Watching it live, as soon as they showed the replay, I knew it would be overturned and it was the correct call by the rule at the time. They changed the rule because of this moment and if the exact same play would happen now, they would rule it a catch. Personally, I lived the old rule because it was more definitive and the new rule leaves it to more interpretation

Reminds of the Niners vs Packers Playoff game where Terrell Owens became T.O. My favorite player on my favorite team (who became my friend in 2Oo4 when I worked at The Linc). The Catch II is a legendary football moment but never should’ve happened. On that final drive, Jerry the GOAT got his first catch of the game on a shallow drag route. He caught it, turned upfield, fumbled when the defender made contact, and GB recovered the ball. That was game over. SF didn’t have the timeouts to even get another chance… But it was ruled an incomplete pass. I love that moment for Steve Young- who finally got a W over his former coach/coordinator both in college at BYU and in SF (Mike Holmgren). And I loved it for T.O. whose career as a star was born that day. But I couldn’t fully bask in the Win knowing it shouldn’t have happened.
