I like this suggestion. I said in one of the other vids that defense just doesn't do enough. This would be a good way to make Defiance useful. Add damage reduction and raise the cap.

I would also add that the aura should disable the effect of when you are running your defens is zero. So when you would put up defiance you could run and fight and don’t had to bother with monsters hitting you or shooting you. It would be even greater if devs would fix melee in general and you would be more effective with a melee char. I want to see a season where melee gets buffed and fixed.

I believe the fantasy behind the defense stat is that physical attacks from monsters will hit your armor instead of vulnerable spots on your body.

i use defiance merc 24/7 and it def needs a slight buff and dmg resistance, but it does limit your options, but you and ur merc stay alive to tank dmg quit alot with budget gear and dont have to overfocus his leeching or dmg, if he can just stay alive to distract the enemy.... so im definitely a huge fan of defiance merc for all my characters. Love the dmg reduction idea, and a slight buff to its def - perhaps synergize or replace the resist auras with just salvation, it feels like my points are spread too thin GG GGM

ye but you could prayer/cure/meditation and you get even more survivability with very limited investment still.

To me it shouldn’t just increase your defense, which also technically raises your block chance but it should also increase your block chance as well like +20% chance to block and it scales to +30% and those numbers should be halved for party members so that the act2 merc with defiance has a purpose as well, like now you would have a legit reason to maybe have a defiance merc at all, cuz idk if anyone wants him specifically in nightmare and hell diff, so that it doesn’t just help the smither but any character that holds a shield, like a bonenecro given how synergy heavy the skill is you are not gonna have an army to get the thorns merc, but bonenecro could use him to help him and the golem increase their defense and chance to block

Also the problem with defiance is the same as with damage and attack rating increasing skills. Because these skills give you % bonusses you have to have raw numbers to increase by %. And raw numbers are mostly on items so you have to collect such items to actually benefit from your skill bonusses. The skills themselfs should give you raw nubers too to increase by % bonusses. Defianc should add raw def rating plus % bonus too.

Even if it gave a set armour value while running. It would then have a niche use.

If Defiance is the name of the game, my suggestion is to give it some "attacker takes damage" and add thorns aura as a synergy to Defiance raising the reflected damage by 10% per level. This would really make your character defy (melee) monsters. Since Defiance itself is a synergy to holy shield, you get astronomously high defense values anyways. So you can stand in the middle of a group of monsters and just get almost not hit at all. If they pass your 20,000+ Defense (which is about 10% of the time) yoj still have your 75% chance to block. And meanwhile each attempt would make them receive damage.

Good suggestions. I don't think it would do that much harm to put the damage reduction at one percentage point per level, with an additional half-point for self-use. The aura is currently so bad it needs a real incentive to actually make it viable. Maybe doubling the percentage bonuses to defense would help, too. Why not?

I would say the problem isn't really the aura. The problem is how defense works. A rework of defense would indirectly help the aura.

Defense works fine, but classes that have a ton of it already have a ton of it. and Classes that have none are hopelessly stuck in the pit of never gonna have enough to be useful.

In CCGs there is a following niche concept of Design that is meant to help noobs Progress. You give them them something that seems cool with high numbers that in reality is just bad. So beginners get drawn to it and later figure out that other things are just better and more important. Maybe defiance was meant as such a learning skill. Everything about it seems cool with high numbers until you get deeper into the game knowledge. Your ideas would maybe make it a real skill.

Diablo II Isn't really like that, the interesting thing about D2 is that any skill can be something important. Some of the best skills in the game are level 1 abilities. Every skill has usefulness even if it's not the best damage, it might be the lowest mana cost, or best Aoe, or guarantee's a hit. Diablo II is extremely well crafted, and doesn't really need that kinda trope of "This skill is meant to be useless"

so many skills have been nerfed, my amazon has 25k atk ratting and can only hit throneroom 87% of the time, and her -def skills only remove a tiny amount. its like the game was overbalanced in season 3/4 and i didnt notice. is this dimishing returns new or always been t here ? fix inner sight with a buff and slight frame increase

You're level is a huge part of hit chance. What level is your character?

Amazon's attack rating got huge buffs in D2R, they fixed most of the issues that prevented Attack rating from calculating properly, including how blessed aim would interfere with penetrate, and abilities just not getting AR bonuses at all. Attack rating on the amazon has sky rocketed since D2.

@angelofbliss Yeah, it's one of many things that the game doesn't explain well. I only found out after years of dueling. That's why it's important to have melee characters at high levels in duels because it really can make a difference in winning or losing. In pvm, it really is okay to roll with high 80% chance to hit but there are other things to assist, like ignore target defence for non boss enemies and - target defence which does work on bosses at a lower percentage I think. Defiance is pretty much only good on merc or exile for the aura stacking.

It needs to raise the cap of physical damage reduction from 50 to 65. You are again u said it giving up offense. If it raises it to 65 when u max it at 20pts it could be interesting. Plus providing 15% would be like wearing a SoE belt
