What you are doing is impressive. Just a comment for your safety. Ive been a machinist for over 50 years. Put some glasses on and lose the sleeves on your shirt . I had a friend have his shirt ripped right off of him because it caught a burr on the od of a shaft. Another guy lost an eye because of a broken center drill. Just my opinion. But nice work

I am a chemical engineer however my first love is welding and fabrication.I am starting a mobile welding business as well as fabrication and small engine repair. The small engine repair is mostly for construction and landscaping equipment. I specialize in obsolete machines and equipment. I am building a machine shop full of 1800's machines asns a central belt powered from compressed air and steam. I will hide the cnc in another building..lol

Love your channel. I am a machinist by trade and your videos are inspiring to watch! To see someone create such an impressive machine with rudimentary tools is awesome! Keep up the good work! (And invest in some eyewear, removing chips from your eye is painfully, ask me how I know.) I would also recommend you drill some locating pins to the bearing flanges so they don't shift if there are any excessive loads, or if you have to take them apart.

Respekt was du dir da gebaut hast.

Great results! Next step - make fast tool post. ;-) And by the way! You can get much more precise, if you will put your lathe on STABLE metal table. Do not use wood for it. Your machine it need REALLY syable base. You have band saw, weld machine and STRAIGHT HANDS(In Russia we told that, about peoples which do some job right ans good), so all what you need is go to scrapyard and found some metal parts. I am know it's not a cheap in Germany, but i guess you can to find something! Good luck! With this talents which you have - you will always can earn money! @@dexter1448 Thank you gor your reply. Now i see, it have wheels, for moving. Well... It's not a perfect solution, because all vibrations came from motor, to part. If you have stable and heavy base for machine, the most of vibrations are going to this base, and you can to increase spindle speed. Also it's give you nice and smooth "mirror like" surface. If it's start to make a money - it should be best is possible. By the way! If you can to add lubrication and cooling of your bearings, it will increase characteristics of your lathe. WBR Viktor

Very very impressive what you do with just basic tool to begin with!!!! We all look for that heavy, stable, huge lathe while you’re painting circles around many with a homemade lathe on a shaking frame!!!!!! You’re awesome, dude!!! One thing you did that I gotta comment is the fact that you made the flange to match the Chuck size perfectly but, in reality, every commercial lathe has a little play between the Chuck recess and the flange center with adjusting side screws so you can fine tune those differences you were fighting with the frame screws to be running true. If you leave a couple hundredths of a millimeter you can fine tune the Chuck to almost zero runout. Don’t take me wrong, you did it much better than I could, it’s just a matter of making it easier on you and increasing precision to your final product since you could get it very very close on the large frame bolts then really fine tune it with the flange screws. Watch a couple videos on installing a new Chuck it may be better than my explanation! Awesome! Awesome! Please, keep up your great work and don’t get mad at your dad! Wish mine were picking on me and joking about my endeavors but he never did so, consider yourself blessed that yours want to be part of your life!!!!

check your feed or sharpness of your tips, because so long maccaroni are no good, they should breake especially with carbide inserts. turning again after welding could check if there is no thermal deformation, because such thick metal always heat and cools in different rate - welds are pulling edges. especially if You would weld all around for stiffnes or for some rotating elements where rotating mass would be important. i dont get idea that many washers are better than two nuts, but one nut is always better with some locktite, or self-lokcing nut (theese with rubber gasket that grips on thread - vibration reduction as bonus)

for the future, maybe a gearbox, there's CHEAP cg250 gearsets on the jungle site, 5 speed, can toss the starter gear, though the clutch would be useful. 50-200$, i think the quality is hardly worth the crazy price range but it does save some time over building the whole thing, can focus on change gears for power feed.

On many commercial lathes such as Colchester and Harrison the tapered roller bearings are simply splash/drip fed with gearbox oil that gets lashed around by the gears. I don't think he will have any problems here so long as they get a bit of oil periodically. A drip feed system might be a good addition.

Was there no provision for grease seals to keep foreign materials from getting into the roller bearings? How do you grease the bearings? The bearings will soon run rough and accurate turning will be off the chart.

Everyone seems to suggest you drill some locating pins but no one suggested you do something to lubricate those bearings. They move great now but with use and without lubrication they will wear out fast.

ok, i'll be the bad guy. your stand is horrible , you need to make it as heavy and ridgid as you can. but, you've done a terrific job so far as i can see. keep up the good work.
