"Echo Beach" is a song recorded by Canadian band Martha and the Muffins in 1979. Written by band member Mark Gane, it was released as a single from their Metro Music album in 1980 and won the Juno Award for single from the 'year. It was certified gold in Canada on October 1, 1980, a month after Metro Music achieved gold status. Their best known title is Echo Beach; it is also the only one to have had real international success, although they have had several others in Canada. It reached No. 10 on the UK Singles Chart, and No. 6 on the Australian Singles Chart. While Echo Beach did not exist as a real location, it was a symbol of a place everyone wants to escape to when they're not where they want to be. The inspiration was Sunnyside Beach on the shoreline of Lake Ontario in Toronto.

I remember the backstory of how this song came to me. Martha & the Muffins had to travel to the United Kingdom to get the record deal. In early 1980, the album was released. This song went to #1 on the BILLBOARD UK chart. The song made it back to the group's native Canada and went to #4 on the BILLBOARD Canadian music chart. I think back to the Canadian pop music countdown show when I first heard the song. The summer of 1980, when anything was still possible. Too bad the end of the song came true. Both Echo Beach and the summer of 1980 are far away in time. But I can still reminisce. And that is what I will do.

For any Roxy Music fans out there....did you know that Martha Ladly (keyboard/vocalist) sang back up for Roxy Music?? Check out 1982 Live version of Avalon....

I know, for a second or two I thought it was Lala Ward.

There's another sort-of Roxy connection there - the singer, Jocelyn Lanois, is sister to Dan Lanois, who has done a load of work with Brian Eno...

No I did not! Thank you for that. Very cool tidbit (and one I'll be sure to mention, because, like you, I love information like that. Seems like DJs used to like it, too. Or like it more, at least.) 😎👍🏼 @hugh tuck What a tangled web we do weave, when first we practice to make art-house "savante" garde!

Loved this song, there's a Beachside Cafe in Bali, Indonesia called "Echo Beach" - the tagline 'Far Away in Time' - it can't be a coincidence!

Not surprised at all. This song was a huge hit in Australia (when visiting there in 1991-92, more than one person, on hearing I was Canadian, mentioned this band as one of the things they knew about Canada). And Bali is crawling with Aussies. On the darker side, I hear that this isn't the only Canadian export that made it to Bali via Australia; I'm told that the Rock Machine were established there for a while.
