At the same time I get to see every top player around the world throw accurate bombs past me. The kindness from players is a cherry on top!

@@teemuojaniitty9864 It very much depend on the event. I think the European events are looked at differently than events here in the US, they seem more professional over there. Maybe because disc golf started here in the states spotters are just expected, or maybe the professionals at DGPT events here in the states just think spotters should be thankful that they are on the same course as them. When Brent started using spotters at the 1991 Columbus Open (BHMO now) it was a new idea. We thought what do we need spotters for?
@ryanf45022 ай бұрын
My gut reaction when I saw this happen was 'oh come on, you know it's coming at you and you know how backhand rollers shape up, AND it was clearly gonna end up safe in bounds.' Then I stopped to think about the fact that the spotter is trying to look at the OB line, as the disc had previously crossed OB and was still not back in bounds. I also felt like, "how many shots do I watch COMING AT ME vs. away from me? How hard would that actually have been to judge it from HIS perspective?" Have you ever had a groundball come at you in the infield and suddenly it jumps up and hits ya in the chest? Yea... It's easy to judge watching a video but I don't think this is anyone's "fault." People still get hit by balls at PGA golf events. It doesn't mean drastic change is required. It's just unfortunate that this stuff does happen sometimes.

Hey Paul, thank you for agreeing to talk with Scott and even appear in a video on this issue. I know you'd love to put it behind you, and I agree, we all should leave this in the rear view mirror. I really do understand you meant no harm, and I think most people feel the same. I don't think anyone believes you meant to stop the disc, only that you made the wrong decision and got hit because of it. But I really do appreciate that you regret the decision and that in the end, you wouldn't make it again. I don't question your character, but I was upset (as a fan) that you made the choice you did, like many others. You should put this behind you. The rest of us will. Just keep trying to do better, and you can make this a positive outcome for others, as well as for yourself. You can tell people about that crazy story you made that one mistake, and give them guidance on how to prevent them from making one like that themselves. You can turn this into a positive experience. In the end it should be. And thank you Scott for letting Paul come on and show his humanity. If he was mean and indignant, that would be one thing. But he's regretful and apologetic, and I think will grow from this experience. 🙂

This video is incredible Scott! It is so ridiculous to see some in our community going after a member who went out of his way to VOLUNTEER at an event, to assume that Paul would have any malicious intent is crazy to me, especially hearing what he said about standing behind a tree the next day. There's so many factors that led to Garrett's disc hitting Paul - the hole, the OB lines, the golfer's line choice, inconsistent tee-off timings, and not to Paul's fault but lack of training for volunteers. Perhaps a list of criteria could be given to these volunteer spotters, things such as standing behind trees, popular lines on the holes they're spotting, optimal areas to stand, or just an overall briefing? The people jumping to immediately scapegoat Paul's split-second decision would never put themselves out there the way Paul has, I and many others are thankful for his contribution to the disc golf community, I hope we are louder than the haters. edit: gramar

Character assassination IS uncalled for and I completely disagree that his error was a split second decision. His error was allowing a 5-10 second decision to turn into a split second decision. I volunteer spotted last month. Paul waited far too long to react. GG released the disc nearly 10 sec before the hit, it took a huge hop 6 sec before the hit, took a second huge hop 3 sec before the hit, and crossed the OB line 2 sec before the hit. Reacting incorrectly to the final hop wasn’t the error; the error was failing to react to the release and the first two hops. Beyond spotter responsibility though, there is also room for the PDGA to either amend the rules regarding interference and/or for the dg community to more deeply register the fact that there is inherent risk any time we throw our disc OB and there are ultimately no guarantees our disc will eventually come to rest in bounds.

Thanks for the leadership, Scott. When I see people getting upset it’s mostly about disrespecting the game, or at least a perception of disrespecting the game. Clearly this was an accident, and preventable, and the anger is from a perception of us trying to be cute which impacts someone else’s livelihood. Couldn’t agree more, let’s stop overreacting, and start learning and growing and maturing. So while we command and demand respect for the game and competition, let’s not forget that our fellow friends, fans, and family are also worthy of respect. Thank you for volunteering, sir.

He would have been the Hero ,if the disc didn't jump up and hit him. Looked like he lifted his leg but wasn't high enough. Sorry people thought you did it on purpose. Thanks for volunteering.

great idea and follow through Scott. This changed my mind on the incident. I'm not a keyboard warrior, but I saw it happen and it looked like he had time to get out of the way. You changed my perspective. And you reminded me once again to buy your book.

Thank you, Scott. I think anyone who ever criticises a volunteer is a first-rate a-hole. And, the 20/20 Retrospectoscope is an abysmal tool to apply to any situation. To Paul, thank you so much for your love of disc golf, and your dedication to volunteering in our sport. It is much appreciated. It sometimes slightly frustrates me that every few years there's always another new batch of people who arrive in disc golf, and who assume that disc golf was somehow "left behind" in the Great Professionalization Of Sport In The USA. They think the rules are rinky-dink, and that disc golf desperately needs fully paid whistle-blowing referees in order to become "Truly Professional". What a load of rubbish that is. It is the self-refereed aspect of disc golf which is a feature of our sport, and *not* a bug. It is what distinguishes disc golf from other sports, in fact. The PDGA has had many opportunities to adopt draconian rules and requirements for top flight events, and it has not gone down that path. Thankfully! Because the PDGA (despite being far from perfect!) do have a full understanding of what disc golf is, and the PDGA board have (over several decades!) shown remarkably consistent good governance in not adopting silly rules or requirements for our sport. Long may that continue!

I never saw it as intentional or bad decisions....it was fate. Sht happens in disc golf. I do believe the disc would have come back in....but it hit a root or something....pretty sure if that didn't happen he would have pulled it off. Hope you still will spot.... Sorry thus happened to you.

Good morning Paul and Scott, I never even thought about Paul having to spot where the disc went out of bounds, that brings a whole new angle to the situation, and maybe before tournaments TD’s should talk to and coach some of the spotters regarding situations like this for Prevention. Scott, you’re awesome for making this video, and Paul you’re awesome for explaining the situation, thanks for your volunteering, Paul! We love you buddy!

I don't know Paul from Adam, but what I will say is that there are way too many "controversies" around tournament organization, course upkeep, and player treatment. Coming off the back of the European leg of the tour, where players were given the king's treatment, I think this is yet another straw on the back of a mounting question about how tournaments should be run and what courses are tournament ready. NOBODY is talking about the spectator who was sitting in the gazebo for player tee shots that can cut through the gazebo, or how the tee shot on some holes change depending on how many cars are parked along the fairway, or the fact that one of the holes makes you throw over a damn baseball field. Paul blew it, but there is a bigger conversation here.
