I will never forget when I was in 4th grade in early 1997. My bus driver was so hyped for Turok, and he loved it. I asked him if he was going to grab Doom 64 as well, but he said no as he didn't want his children shooting humans. At the time I didn't realize it, but look back now I chuckle. Doom 64 has no humans while Turok does.

You forgot to mention that Turok was also the first FPS to move the gun to the lower right of the screen (while the actual reticule in the middle). One thing to note re: Quake (see 17:00) is that its animation wasn't made with a skeletal system... well, I'm sure it was ANIMATED with one in the 3D creation software they used at the time, but in the engine, it was stored and played back as a series of deformations on the entire model. I forgot the actual term for it. But since the game was originally designed to run on a software renderer, it allowed them to not worry about the cost of skinning vertices to bones and calculating the resulting positions, which was huge back then... just store the state of vertices of every frame of animation instead. But that comes with very interesting and funky looking artifacts if you interpolate the existing frames (like source ports do) since each vert will just linearly warp to its next frame :)
@MaxLebled5 жыл бұрын
@Kay in a vague sense, you could think of the animation system back then as being made entirely out of blendshapes, yeah. (though blendshapes are additive by nature. Vert animation in quake wasn't)

Turok style controls where an absolute must back then. In Goldeneye/Perfect Dark this was the 1.2 style control scheme. Frankly, they're ALMOST modern and work great. I had to unlearn and relearn a couple habits as console FPSes evolved though. For one, I was so used to games like Descent and Star Fox that it took me some time to unlearn "flight stick" style up/down reversal. I actively practiced it over and over until I got used to non-pilot controls. Secondly, for the longest time I played Halo with "southpaw" controls. I give credit to Bungie for realizing that a lot of gamers were coming off Turok controls where you aimed with the left stick and granted a scheme just for that. Once again, in time I eventually bit the bullet and trained myself to reverse things and move with left while aiming with right. Keep in mind this whole time, I had almost given up on PC FPSes because I frankly sucked at them. I was using pure keyboard controls mind you, and hadn't quite learned the wonders of WASD + Mouse. So, I gained my skills on controllers. Imagine my utter shock when I finally decided to embrace PC shooters again and found that I was aiming shockingly well. I felt like I'd been wearing weighted clothing for years, in secret training.

I am a natural lefty (my teacher in elementary school made me learn to write with my left) and the control scheme was just super natural to me. Even to this day I play all FPS games southpaw when I use a controller. This game was soooo far ahead of its time. When I finally was able to get my copy of Goldeneye, it was kind of a let down playing with standard controls. I did however find out how to change them about an hour after playing it. I was one of those that used two controllers to play. Turok is one of my all time favorite games and I am thinking about going back to play it and get every secret.

The fall scream *(Buue-uuah-OOAAHHHHAHHAHHH!!!)* & *"I. AM TUROK"* is the first thing that came to my mind whenever I see or hear the word "Turok".

I originally played Turok on a PC via a 3DFX card...this was a truly special time for the evolution of gaming.

Fun fact: the team that made the classic Turok games went on to create the Metroid Prime games

Love learning about games that i never knew existed. I was mostly playing Quake,Doom, Half Life and Delta Force 1. Shame i missed out on this gem, it seems like a perfect game to play back in 99. (99 cuz thats when i started gaming on my own PC)

Turok is a masterpiece of its time. Wish I had played it back in the 90s. It would've blown my little mind! Because my parents were strict about games with blood in them, and the lack of friends who had the game, I never got the chance to play it. Of course, later on in life, I played it on an emulator. Wasn't disappointed at all. :D

I played Turok for the first time this year! I even made a video. Definitely a fun title that I would've played countless hours of back in the day.

Great video! I've reminisced about how revolutionary this was at the time and no one else ever seemed to think so. Turok was a monster of a game and had some crazy boss battles

This game is why I still use "southpaw" console controls to this day, despite being a righty.

Digital Foundry is one of two channels on KZbin that gets a like before I even watch the video. The other being Cinemassacre. Great video as always John.
