An outstanding piece of kit. I have only used it once and can already tell it is a huge improvement from my homemade charcoal forge. I will be looking forward to making damascus in the summer with this.

Got one of these and am quite happy with it, have made some box jaw tongs in it and some bolt jaw tongs, I contacted them to find out how to get more heat in there, and they told me to block off one end with fire bricks and then you can reach welding temperatures. Hope that helps some people.

So here is the direct quote from their ebay listing for this forge. "We guarantee that You will reach welding temperature - this forge can reach 2642 Fahrenheit." Ordering one the 20th, will post comments after I give it a try...

what is the white fluffy stuff? I was told that if I inhale any of this it will damage my lungs and never leave? I have two of these forges so I need to know before I fire them up are they a problem?

Hi there, I believe the white fluffy stuff is ceramic blanket - which is like a wool made of ceramic fibres. It's the most effective insulation you can get for forges. There is definitely some concerns for breathing it in. But this really is only an issue if you're cutting and fitting it yourself (such as if it gets damaged and needs replacing). It won't burn, but can be damaged by flux if you are doing any forge welding. Flux is the powder (such as borax) that you put in between the two pieces you're trying to forge in order to make a stronger forge weld. At hot temperatures the flux will melt and damage any ceramic fibres you might have. The best way to get around this is to flux after you've brought your steel out of the forge, hit it, and then put it back in. This way you shouldn't have a lot of flux sitting around in the forge. But, like anything else, it doesn't always work perfectly. I wouldn't be concerned about the ceramic blanket for your lungs unless you're actively cutting and coming into constant contact with it. In which case, use a good, carbon filtered mask. Though, it never hurts to seal the fibers with ITC100 to help any fibres from going airborne.

Thank you so much. Your comment is so informative I'm going to get the itc100. But thank you again.

It's ceramic wool, it's like asbestos but not as bad, although you can still get lung cancer from it relatively easily. You really want to fixate that stuff somehow.

Seagull ITC100 is a cement like coating that covers the ceramic wool. It traps the escaping fibers from going out into the air, which causes irritations and lung damage.

Judging by the color of that steel it will forge weld no problem.
