They’ve to be hard if they’re still holding oil perfectly. If they’re hard you don’t need to replace them instead use a small strong wire that can fit in that hole. Gentle press the ball inside and release the oil. boom you’re good to go.

I'm fairly certain this is the opposite. The soft lifters have collapsed and are not holding oil. The hard ones are pushing back correctly.

With these engines, brand new lifters are rock hard, they do NOT budge at all!

Good evening, I have a problem with my 1800cc turbo audi a4 B6 engine. 8 out of 10 times when it's cold I get the impression it's running on three cylinders and the idle is very bad if I hit the gas hard several times and let the car go and there's a weird noise in the air filter and it can shut off.. some other times the car starts and runs normally when cold! could this be a symptom from the valves
