Nothing more difficult to move than a dead horse. Especially when that horse is a dead tank in the winter time! Phil did a nice job on the loader repair! Fun video Rich! 👍😁

I work for a power company, some guy left his dump body up in the middle of winter, -10f, broke two utility poles when he hit the wires. Our digger couldn’t pull the frozen pole outta the ground and we asked the town employee running a loader like this one to pull the pole outta the ground. Chained the pole to the hook on the bucket, tensioned it, he then curled the bucket up and the hook welded to the loader bucket bent 180* open like a sardine can. 😬😬😬 it was a big hook too. We had to drill multiple holes with the auger around the pole to get it out, there was 5’ of frost in the ground. 12 hours later we had everything fixed, It was awesome.

@@MB_PRODUCTIONS it’s a good instinct to have. To add to the story this happened TWICE in one week, with the same two poles, both by dump trucks leaving their body’s up. Back story, they were hauling snow being removed from town, but we’re leaving the dump site with the body up, driving 1/4 mile with it up before they hit the pole. Both times at 10pm when it was -10f, both times took 12 hours to fix. They don’t dump snow there anymore

At a job I had quite some time ago up north a forklift got stuck in the snow, and a coworker brought out a bobcat to tow it out, he hooked the chain to the forklift hitch pin, and to the top of the skidsteer bucket, I voiced concerns about the chain coming off and hitting me in the back of the head while I drove the forklift and he pulled with the skidsteer. He shot that down, said stop being a wimp, so I got on the forklift, ducked down so I was behind the propane tank (Smart I know) and he pulled, the wheeled skidsteer wouldn't pull it, so he went to jerk the chain, it broke the hitch pin on the forklift and slingshotted the chain straight into the cab of the skidsteer, hit him square in the chest. broke 3 ribs, he was out for a month, miracle it didn't stop his heart or something. Be careful with chains, winch lines, anything where there is a lot of force, there is a lot of potential energy to be released, and you do NOT wanna be in the way of that.

Dangerous yes, if the chain breaks, but doesn't attaching it higher up on the loader give it some extra advantage? As in, the weight of the thing being pulled also pulls the loader down towards the ground, giving it some extra traction?

I did timing gears in a C13 cat in a truck. The air compressor threw a rod and locked up the gear, breaking what ever gear was driving it and sending metal through the entire gear train. It never lost time and we drove it onto the trailer. It needed new rods and main bearings as well because it pumped metal with the engine oil. The crank was undamaged as was the cam it only needed a new gear.

Then while backing up, you roll the bucket back. While keeping the edge of the bucket in the ground for traction. Seeing how the tires didn't have any traction. Then repeat the process until you've gotten to where you need to go.

Those old machines were pretty durable and reliable machines. I use to operate them back in the early eighties they were quite the work horses. I moved a lot of pay dirt for a concrete company for at least three years then got out of driving heavy equipment and then pursued the trade as a Welder fitter. I hated sitting in a cab all day long, operating heavy equipment my days felt like they lasted forever. I was so bored operating heavy equipment. I couldn't do it any more. That's why I got into the fabrication trade my days went much faster enjoying something I loved.
