Just look at that magnificent STOL aircraft. A stalwart since the late 50's, this aircraft is the gift that keeps on giving. No other aircraft to this day can hold a candle to the Caribou's unsurpassed consistency and reliability. A truly underated and often overlooked work-horse of the sky. Designed by the Candians for the USaF. Great things come from 'small' counties. Viva la 'Bou!

Can't say that anyone has manufactured a better all-rounder than the consistently reliable Caribou to this day. They save our lives. A late 1950's aircraft, this old stalwart still holds it's own in this present day and age. Viva la 'Bou!

Oecussi in 2000? Steep hills and Jordainians doing security. I was part of the ground crew maintaining this aircraft A4 195 at Comoro airfield in Dilli. I did the run down to Oecussi a few times ramp riding, it was nice to get out of the heat. Quokka57 the "roo" is a wallaby the squadron emblem of 35 SQN based in Townsville QLD.

@VonSutho Nup, Occussi east Timor 2000. I was part of the ground crew maintaining this aircraft in Dilli at the time. It used to do the Occussi run a couple of times a week supporting the UN. She 's a 38 sqn bird here. Currently sitting in a paddock behind the army aviation museum in Oakey QLD.

The Air Force traded some helicopters, draft choices, and a player to be named later for the Army Caribous. Flew them until 1972. Great stol airplane as long as you didn't want to go fast or high altitude.

Im not sure of the year that Caribou was built but I know that it was built in Downsview Ontairo Canada by De Haviland manufacturing! They made some of the best turbo props in the world along wtih the Buffalo, Beaver, Twin Otter, Dash 7, and Dash 8 Great company that is now gone but some of the planes are going to possible be made by Vicking Air also in Canada.

Ya know what would be a sweet conversion for the Caribou, a pair of Pratt & Whitney R2800's. Maybe a pair CB-16's with fully reversible props as used on the DC-6's in Alaska.

@seaniam81 My mistake - sort of. Their head office is in Victoria but their manufacturing facility is in Calgary. But maybe thats only for the new DHC - 6 400s.

Great craft, pull the R 2000's out and stick it with some R 2800 C series Great STOL performance. The C119's were beter on torque with the R 4360's rather than the turbo compound Wright R 3350's. Still amazing the Boo as it has still not got a replacement. Still better on round engines. Less/Nil FOD than with coleman lanterns (turbines). Still a market and use for round engines. Perhaps engine torque when twisting a propeller.
