Great video! I recently picked up a Wheel Horse with a 52" deck on the cheap because the owner thought the carb was bad. Nope, fuel shut off at the tank was gummed up and so was the fuel pump. It had been sitting for awhile. Fortunately for me it had the Mikuni metallic fuel pump so it was just a matter of disassembly, cleaning and replacing the fuel tank shut off. I love it when a plan comes together!

Nice tip on how to determine where the lines go. I usually just pay attention to how they came off, but it good to understand how they work.

Replaced fuel filter and pump on my LX176. Not getting any fuel from the pump. Replaced the vacuum hose from the engine. At wits end.

Looks like your using fuel line to the valve cover. If that is the case did you do a mod or us a particular type of sealant?

I have a cub with the Kawasaki 23 horse will run great for a little bit and then like it’s starving for fuel and will sit and surge till it quits but in a little bit it will start and do same thing over fuel filter is full. Nothing in carb. Will the fuel pump cause that

R.BB. I have a 325 JD lawn tractor won't start. I'VE changed fuel lines ,solenoid at fuel bowl,made sure getting fuel form tank to new fuel filter,changed fuel pump but NOT getting any fuel threw pump. To carb.the tube going from engine to pulse seems to be ok but it won't operate pulse fuel pump .it a Kawasaki engine. I'M FRUSTRATED AND I NEED TRACTOR BACK IT RUN WHEN I PUT IT UP THIS FALL.I thank you for any HELP you can give me.

i got tired of messing with these, just put an electric one on for less than the original part cost and hooked it up and mower has never ran or started so well

I have a Cub Cadet 2185 that just started running on one cylinder first time its ever done this Any suggestions. Not using oil or smoking Could this possibly be a fuel issue or plug? anyone heard of anything like this in your travels

Question--I have an opposed twin 18 hp lawn mower. I was replacing hoses and got interrupted and don't remember where the hoses go. The pump is mounted on a piece of sheet metal in front of the battery. The hose to the tank is obvious but the other two not so much. The pump has a rectangle shape and says Walbro on it. It is made of aluminum. The hose to the gas tank is on the bottom.

if you have one outlet by its self it goes tothe carb theoth two outlets you have one conn. to the tank the other goes to the vacume to test leave the one to the carb off place a bottlle to catch gas on the pumpoutlet crank the engyou should a nice stream of gas spurtinto the bottle if so reconn hose to carb you are ready to go

Good video. Comment on what looks like bad fuel being pumped. The fuel should not be that color, indicating likely old fuel. Not bad but much longer and fuel will be more orange in color.

I am trying to replace the pump on an old Onan 16hp twin and have no idea what the fuel flow rate would be in order to get a replacement pulse style pump. Any idea what range it might need to be in? Great info in your vid. Thanks.

How do you test the fuel tank cap? My John Deere will run for a while then start sputtering and even cut off. It does restart though

The cap has a vent hole and it should be clean and easily puffed through with an ordinary puff bulb . When clear it allows two things to happen .One ... fumes to escape when the gas tank gets so hot that gasoline vapors begin to build inside of it ,potentially enough that the pressure will rupture it especially the plastics type. Two... it will let the gasoline flow to the carb under gravity pressure ...otherwise with the vent obstructed it will behave worse than a bottle full of liquid tipped mouth down and vertical and starve the engine of fuel. Hard to guess which of several problems are causing your engine sputtering ... I avn think of at least 6. to diagnose it you must start at one point and progressively eliminate each potential fault. GOOD SPARK AND PLUGS, FUEL FILTER , FUEL LINE FLOWS FREELY TO THE CARBURETOR , IF IT HAS A PUMP THIS VIDEO SHOWS HOW TO CHECK IT , IS THE THE RPM GOVERNOR WORKING , IS THE ENGINE GETTING HOT FROM LOW OIL....THE LIST GOES ON It could be your gas cap .... although I doubt it. I have a Toro time cutter and it died . Went to change the fuel pump and notice a different pitch in sound and also no fuel in the filter .. went to look into the gas tank and pulled the groment off and noice a hose in the bottom of the tank and nothing connected to the fuel line steam itself .I think it fell off which would mean no gas would be able to suck thru the line . I added a new hose but the fuel tank goment is now broken to the fuel tank . How important is that piece ? Bc the hole is bigger now and open . Will that cause no start being open

To THEMOWERMEDIC1.. and viewers . I see already that someone pointed out the arrows on the inlet and outlet of the pump. Anyway .. I just bought new Mikuni like the one in the video to have as a spare for my 1989 10KV generator powered by a 16HP OHV Vanguard motor model 303447 0042 -1 , It has the original pump listed by Briggs as their own part number 808656 and still runs fine .... hope not to jinx myself aha haaa.. The vendors of these pumps ..more often than not, know less about them than the owners of the machines that these pumps are equipped with. Seldom they provide no specs at all about them , when they do , it is usually something useless like LITERS PER HOUR [ LP/H ] because the maximum flow of these pumps is determined by the rpm of the engine ... the higher the more flow, so they fit a range of engine of various HP like 12 to 26 hp. Sometimes even the model numbers of the pumps contains numbers are taken out of thin air . Mikuni website for example does not even list the square single outlet pump seen in this video as a DF52-133 D, but a vendor does, and no information about it is provided by or the vendor except its LPH output without parameters on how it reaches it.... please continue to read ...it will be worthwhile. What is really important is the fuel output pressure to the carburetor.... which if too high, will cause any of several problems.Most of these 3 line pumps will produce very low pressures like 1 to 5 psi . at maximum engine rpm ...so they should not damage the carburetors at low rpm when the engine is running on very little flow or flood them at high rpm. Problematic ...with any of this .... being sure of correctly purchasing a pump is like groping in the dark for many people .. because small engine manufacturers contract the makers of the pumps to equip their engines without the DIY guy in mind, most often the same pump is used by more than 6 brands across a range of engines , but each with different numbers that don`t always include the one you are looking to replace even though they look identical ...and because of it ... the price is what the market will bear. CASE AND POINT ... the ROTARY BRAND 10876, it is listed as a KOHLER replacement 14 to 26 hp .It is also listed as a BRIGGS & STRATTON part number 808656 and , both are the same as a the thin air -133D numbers at the end of the [GENUINE MIKUNI DF52 ] -133 D. Oddly the ROTARY is more expensive than the Kohler or the genuine Mikuni , probably because the ROTARY it supposedly made in GEORGIA -USA but also because they know someone will pay more for it due to the fact that they provide a cross reference number that the others are too lazy to list, so the do it yourself consumer will pay more for the one that does. Nice job with the video ..

most all these pumps will work a good pump will shoot out a stream of gas iif it ok disc carb put abottle hit the starter if get aflow not a trickle it will workdont worry about name and #s if it looks like your old one the carb cannot empty the pump i order parts on line often if it new with outlets in right place i order it so no problem you want damage thr carb no matter what all the pump does ikeep the bowl with gas this is not fuel injection the eng suscs the fuel it needs from a very tiny hole somtime in spray bar

Okay, I have a question. I have a motorcycle and mine free flows fuel without cranking the motor and doesn't stop flowing as if it were gravity fed. Does that mean the pump has failed?

Could just be a cracked or clogged impulse line or plugged in/out fuel ports in the pump itself so a good pump needing cleaned out could actually fail this test method. Always make sure it's lines & pumps ports are clean of debris before replacing one. Several yrs back I saw a system full of tiny dead ants where they actually climbed inside a lady's gas can and she didnt notice & filled up her mower. MTD built mower with no filter (imagine that) so whole fuel system was effected. But I flushed its system of ants & ant parts and it's pump is still going today. It appeared dead too just like this pump. Where ants after ethanol in fuel or was it results of ant leader committing suicide? Idk..lol

Been chasing a problem in a golf cart. Replaced pulse pump. Plenty of fuel pumps to bottle. But cart dies in a minute and runs out of fuel if I give it more that half throttle under normal operation. When I take fuel and gravity feed to carb it runs fine. I thought somehow pulse wasn’t working so I bought a 12v pump and same thing occurs. New gas filter. Carb cleaned, float good. Pulled pickup line out of tank (which was clogged initially) but now is fine. Any ideas? To recap, fuel system is now all new and runs great with a direct gravity feed fuel, but with regular setup drives fine at half throttle, but under full throttle, after a couple minutes it will quit from being starved of fuel and fuel filter just has a little bit of fuel left almost like it’s sucking air somewhere but all fuel lines have been replaced (twice now). Is there any way to check pulse from engine? What kind of pressure and vacuuming should it be pulsing back and forth at? Although again, pumps plenty to coke bottle. God bless, Casey

Is it below freezing where you are running your cart? If it is, adjust the line leading from the crankcase to the carburetor or fuel pump so that there is no p-trap effect, that is so that everything drains back to the crankcase while it is still warm. When I did that with my EZG0 4 cycle it ran well all winter.

you said you have plenty of gas to a bottle is a stream like a pencil or fast trickle ????? are mounting a temp gst tank with hose streight to carb conn and it works logicly sounds like that set has more pressure than the pump provids some carbs have a tiny adj screw in top of carb if so tiurn counter clockwise 1/4 turn what this does is open a jet not much bigger than a hair but it will give more gas it souns like your eng is starving at half throttle this just a (SWAG)

Take your fuel tank cap off and see if that stops the issue, the vent may be stopped off.

I'm lucky none of mine have failed. I need to adjust the valves on my fh541. Do you know the Clearance off hand? I get 1200-1700 hours out of my engines. Is that normal?

No that's not normal. We get 4-5k hours before they start giving trouble. At 4K expect to do head gaskets and reseal

4-5k! Wow! I have an early (1999) FH680V, some say they can be trouble (something about no oil lube on upper crank bushing)? I did get a revised dipstick sent to me from Kawi around 2002.

Put a gauge on the outlet of the pump and start the engine. Should be 1-3 psi

this is on riding mowers -----if you think you have fuel pump problem i may be a little solenoid in the bottom of the carb if you have wire conned to the bottom of he carb you have this type this is thefuel cut in order for the engine to run you have 12 volts with the switch on on this little wire that let fuel flow from the bowl on the carb to spray bar in side the carb very tiny hole when you turn off the voltage is gone the valve closes theng stops no gas keep this in mind we=hen working on the carb. or fuel pump.
