I grew up in San Jose always seeing the Diablo range as a backdrop to my daily life, but didn’t “discover” it until I was a young adult exploring it with my car. It’s one of my favorite places on earth. I love it from every approach: Mines Rd, Del Puerto Canyon, or 130. I will never forget the time I was driving somewhere just south of The Junction at dusk and saw a herd of tule elk with huge beautiful antlers, walking under a rising moon- I didn’t even know we had those here at the time. It was a spiritual moment. I hope this sacred place never changes.

I have driven the Del Puerto/Mines Rd legs more times than I can count. Every trip from my home in the North Bay to the south goes through there and back over Coalinga Rd from I5 to Hwy 25, or vice versa. Two of the most scenic and remote drives on the west coast. The full length of 130 must be seen to be believed. Just over the mountain from San Jose is a wildland paradise that probably less than 1% of the people are even aware of, much less have explored.

The first time I saw a Pacific Roadrunner in the hills East of Livermore at the Altimont Pass summit I didn't believe it. I thought it was perhaps a woodpecker. But learning that the area there is the far edge of their territory was an amazing revelation. The Diablo Range truly is a largely undiscovered gem here in Northern California. And like they mentioned in the video, it's likely going to fall victim to "progress" with the proposed reservoir and possibly other intrusions on this very special and diverse region of our state. Can only say, how fortunate we are to experience this in our lifetimes.

There is a well known 'farmer' in Patterson with a bad reputation for planting hundreds of acres of orchard trees seen on the west side of interstate I-5 into the first few miles of Del Puerto Canyon 10+ years ago, as he did this everyone questioned how will he water the thousands of trees on rolling hills with no water available? It then became appearant this was all done to receive disaster funds though the government and insurance companies. The skeleton orchard is still visible to this day. Five years ago the same 'farmer' also had his other orchard on Sycamore Ave catch fire and the complete orchard burned hundreds of acres even turning multiple 90 degree angles around surrounding occupied homes. It's unfortunate that this Eagle natural refuge was exposed. The number of Raptors and other species that are dissapearing is appalling. They're hunted for their feathers and claws, for dance fans, primarity. Native Americans have a lot of leverage over nature. A big factor is that ceremonial fans are often sold in chic Beverley Hills and Santa Fe shops for tens of thousands, depending on who made them, and their age.
