DHC 2 Beaver takeoff crash at Vancouver's Coal Harbour | Harbour Air seaplane

A dramatic incident unfolded in Vancouver's Coal Harbor when a float-equipped DHC-2 Beaver Mk I collided with a pleasure boat during takeoff from the Coal Harbor Sea Plane Base (CXH/CYHC). The floatplane, engaged in a sightseeing tour, had six occupants on board.
As the plane commenced its takeoff, it collided with a nearby pleasure boat carrying four individuals. Despite the severity of the collision, all six occupants of the floatplane escaped without injury. However, the collision resulted in serious injuries to two of the boat's occupants, who required immediate medical attention.
Following the collision, the floatplane sank into the harbor. Emergency response teams quickly arrived at the scene to assist the injured and begin an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities will be examining factors such as visibility conditions, communication between the plane and boat, and adherence to safety protocols to determine the cause and prevent future occurrences.

Oof. Oddly enough it was exactly ten years ago yesterday when I treated myself to one of those DeHavilland Beaver Harbour Air tours of Vancouver for my birthday. During takeoff I remember thinking “how the hell can anyone see what’s in front of us at this strange angle”?

Well the boat was in a space that's used for these floatplanes. So I would hate to be that boat owner. His insurance is gonna skyrocket

Not really. You have little to no forward visibility as the nose comes up.

@@tmaster3332 exactly , I thought about this and was like surely he heard something . I know wind plays a factor in sound travel, so boat being upwind maaaybe reduced/delay regarding sound....but yeah, he literally did the equivalent of taking a sunday stroll across a highway
