"Hey Mate, I've got a wave for ya. It's in Brisbane, Australia"
That's how this adventure began when I received that message along with a video from Fraser Spratt via social media. (As you will see in the edit) Fraser's video was of a fun looking wave that breaks off of a passenger ferry that leaves from a town called Cleveland on the outskirts of Brisbane, Australia and takes people to North Stradbrook island. As I made plans with Fraser to go surf this wave, I had heard about Bede Durbidge (pro surfer) surfing it 20 years prior... which gave me SOME confidence after the first person I talked to about the wave near the ferry dock told me there was sharks EVERYWHERE, no biggie. THIS is the video I made of the whole experience :) Hope you like it!
Also, if any one has anymore ideas of spots to check out HIT ME UP. I love this stuff, this could be the beginning of a new series called "I've got a wave for ya" ??? I leave the decision in your hands...
Let me know what you think of the video in comments below.

I have waited for I feel like a lifetime to see someone surf that wave. I watch and surf it in my head every time I go over on the ferry. So stoked you got to surf it Dylan!!!! I have seen the right-hander barrel at about thigh height in the most glassy conditions. That would be ultimate to surf. Big fan of the weird waves series. Keep em coming please.

One of the best videos of the year !!! Dylan this entire precinct is a marquee RAMSAR site for the critically endangered Eastern Curlew, other migratory species and local endemic marine life which is now threatened by a apocalyptic development which will create 1.85 million cubic metres of dredging spoil and raze 42 hectares of pristine Mangroves! Not one mangrove should fall for this invasive and environmentally disastrous proposal. Please return and help save this habitat at Toondah Harbour which if this concept is approved will destroy sea grass meadows, spawning grounds and inshore coral reefs including Sandy and Cassim Islands! Your video will hopefully highlight what we will lose irrevocably!!

@@DylanGravesYT Haha Field of Dreams definitely touched upon some universal truths I reckon. Yah Sunshine Coast is beautiful, and has always been a favourite place of mine. I am originally from Adelaide, and one Xmas my parents took us on a holiday in 1977 when I was 6, and we ended up in Noosa (long drive). They loved it so much they bought a holiday house there, and we went back every xmas for my whole childhood and teen years. Then as an adult I have repeatedly gone back and visited. And now it is kinda surreal, definitely a field of dreams moment, that I am going to be working on Peregian Beach and living on that long treasured part of Australia that I have spent my whole life being in love with. Pretty cool on a karmic kinda level if I sit back and think about it.

I use to work that ferry. Don’t wary about the sharks the ferry ran over them all. Easter weekend or the first week of the holiday (you want a good load) drop the deckhand-skipper a 6pack and you might get lucky and he will give the boat the berrys. That channel is so shallow that the boats brake propellers really regularly!! And yes Quondamoka is the best boat to surf. I hoped you took a4x4 surfed the beachs on strady?

A mate of mine used to ride that wave on a surf ski 25-30 years ago. I wasn't that keen...it's a long way to paddle if you fall off the back of the wave. However, we used to ride the small ferries in the Brisbane River when they were going against the tide. Second or third wave back, as close as possible. Some of the big dredges put off a nice wave. Once again, lots of sharks. But they don't bother you if you don't bother them. We had a 5 to 6 m shark (as long as the ski) swim under us for a look and just kept going... kinda scary. Love the enthusiasm.

@@DylanGravesYT The leeward side is a dugong habitat, the surf side is a humpback whale migration path. Neither side is shark-free, but one side is a relatively calm bay where lots of people can help you quickly, and the other side is an isolated and notoriously dangerous stretch of great white habitat in high open ocean swells. Comparing the two seems unfair. Both will kill you on a bad day, it's just that one can kill you on a good day too.

Brisbane river mouth also holds a secret spot. I worked on a dredge in the river for years and saw this wave first hand. Bigger and more powerful than the Cleveland ferry wave. It’s a weird wave as it breaks close to shore but it runs straight. You need a boat to access the wave and to be picked up. Again Right conditions count. The right incoming ship, Tide height and wind are a big factor.

@barrydavid8794

@@DylanGravesYT the best time is the afternoon with a strong south easterly wind (about 30knots or more). The spot isn’t really affected by the wind because it is protected by the sea wall. Also if you google the Brisbane River shipping schedule and find an incoming oil/gas tanker or a ship transporting vehicles. Also a 3/4 to 1/2 run out tide is best because the ships are fully loaded and are at full steam to fight the wind and tide, putting up a huge wake.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/pImkhZulhbNkqMU on this video in river wave boat / this wave is twice the size of this video between 7:00 am until 9:00 am at low tide / because the boat goes faster to transport more people at peak time / and around 4:30 pm until 6:30 pm at low tide is the same / without wind and the full moon is the best / because the tide is more lowest

@@DylanGravesYT hello Dylan / i saw your video before / but you were at the wrong time to catch the good waves on the river / the waves i saw of you had no potential / go there again at the right time of the moon / at the right time of the tide / and at the right time for the boat to pass by / and you'll flip your head / good size and long waves / you have to sleep in the car at place and wake up early to understand / no crowd

So many people have surfed the novelty waves we see throughout KZbin channels…. but the person who makes the KZbin videos is who gets the attention for “achieving it”.
