Great! What an interesting way to play! Thanks for all your recent uploads. I am sorry I have been too busy with life events and job duties recently to study them closely. I look forward to giving them all attention later on. Gibb

Yes, it is an interesting way to play. After partition things have changed in West Punjab. The true culture has been wiped out because of strong influence of media, religious and political reasosn. My mission is to document the true form or atleast most of it. They are Bhrais(sheikhs) dhol playing being their family occupation. He is singing popular Sammi song which women sing while performing sammi.

it is popular with everyone where Jhummar and Sammi are danced actually jhummar has picked up over the last few years by small video production companies to distribute and make money.Sammi is also being incorporated in jhummar and you will see a mix of jhummar and sammi in some videos on youtube.

Firstly is it popular with locals of The bar Areas such as districts like Hafizabad, Chiniot, jhang, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Okara, pakpattan and basically all regions of punjab beyond river Ravi. Sammi Songs are sung in Courtyards during weddings. It is popular with everyone but its not promoted through media because of constraints on showing women dance and rural society does not allow to video tape women. However Bhrais are allowed to play the dhol for women during Sammi as far as I kno

i meant to say it is popular with locals inhabitants of west punjab. however we need to understand demographics of the region and other factors to understand why punjabi culture in west punjab is limited to the courtyards and actually becoming extinct or evolving into a mix of pakistani cinematic and God knows what culture.

almost all punjabi folk songs are sung by women and have feminine side to it. except for boliyans that men used to sing during Vaisakhi melas which were very explicit and only a few old men know them. I cannot upload the boliyans that i have recorded. This is in response to your question as to why a man would be singing a song meant for sammi. if you refer to your work where you translate Jagat Ram Lalkas dholas they all are about a women describing her pain for her lover

The only problem is that young people are picking up on these dances In regions where Jhummar and sammi were performed.Regions where Bhangra was popular before partition is almost extinct. people do perfrom bhangra during weddings but not during any other seasonal festivities like Vaisakhi. The younger generation do not even know what bolis are and the Ghalar or Chuha were last seen maybe 50 years back during melas In West Punjab. Men were stopped from singing explicit bolis , thus it died out

This style of play also still exists in Firozpur district of East Punjab. My question would be why is he singing a sammi song that women sing/sung? I don't believe a man, and consequently no dhol, would be there during ladies' sammi. So was your understanding that he was just demonstrating the song for you, and putting a rhythm to it? Also, you call this "popular" -- popular with whom? Where?
