That's an African proverb. My mother had a book of African proverbs and I read it a couple of years before this album dropped... so I recognized that line immediately. It let me know how well-read Nas is. He dropped out of school in the 9th grade, so he's basically self-educated.

@@cibida1you're right. I misspoke. I meant to say that he was 19 when he wrote it. But I'm sure he had rhymes way before that. Nas starting recording Illmatic in summer of 92 at Chung King. He was 19. The album didn't come out until 94 at the age of 21.

Great video/channel…this song’s a classic, and Illmatic is my favorite hip hop/rap album of all time, and definitely in my top 5 favorite albums(regardless of genre. Please check out “Memory Lane” off the same album. He mentions some of those old kingpins that you mentioned. The 2nd verse in particular is one of the greatest verses of all time, imo.

Since you like NY outlaws, you ever heard of the original 50 Cent? He was a stick-up kid from Brookyln who used to rob rappers in the '80s. Word is that he robbed Big Daddy Kane and LL Cool J. That's why when the rapper 50 Cent came out, he dropped that song "How To Rob," in which he was robbin' rappers and other music industry folks, because that's what the real 50 Cent used to do in real life. After the real 50 robbed LL, he went to Alpo, who was his friend at the time, to get his chain back. I know more Alpo and LL stories that I won't get into here, because his fans might get their feelings hurt. I told one before and a dude got real sensitive.
