I was an alectronics nerd and my first PC was a CHIP8 based system from an electronics magazine (ETI-660) and then the ZX80. I'd had the thing for nearly 6 months before I found out I could save programs to tape, instead of typing them in each day. I then bought a C64 and ZX Spectrum 48K and loved both of them. When it comes to what is "retro" I usually think if it's older than the last generation. So now that PS5 and XBox Series are out the PS3 and 360 becomes retro. This definition might become muddy going forward however with the new consoles basically being enhanced versions of the previous gen consoles. It also doesn't work on PC for a more extreme version of the same reason. Also I guess GTA V is a retro game now 🤷♀️

@@nigelo92 Many other areas define vintage as old and retro as new but emulating an older style. That's how the Vintage HiFi community I hang around use the terms for instance. So it's not like the definitions are hard and precise. So Shovel Knight would be retro but MegaMan is Vintage 😋 I also think that in both cases using technology that used to be default but has since been replaced is a good way to define retro/vintage. And GTA V and Last Of Us have graphics engines that are still quite modern with regards to how they create their graphics. If raytracing, Nanite or some other technology takes over as default then they become truly retro. These last two generations have been mostly just more flops for more pixels and more triangles 🤔

I stopped playing video games on a consistent level like a decade ago. My benchmark for retro would be the ps2 Xbox generation. I feel like from PS3 to PS4 not much really changed besides graphics. This current gen hasn't really started imo because of the lack of console availability. So yea, while PS3 and 360 games are old, they are contemporary in design I feel, so I wouldn't call them retro just yet.

The Diablo 2 remaster 21:9 issue is due to the original code not allowing mobs to detect or attack the player at the distance the 21:9 aspect ratio allows you to see drawn on-screen. The original game was coded around 4:3 aspect ratios and this problem never occurred. The problem with Diablo 2 remaster is that mobs at the edge of the screen do not react to the player and it looks bad/broken and the scope of the remaster doesn't stretch far enough to alter the AI being used that could fix this.

To add to this, the original game is literally running behind the scenes and they want to touch it as little as possible. It's not like they remade it entirely from scratch. It's mostly just revamping the visuals so that it can switch between old and new assets.

It's odd to me that the whole adverstisment campaign of GT7 was all about ray tracing and now we hear it will only be present in replays and photo mode. I bet everyone was expecting RT based off their trailers and it would've seemed feasible if they build on GT Sport, which the trailers suggest. Because apart from RT it doesn't look much different from Sport honestly. So sad that we had to wait this long for another Gran Turismo and now that the next-gen is out it will bascially be an improved PS4 version with slightly higer resolution and faster loading times. This classic franchise seems like in such a weird spot with Playstation. You would guess that they would go all out for a next-gen Gran Turismo.

What people aren’t appreciating is that ray tracing add a ton of workload on to a game for basically eye candy. When concentrating on the road and cars immediately ahead, ray tracing is not going to help you drive faster (probably hinder). I think the 120fps mode is sometimes just a crutch to avoid actually creating real next gen graphics. Far easier for devs to stick with a PS4/Xbox One level of detail, and just crank up the frames, while lowering the res. I'd rather next gen target 60, while also improving the visuals. Which I hope is what the Gran Turismo devs have in mind.

I think as long as a game is cross gen (or even if it's just targeting low end PCs as well) I'd like to see a 120fps option. For me at least, anything above 1080p looks fine at the distance I sit at as long as there's some good reconstruction. 120fps just feels better. It doesn't make a ton of sense for current gen exclusive games to try to target 120fps at all, because if that could actually be achieved, then the game could totally run on a PS4.

One more limitation of the Bluetooth headset implementation is that there is some audio delay & no correction. The delay can be pretty significant too.
@SNMG76643 жыл бұрын
That's not really a limitation of their implementation that's just a limitation of Bluetooth audio in general isn't it? You can't correct for games since you can't predict what the player will do next. Your PC and phone delay video content so the sound you hear matches up with the image. There are a few proprietary codecs and ways to massively lower audio quality to reduce latency but still those can't "correct" for games
@knightsabre2k3 жыл бұрын
@@SNMG7664 The delay in sound is consistent so software adjustments to account for the delay should be possible. If it was variable, then there would be an argument but regardless if that is happening in the game, if the sound is always a few ms behind what is shown on the screen then it should be possible to sync the sound & visuals a little better
@TarnishedGaming853 жыл бұрын
@@knightsabre2k Wouldn't that lead to massive input latency in the game though?
@knightsabre2k3 жыл бұрын
@@TarnishedGaming85 it depends on how they handle it. If they just delay the video to better sync to the audio, then that’s a brute force way to remove the audio delay but introduce input lag. But if they add support for some better codecs, then the lag will reduce that way. My understanding is that the switch uses SBC codecs & that will cause a lot of audio delay, tho it will also depend on the Bluetooth headphones you are using. That’s why ppl who use things like the genki Bluetooth adapter on their switch generally don’t have much of an issue with audio lag. But whether or not they can add support for the newer codecs is another matter all together. All I can say is that I used my RHA trueconnect 2 on mine using the new native support and the audio lag was horrendous. And the lag is a crapshoot now with some headphones and earpieces working decent enough while others are unusable.

Ontop of that Polyphonys lighting solution is already phenomenal without raytracing, look at GTSport, it’s stunning, raytracing is a buzz word and I think the solutions being used in some games are so good and so accurate that raytracing makes little difference to the faked lighting, we have to move away from this thing that every next gen game must employ ray tracing or it’s not next gen, next gen is about more than just tracing imo

First thing first... there is definitely a gameplay implication on screen aspect ratio. Not sure why it isn't obvious to them, but if you actually think from game design perspective, it is very obvious. This isn't about 16:9 vs 16:10 or 5:4 vs 4:3... this is about 16:9 vs 21:9. The difference is massive. Imagine making a strategy game with 16:9 and you expect it to scale to 21:9, then the game balance is thrown out of the window in favor of the one with the wider screen. You can make an argument that using a higher res display (like 4K) vs someone with 1080p is also not fair, but afaik, besides the extra clarity, you can see all the stuff that happens on 4K also viewable on 1080p. This is not only about strategy game tho. Any isometric kind of game can have a problem with it. When you design this kind of game, you want to limit the view of the player intentionally for gameplay purpose. You don't want player to be easily look really far. Even if the developer don't care about it, there is still an engine constraint where you want to focus your code on rendering what is in that 16:9 view and now you need to stretch it across the 21:9 screen so you need to make sure something doesn't break, enemy doesn't suddenly pop up, etc. Of course if the engine do accommodate that, then it ends up not optimized for 16:9 because now you need to calculate something far from the screen that is not being used only to satisfy 21:9 owners. Even for FPS or something first person, different FOV can alter the gameplay. If you make a 1st person horror game, it definitely would feel different playing at a narrow FOV vs wider. If it is an FPS, having wider FOV can be really big advantage, thus altering the gameplay (well, not exactly the gameplay but how you play the game). As for what can be improved next, definitely physics simulation, especially collision detection. Most games only use collision for primary object and probably something looser for the secondary, tertiary, and so on. How many times you see objects on the character clip something, like some parts of the armor, weapon, clothes, etc. This is not a solved problem because it is very hard and expensive to do it right. Better fluid simulation is also nice, but currently I don't see a specific need to make it better unless you design a game around interacting with fluids (fluid is not just water but anything that flows like smoke). Having said that, instead of thinking about what is next, I prefer devs to just make a good game instead of trying to think too much about these things. Personally I'm tired hearing fans fighting about graphics (PS5 run this better, SeriesX run this better, wait, PC Master race is the best, etc). The most annoying thing from last gen is loading time, not graphics, and I'm glad they solved it this time. Nothing is more annoying than waiting for a game to load, especially when moving to another location/level.
@EDcaseNO3 жыл бұрын
Largely yes, especially the competitive-multiplayer-aspect-view-stuff. As for co-operative or single player content, eh, if they are a larger developer then it should be considered [even if just for gameplay segments] a fair number of common issues are fixed with better design practises which help scale the content to future possibilities. Your comment on performance isn't really relevant in the pc segment where this question presides, two reasons; User is likely an enthusiast with GPU hardware to handle the niche resolution if not, that's their fault. And code should take into account the possible play space, (example GTA-like) you wouldn't calculate the whole city's worth of npc's spawn, position, action... and equally you better do that to nearby people before they hit potential player vision, or else just a simple 360 spin of the camera and you'd randomise the characters nearby. Of course each game is different but for the most part hopefully we are striding towards a future where more is simulated rather than the latter example, it's always a matter of working within constraints but hopefully we end up resolution agnostic. Collision and clipping is real hard, would be great to see improved. My wish would be a big emphasis on invisible systems and their interactions, so like enemy routines and making them more reactive with the world and player. MGS2 still feels so much more alive and real than most worlds even to this day, it's a hard balance between difficulty and fun in this space but with so much headroom now on the CPU side of the consoles... oh or if there is some AI voice generation to be used, the tech exists, when a middleware exists which can make good text to speech voice synthesis happen in the console space, would drastically change game burdens. More dialogue, variance, delivery based on in game 'mood' factors, all while using less space, hell it even opens up a world of re-releases for non-spoken classics. ramble over =]

@@EDcaseNO You might think it doesn't affect single player game, but it absolutely does. Imagine top down game or isometric game where someone playing in widescreen able to see further, that will absolutely change how they make the game if you want to make the game feel the same for everyone. Same as for first person horror game, etc. For simple FOV adjustment, yes, it probably wouldn't matter much for single player game, but still you can't brush off the implication on designing game for 16:9 screen and expect it to work well without any gameplay implication on 21:9 screen. As for technical aspect, yes, PC can brute force it but if for example you want to make 1 size fits all, that means someone that is playing on 16:9 will have some aspect of it that needs to be calculated like it is on 21:9 screen (like the physics/interaction), thus you're basically asking people playing on 16:9 to sacrifice their performance so the game can be played optimally on 21:9 screen. Personally I would hate devs for doing it since I'm not using a powerful PC, thus I don't want them to waste CPU/GPU power for it. Doing anything offscreen too far away is generally not a good practice unless it is absolutely needed. Some games can work with just expanding the view, but actually for a lot of games, it just doesn't work without actually sacrificing one aspect ratio for another (one aspect ratio will have the advantage). You just need to put yourself in a game designer perspective for various type of games and try to make games that works for both aspect ratio in a balanced manner. Even for something you think that is simple like Diablo 2, imagine you as a developer need to adapt it to 21:9 screen. Where the enemy spawn? if you adapt it to this very wide screen, then do you also need to expand the calculation in a square manner? so not only expanding left to right but top to bottom? If you think you need to do that, then there will be a lot more of offscreen calculation needed simply because of 21:9. How about gameplay implication coming from the fact that you can see the enemy from much further? Are you confident that it won't break the game? This is not simply a HUD/UI matter, it is a gameplay/game design matter. I'm not saying you can't do it, but it is not easy. It is like asking someone to paint in a portrait canvas then after finishing it, as him to make it into landscape. If you are an artist, you'll be annoyed by it because you already carefully frame the painting to work in portrait and would do it differently if they asked for portrait in the first place.
