DH 100 Vampire MK 6 - Balancing EDF
In this video, I show how to balance the EDF fan on my new DH 100 Vampire MK 6. It was very badly out of balance and causing all sorts of racket. This vibration would have certainly caused issues with the stabilizer as well, if not worse, blowing up the whole fan unit!

Sorry to cause any confusion. You are absolutely correct to have the flaps inboard of the tail booms. The airbrakes, which operated as you describe, were outboard. Kenneth m

I see...confusion has now been averted. Hope you enjoy the flights either way :)

In building this model I experienced the same problem you had initially with poor ground handling. I found that the toe-out of the wheels caused the wheels to move outwards such than the tires dragged on the gear legs, resulting in a very squirrelly taxy. This was easily cured by installing a short spacer (cut from aluminum tubing) between the wheel and the gear leg. The toe-out is not in itself a handicap and many full scale aircraft are setup that way. As an aside, the Mk 5FB Vampire had excellent engine out performance, with a glide ratio of 11:1 (80 miles from 40,000') It was necessary to raise the gear quickly upon take-off, because a venturi effect between fuselage and gear could impair retraction as speed built up. Compressibility (sound barrier) was encountered at about Mach 0.78, which was self-limiting in that the nose would pitch up -- unlike the P-51 which would tuck under. I have experienced both. The Vampire was easy to fly, and the only concern was with the slow spool-up of the engine in response to the throttle. This required any increase in power upon approach be made by 300', for by then your trajectory was fixed! You have created some really neat modifications to the model, and your flying ability is inspiring! Kenneth M

That is very cool information! Thanks for watching!!! So the Vampire was sub-sonic?

Thanks, Brian, for your valuable videos. But as an old Vampire pilot, I must correct a serious error in your flap modification. There were no flaps between the fuselage and the tail booms. Those areas were occupied by large and very effective speed brakes, which pivoted around their mid chord to extend above and below the wing. Deployment of the brakes allowed an extremely steep and fast descent at 15,000’ per minute, directly over the control tower, from 25,000’ into the landing pattern. This conserved fuel which was always in short supply (300 gallons per hour).YoursKenneth Melvin, RNZAF (ret)

I'm honored to have you watching my video! When I was doing my research for this build, I found some pictures that led me to believe these these further outboard flaps might also act as air breaks, but if I'm understanding what you're saying, they ONLY pivot in the midsections, thus pointing up and down simultaneously, creating loads of drag...this leaves the inboard split flaps to deploy as usual (and as I did). Still, they worked EXCELLENT, even with the non-scale operation. Thanks for sharing, and being a part of my channel!

To be clear, the flaps were outboard of the tail booms. The air brakes inboard. Interestingly, lowering flaps caused nose-up pitch, unlike most other aircraft, which pitch down. Kenneth Melvin

Nature gifted you with a bunch or tons of patience ;) but it was worth it, better sound and for sure a longer life for the motor in the long run.

I am definatelly not a patient person....but I have extremely high tollerance for machines - I work on industrial scales, and when most people would just be putting away their rocket launchers, I'm usually just buttoning up the device in good working order...

What is the best way to run the wires for the wingtip lights?
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 6 жыл бұрын
It depends on the wing construction, but here, I believe I cover that in the LED mod video series (starting at part 1)... Part 1 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKq5mXuje5KlY9U Part 2 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqPQc2CAjpxko7M Part 3 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqWTl5qur7esgc0 Part 4 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGTIf2qErbiXb5I Part 5 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGrZaol-nJpof7M Part 6 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYHFiZiuZb16j5o I will either cut them into the surface, or drill down the length, with the later being much harder, but cleaner results. This plane was a fun project, so I don't want you to miss out on any of it. I have to assume you've already seen the whole playlist, but if NOT, here it is... kzbin.info/aero/PLXTH0DstRDc4Um1O8QZpaBQJcxDZfiALv ....enjoy! Thanks for watching through the series! Having a full scale Vampire pilot with our channel is really cool!!!

@@BrianPhillipsRC Mine is a lemon, edf fan blew up, sucked one of the aileron wires, and one has to be careful, the edf is like a vacuum, pulls the wires out of the rx. Broke front landing gear, I said enough, is a belly lander now, much lighter w a new fan. It is what it is, but seriously, but for EDFs, I will stay w MotionRC.
