I spent many years on the New Age path. What do I have to show for it? A lot of doubt that any of it is true, a lot of books on the shelf, a lot of money spent, and not much else. I feel it kept me off the search for God, not brought me nearer. It was a distraction. And, so many new age folks I know seem to be more "collectors" than "spiritual". They are always going over the next thing to get the feeling that the last thing didn't give them. The moment I moved out of new age circles - and also dumping western gurus who don't talk about God and/or Sanatana Dharma - I started having my spirituality deepen.

In these transcendental names You have invested all Your transcendental energies. There are not even hard and fast rules for chanting these names. O my Lord, out of kindness You enable us to easily approach You by Your holy names, but I am so unfortunate that I have no attraction for them. (2 तृणादऽपि सुनीचेन तरोरऽपि सहिष्णुना अमानिना मानदेन कीर्तनीयः सदा हरिः ॥३॥ tṛṇād api sunīcena taror api sahiṣṇunā amāninā mānadena kīrtanīyaḥ sadā hariḥ ॥3॥ One should chant the holy name of the Lord in a humble state of mind, thinking oneself lower than the straw in the street; one should be more tolerant than a tree, devoid of all sense of false prestige, and should be ready to offer all respect to others. In such a state of mind one can chant the holy name of the Lord constantly. (3) न धनं न जनं न सुन्दरीं कवितां वा जगदीश कामये मम जन्मनि जन्मनीश्वरे भवताद् भक्तिर् अहैतुकी त्वयि ॥४॥ na dhanaṁ na janaṁ na sundarīṁ kavitāṁ vā jagad-īśa kāmaye mama janmani janmanīśvare bhavatād bhaktir ahaitukī tvayi ॥4॥ O almighty Lord, I have no desire to accumulate wealth, nor do I desire beautiful women, nor do I want any number of followers. I only want Your causeless devotional service, birth after birth. Bright thinking and talk that aligns with my head. It has been a while since I realized that the *fundamental* flaw with the *Neo Hinduism* today (reduced to the tokenisms of conveniently altered and selectively, dumbly followed rituals and chants) is that it does not possess a well defined set of *rights & wrongs* and therefore *do's & don'ts* in life. To me, a religion that accepts *all* possibilities is as good as *no religion* , which is the *new age* . I am convinced that the root cause of miseries in human relationships arise from a lack of agreement on the *rights & wrongs* and enforcement of the same by *preferably* the State itself. The Civil laws of democratic, secular govts can be *no good* , since trying to cater to different philosophies especially conflicting ones *cannot* lead to a cohesive set of rules. Indian Hindus have lost it mostly over the years... I have to hold myself also guilty of that and want to know that set of laws in the religion (it need not be concrete, but rules that could be translated without difficulty to life situations even in changing times by lay people), but apparently there has been no single document on that.

The original teachings of Hermes Trismegistus are very much in keeping with Sanatana Dharma, and thus Truth. Many of the more modern (i.e., the last several hundred years) interpretations of these teachings, however, are mixed with some inaccurate speculation, Abrahamist misinterpretations, New Age corruption, and occult depravities. For this reason, it is best to read the actual source texts themselves, the Corpus Hermeticum, rather than the later interpretations of these texts. Always go back to the source texts (scriptures) in any attempt to understand a traditional spiritual path.

The high prices of spiritual services these days are a consequence of capitalism and it commodifying everything. For some people it is also a major source of income. Of course, throughout most of human history the services of spiritual guru's and monks etc. were paid with charity, and spiritual authorities had a bigger place in society. Modern society has changed that moral fibre and reduced the spiritual component drastically. People will ask ''what will spiritual practice give me immediately? How much of x/y/z will I get?'' (seen people ask this in some meditation groups!).

The biggest error of the new age is its syncretism. One must follow a living Tradition to truly reach spiritual understanding. Guenon had a very harsh critique of theosophy.

Yes, the New Age people just want to pick and choose what gives them warm fuzzies from a number of different traditions and leave out anything challenging. They never want to adopt a whole system because they don't actually want to do any serious work.

Namaste Alisa SHAKTI. Sri Acharyaji has no position on the use of Tarot cards, per se. The use of such cards certainly predates the modern New Age movement. But, like Yoga, meditation and so many other older elements of spiritual practice, all older practices can be exploited and abused by New Age charlatans. So, it is always crucial to use caution in where you derive information about any such practices. The most direct means of spiritual enlightenment is, of course, Yoga spirituality and authentic meditation.

The tarot deck comes from the ghibellines in the middle ages. (German and italian faction loyal to the emperor of the holy Roman empire) it has lots of important symbolism that should be understood. Modern ideas of tarot are tarnished by the new age. Julius evola has some good insights in the tarot if you would like to study.

I was wondering what your take on Zoroastrianism was...i originally thought it was a not particularly "dharmic" religion, however after reading some of the Avesta and study its teachings and doctrines in deep i had to change my mind on the matter.

Thank you for your kind comments and question. There are two distinct historic phases of the pre-Islamic Persian religion: a) what could be called Avestan and b) Zoroastrian. The former (Avestan) was non-different from Vedic spirituality, and has Vedic spirituality as its antecedent foundation. Zoroastrianism, on the other hand, was an attempted "reform" of this pure Avestan religion at the hands of the prophet Zarathustra, which consequently led to a watering down and slight distortion of the original Avestan religion. Thus, while the more recent (i.e., the last several thousand years) Zoroastrian version of the original Avestan religion is still placed within the camp of Dharma, the more pure expression of ancient Iranian religion is to be found in the pre-Zarathustra from of the religion, which itself was ultimately a derivative of the pure Vedic religion. For this reason, the purest expression of Dharma is still to be found in the scriptures and authentic teachings (as opposed to the more recent distortions) of Sanatana Dharma.
