I come back to it every so often..it literally lifts me up every time...I liked come on Eileen as a 2nd grader when it was out, but here in New York I dont remember hearing Geno...I actually decided to listen to it about 10 years ago as I was watching old top of the pops episodes and the song instantly struck a chord...how it wasn't a bigger hit in the states ill never know. ..the brass section is so uplifting when paired with that chorus . this guy wrote 2 incredible songs...

This is (and always has been) beyond genius ... there simple are no words for how brilliant this song is .. the arrangement, the lyrics, the melody , the harmony ... the horn section et al It stands as a moment in our lives that may never be equalled for it's sheer ambivalence, nostalgic, bittersweet, wistful, tragicomic, rueful, melancholy, saudade, conflicted, and reflective

Back in '68 in a sweaty club Oh, Geno Before Jimmy's Machine and The Rocksteady Rub Oh, Geno On a night when flowers didn't suit my shoes After a week of flunkin' and bunkin' school With the lowest head in the crowd that night Just practicin' steps and keepin' outta the fights Academic inspiration You gave me none But you were Michael the lover The fighter that won But now just look at me As I'm looking down at you No, I'm not bein' flash It's what I'm built to do That man took the stage, his towel was swingin' high Oh, Geno This man was my bombers, my Dexy's, my high Oh, Geno The crowd they all hailed you And chanted your name But they never knew like we knew Me and you were the same And now you're all over Your song is so tame, brrrrr You fed me, you bred me I'll remember your name Academic inspiration You gave me none You were Michael the lover The fighter that won And now just look at me As I'm looking down at you No, I'm not bein' flash It's what I'm built to do Oh Geno, woah Geno Oh Geno, woah Geno

@fruitopia679827 күн бұрын
Remarkably this song was virtually banned in Australia, after some early airplay a rumour circulated that some of the lyrics may have breached censorship regulations at the time, apparently the lines "flunkin n bunkin school" and "you fed me you bred me" were mistaken for something else. I bought the 45 which I still have today but the song failed to make the top 40, it was a big hit in UK but in Australia its one of those lost classics only few remember.

We saw your actual real Geno Washington way back in 1967 (as best as I can remember!), at the Birmingham Town Hall and then Summerfield Teacher Training college, Kidderminster. Then to bring back memories we saw him at Cox's Yard, Stratford upon Avon in the late 00's. Brilliant high energy Geno with a high energy band. Sadly I think there is only one utube of him that I could find. Also sadly, Cox's Yard is no longer a band venue but just a bog standard steakbar. Saw some brilliant bands there in the day. Always been grateful to Dexy and co for paying homage to something from our youth. Rock on all!
