the overall idea was that they were both waiting for Cow to be born, and that it wasn't Mom who was pregnant in the first place.

Making the golf joke a whole episode kind of turns it into a shaggy dog joke. The frustration is the point, but you risk people just hating it because it's not their sense of humor and they can see how many corners you're able to cut. And it really stands out as not being an exercise in tension when you see all the other episodes alongside it that just pull the same stunt. Actually, as a kid I liked the Mandark episode. I can't explain it well, but the concept of "He has this weird laugh for some reason; what if his whole life revolves around that instead of something more natural" just really worked and I wanted to see how many things they could apply it to. That's not a defense, it's just something that happened.

I never noticed this when I was a kid. But I actually don't know if I saw the revival seasons. Sadly, this is what TvTropes calls Flamderization. Where things get more exaggerated. Mandark was an antagonist rival early on. Then a complete villain later. Plus Dexter getting more obnoxious. It seems almost no show goes without it happening in general, or to a character. Like The Powerpuff Girls. Him was supposed to be the GOAT of villains early on. When he called Mojo in Telephonies, Mojo jumps from his seat and addresses Him as "sir." Then later Him lost all his edge to being the "King of Darkness" and just become a Flamboyant goof. Seen perfectly when Mojo argues with him over who gets custody of the Rowdy Ruff Boyz.

Mostly I blame the rise of Flash Animation. It made cartoons way to cheap and easy and lead to some seriously lazy work. You don't need amazingly detailed animation with lovingly crafted backgrounds to tell a good and fun story. But the effort required does tend to put more weight into the "should we do this" over "can we do this". I don't know if the later seasons of Dexter's Lab used Flash, but it kind of looks like it. The rushed production time seemed to have led to far less per-screening of scripts and plot. There is a huge difference between an episode that might take a month to make vs one that is done in a week.

Well, not all Flash animations are bad. Some of them like Foster's Home Imaginary Friends, MLP (not my favorite show but my love-hate pleasure), Archer, etc. It could've done better if Flash will be used correctly and not to shoddy and poorly animated. Even animation errors, it's a thing. For Dexters, I'm still afraid that CN will going to reboot it and become one of the -Nazis- Animation Altrocities of Cartoon Network.
@JustaGuy_Gaming6 жыл бұрын
@@1010otep By and large the medium isn't the problem, it just doesn't help an already bad script. I was just saying flash made it far to easy to put garbage up on the screen, not that some people haven't done amazing things with the program. Here on KZbin alone there are thousands of nice little shorts with great idea's that wouldn't exist without Flash. Just in the case of a lot of shows from the late 90's and early 2000's they chose flash because it was the easiest, cheapest and fastest way to get things done. It meant they had no respect for the product they were creating and the rest of the production was done just as poorly.
