@Witch of salem I read it’s actually better to do the puzzle ring method at level 5 since greed drops 2 guaranteed legendaries and the only items in the pool at lvl 5 are Leorics Crown and the 3 Ethereal items. But I haven’t tried so I’m not sure yet

With the help of an primal ancient Puzzle Ring, Greed dropped four ethereal weapons for that class: one of each plus a spare. If only I had seven primal ancient Puzzle rings to start with-I would've been done in 15 minutes.

This unfortunately doesn't work on consoles. Unlike on PC, If a player on console that is hosting leaves the world, it will close that world and throw the other 2-4 players into a new one and selects one of those players as the new host. Basically, if the host leaves on console the current game instance ends

Tried this on console today, and couldn’t see what level I was on when I switching between characters. This was on Coop/split screen so that may have been the issue. Also, you should try killing the goblins that drop from Greed and then die to reset the agreed fight. Keep killing the goblins as they drop.

Prepare the lvl 16 chars before creating the level 12 char, because if not, people are in the menu with a new lvl 1 char that counts short as lvl 13-15, even when the level jumps from 12 to 16 and that would change the difficulty from 12 to 13-15 and these 3 others are pissed. (not 100% sure about that, can anyone confirm?) I could be wrong, but i just wanted to point that out that this could be a issue. excuse me for my poor english.

I did this a little differently with I believe better results. Might have been RNG, but I snapshotted level 7. When I ran the Vault I had more than a 50% drop rate for ethereals on greed. If I remember correctly It was a min of 2 drops on greed (max 3) and I got legendary items like 10 times out of a total eth drop of like maybe 20 or ... so maybe more. Lots of duplicates. I admit to a little superstition...it seemed like when I got over level 9 or so (as I was leveling up running the vault) my eth drop rate seemed to fall off. At level 10 or 11 I would get just legendaries on that run, so i would remake the toon to level 7 and do it again. I'm not sure why this worked, but it really worked well. My only issue was running out of puzzle rings, which i then farmed with a level 21 monk using kadala. It was pretty fast considering i was solo. Also, note that the ethereal will be level 7 or whatever. I'm not sure if you have a level 70 in the vault if the ethereals will drop at level 70. Didn't try that. By the way, Ethereals can also drop from Greed's dropped goblins. I tested this on like 40 goblins and only got one drop though, so it wasn't very productive for me. I was running on Normal by the way not T6. Thanks for the guide as always. You really covered this in the right detail.

There are solo methods that work well also. Use your main and complete season challenges until you can speed run T14 GRs and then use a gem of ease equipped weapon to level another seasonal character to level 31. That limits your ring pool to 3 for Kadala. (Puzzle Ring) Then start a character and use a cubed gem of ease weapon and level to 5. You need 3 character slots. Get blood shards with your main, farm those shards with your level 31 and then run the vault at T3 with your level 5. You should get 2 vault runs with each level 5 character. Your level 5 should be wearing illusory boots so you don't kill anything on the way to Greed so have that unlocked in your cube. This method took me about 14 hours of gameplay to get all 21 ethereals solo. The reason this works is because below level 12 the only legendaries Greed drops are Leorics Crown and ethereals so the drop rate is ridiculous at T3 because you get 2 guaranteed legendaries from Greed at T3.

I am puzzled, the very website showing the table loot used in this video says that at lvl 5 only Leoric Crown can drop. why get to lvl 12? At lvl 5, any legendary will have a 50% chance to be an etheral. - Get lvl 5 - Open Puzzle Ring on Torment VI - Kill Greed (don't kill trash mobs!) - Loot 1-2 etherals - Delete character and repeat

what im doing is farming blood shards, lvl a witch doctor to 31 because at 31 they only have like 3 leggy rings possible, spam buy puzzle rings, make a lvl 5 char and go kill greed on t6. make sure to not kill any mobs or anything inside vault except greed.

@Raxxanterax What worries me is this: Say we take DH as easiest class. On level 70 T16 he has 180 legendaries to drop +3 etereals. On snapshotted level 12 on T6 he has 13 legendaries +3 etereals. That means he has 11.4 times greater chance to get etereal on l12 T6. According to d3resource site, chance for a legendary drop in rift on T6 is 189%and on T16 is 1760% which is 9.3 times greater. Does that mean that the actual increase in % with snapshot method is 1.22 times?

There is missed opportunity for puzzle ring. Greed always drops at least 2 legendary items. When you do all the same for VI(12) farming, BUT, start with lvl1, do solo pass through Vault, then before greed you will be lvl 6-10 max. And on kill of greed you have only one alternative - Leoric crown. I've made about 15 vault runs, and I had 1 to 3 ethereals per run. Problem with Group - by the end of vault - you will be LVL over the 11 - probably because we had wrong initial setup in group with lvl56 of one of the members. At this point you have bunch of legendaries except ethereal to drop. So there is the way for experiments - to skip all mobs except the greed.

Correct any level that is at least 4 higher then 12 will work, it will most likely be 70.

Like Bkyd FF said, any level above 16 is fine, so 70 is completely fine. But, ethereals use smart loot, so you're going to want to be a class that you still need ethereals for while you're farming. These level 12 ethereals aren't useful for endgame builds either, only to check them off the transmog checklist. So most people are going to be making fresh characters for each class, meaning the fresh characters probably won't be level 70 when you first start out.

Following up.. I am happy to say that using the "snapshot" method, I have obtained all 21 ethereals (level 12) in one day and received the "Ethereal Recollection" achievement. No question that this works! It's a bit of a grind, but all in all, very productive. I only received 17 duplicates. The occurance rates in the tables seem accurate. Thanks for the detailed guidance!

Doesn't really seem like it's worth the trouble of snapshotting a level 12 game, easier to farm rifts in public games. The drop chance might be higher but the legendary drop rate is significantly lower. In the time it took you to run your demo and find about 9 legendaries, you would have probably found 100 at T16. 10% chance out of 10 legendaries is the same as a 1% chance out of 100 legendaries.

And how exactly are you gong to find 100+ legendaries in 10 minutes on t16 with a character with 0 gear? You won't. People will leave you in the dust and you will spend your time porting in and out repairing your red gear. A random dude blasting t16 pub games for keys will give 0 f*cks about you not being able to pick up your ethereal when he closes the rift.

Frustrated luck here. Lvl 70 Barb with 200'ish Paragon to date. Just passed level 40 GR. I received an ethereal at level 12 on my Barb...it was for DH. I have received about 400 legendaries to this point. No primals obviously, as I haven't completed GR 70 yet, but I haven't seen another ethereal for any class yet since either. I started my seasonal character on day 2 of release. I have obviously limited play time, but this season, it feels like the legendary drops are horrible in comparison to last seasons. Anyone else? Maybe it is just me...but in the past, if I had 2 hours of play time, I could almost always get at least one primal if I did speed grinds. Now I can't seem to get legendaries to drop on anything under Torment 11.

On console it jumps to the highest level char. If your playing non hardcore then your stats get a nice boost but if your playing Hardcore then there's no bonuses just a 100% chance of dieing depending on the level of who is joining you lol

Just run puzzle rings with the snapshot. Greed drops legendaries guaranteed. Ancients will help but even regular ones will get you them much faster. Farm shards, buy rings, upgrade said rings and repeat until you have 10-15 and then you'll be fine.

This may seem like the stupidest question ever, but just in case: Do I, as the lvl 12 character, after having have left the game, NEED to switch to at least a lvl 16 character? Or can I just farm on that lvl 12? Yes, that char would then lvl up and eventually I would have to make a new class and rinse and repeat. But maybe there is some weird interaction so that everyone needs to be at least 4 lvls higher.

I wonder, I understand we have way more chance to get an ethereal when a lengendary drops, but the legendary drop rate on T6 is +131% compares to +1221% on T16. Is the Ethereal drop rate so low that farming in T6 is more effective ? I mean it's good to have more chance to get ethereal but if you drop 1 or 2 legendary items in a rift instead of 10, is it still worth it ?

The reason for the low level is to take out legendaries that you have not unlocked from the loot table. He says it is around 9 times higher chance for the drop to be an ethereal over a legendary.

[EDIT: This is no longer working. Sorry.] Here's a method that works on consoles (and maybe PC). Create a new alt character, level it up, and do a GR 40. An ethereal WILL drop at GR 40 if that character has not had any ethereals drop yet. Then store your gear in your stash, delete the character, make a new alt, and repeat. I recommend having a strong LoD gem and a bunch of generic Ancients so you can quickly do the GR 40 as soon as each alt his level 70. And remember to assign your paragon points for each new alt character. ;)

No, because you won't have a gem of ease to socket a max lol weapon

experience scales with game level. If you've already got the level 70 weapon + gem of ease, then there's no point in locking it to 12 since you could just as easily do 70 for much more XP. If you don't have the overpowered weapon or someone to carry you, then you're better off with the game matching your level so you get useful loot and extra experience. The only reason to do this "locked to 12" method is to farm for the "all 21 ethereals" achievement to unlock the transmogs.

you cant and its more efficient than this method but its not good for the mass to publish so they chose this one. because if they made the most efficient guide they would get thousands of messages of how to do it correctly because the other rebirth bug or rejoin bug is more complex and harder to do than this, but you would have a t16 game locket the same way indefinitely.

I get you to do loops to save a spot but that is the definition of finding an exploit and breaking a mechanic. It's meant to bring people into PL not to save a spot so you can bring in your main to farm it. From a hardcore gamer since U.O days this is an exploit.

Kudos to the big brained folks who figured this out! I guess the level 12 setting is there to put a governor (limit) on power-leveling. It’s just a conicidence that it helps the collectors to get a set of ethereald.

No, it's put there to prevent the lower level player from suddenly being outclassed in their own game if a friend/randy joins. Powerleveling takes less than 5 mins to be into the hundreds of paragon, if they wanted to nerf it this way, it was a terrible plan.

Cow levels and vaults are definitely good, but I got most of my Ethereals just doing Rifts. It's kind of a waste of a Puzzle Ring IMO, you're better off saving them for your main to do in T16.
