I have a 95 toyot corolla 1.8l. It overheated a few days ago, my mechanic said the problem is the thermostat remain closed and I need to get new heads, water pump, radiator, thermostat, and timing belt. My question to you oldskool is do I need all that or should I just changed the thermostat, radiator and water pump only? Also how much would all that cost? Thanks in advance
@oldskoolfunk71
@oldskoolfunk71 9 жыл бұрын
I would pull the thermostat off run the car and see if it over heats, first step because its the cheapest way to start. Your looking at a few hundred for that job. Do the thermostat your self.
@jltaco85
@jltaco85 9 жыл бұрын
oldskool funk so you mean run the car without a thermostat? I can do the radiator and water pump by my self but not the heads. But what if it overheats after pulling the thermostat off? What does that mean? Thanks in advance

@glenngeelhoed9012 9 жыл бұрын
jltaco85 If it over heats after that, I'd do a leak down or pressure test. Sounds like a head gasket at least. May not be water pump and head.

From the son of a pastor, you just keep Christ in your videos. All things that we do should be in the Lords name. It is he that gives us the strength to do anything. And I know from many ex-samples that I need him when I'm working on my car and truck.It will be a pleasure to serve the Lord one day in Heaven with you. May God bless you in your life and thru your car repairs. He will honor you for keeping him first in your thoughts and your daily work. Keep the faith. And keep the videos coming for those of us that need people like you to help us out.

Finally! Somebody that knows how to do a cylinder leak down test. There are lots of videos on KZbin about how to do a cylinder leak down test and almost all of them are wrong. Some of them done in what looks like a professional shop but the mechanics are clueless. Most of them pressurize the tester before they plug it into the cylinder which is stupid as hell. This man knows what the hell he’s doing. Nice to see a real professional doing it right. Great video.

I really like this guy's videos. He shows how, explains why, illustrates the problem, solution, and cuts the video where it's needed. Too many people think you need to see every bolt being removed at 1x speed. I agree with everything this guy did here, except the use of an air tool to remove head bolts. It prematurely wears the lead-in threads in the head, and increases the chances of thread damage, and makes tiny shards of aluminium that float around in the blind threaded hole. Normally that's not a big deal, but you never know when you'll get bit and have to re-do the job.

I don't make a habit of commenting very often on anyone's KZbin video because there a great amount of 'noise' in these threads that's generated by human nature. But for you sir I wanted to make an exception and commend you on your 'style of presentation' or your 'methodology you use' in the creation of this video. You employ the best technique for some one like myself to get the most out of what you are doing, partly because you communicate the why you do things as you do, from the order of operations in both diagnostics and tear down; to how you logic through signs and evidence of what had happened originally, and the logical implications of that evidence. I have often said experience shows, and it does. But you bring more than that with your presentation. You bring digestible facts for the layman like myself. I learned more than I expected here with you today because your style is well suited to a mind that learns best by first watching someone who thinks aloud as they work. This allows me an opportunity to watch and to listen to experience, before going hands on myself.

So many shadetree mechanics do not know how to do half the stuff you do and most could not ever replace the timing belt on a honda without doing it wrong and you get your car back with a spark knock because because they blindly went by those timing marks and did not know how to get the top dead center position like you just did. Daisy Esparza Rap stands for rhythm and poetry. Put Shakespeare to piano and you have rap. Not to speak for Oldskool Funk, but I assume these videos are posted by and for open minded, do-ocracy, loved-based individuals - not ignorant condemnation. God = Compassion (aka unconditional love) Compassion = understanding + acceptance Without both, or even an incomplete combination, you are simply left with some form of ignorance. Apply what I illustrated to Yeshua, learn it, then live it. Hope you grow. Thanks for the uploads Oldskool Funk. Made my life a lot easier with my 95 civic. God bless

Thank you for the video. I have disappearing coolant, not getting good diagnostics from the dealership. Good to know what replacing a head gasket is all about. Will repeat a few tests myself, block test, pressure test, coolant funnel test, and boil test with the oil to see if it bubbles. The cylinder leak down test looks to be the definitive test, so will save that for the mechanics. Fingers crossed and prayers, that just a leaking hose and nothing more.

@ Trevor Stensland, it could be either one but the majority of the times the head gasket will blow out before the head cracks but it all depends. On this car I was actually hoping for a blown head gasket and it was. One time I worked on a car that had a leak in the transmission cooler lines into the radiator (transmission cooler is on the bottom of the radiator) but that is very rare but possible.

Master here 44 yrs experience. Here is the poor mans way to test for cracked head or blown head gasket or blown intake gasket without these tools. With engine cold take off radiator cap ad fill with water. Then start engine. If any gasket is blown bubbles will start blowing your water out of the radiator fill neck. Doesn't matter which cylinder it is because youre still going to have to remove the head any way Now that creamy yellow stuff in the oil filler cap shows cracked metal and means you have a cracked block or head. That engine shouldn't be disassembled at all but should be replaced with a salvage engine or long block only. The owner did things as a idiot that led to this damage. This car belongs to a fool that hot rods or a cunt that didn't check the coolant level for around 4 years and sat in traffic jams running the ac (which is common) Vehicles tell on their owners

That creamy yellow stuff looked like what happens when moisture comes in contact with oil for a long time and gets mixed (not the right word) by the moving parts of the engine. Am I wrong?

Bro man! You put so much automotive knowledge on the table for consumption! Thanks so much for sharing, your very valuable knowledge! I have shared your link with a friend whose grandson ran her very good and nice 2015 SUV until the radiator ran out of water & the rubber hose melted. Then the engine overheated. He got it towed to the Brands dealerahip. But, without doing any of the diagnostics you just demonstrated, the DEALERSHIP claim the head gasket is "probably blown" and the engine "probably cracked." And repairing that could cost a lot of bread if that was true. Now I know now that you can't come to that conclusion without lots and lots if testing, including unmounting the head and pressure testing it with the right equipment. The dealership has NOT done any woek on the car... they just opened the hood and looked at it. The young man who wrecked the car is extremely devoid of any knowledge about cars. I've told his grandma that the dealership is probably trying to get them to abandon the car at the dealership so they can fix it up and resell it for thousands of dollars. Both she and her grandson don't know much about cars exceot to ride in them or drive them. It's a very nice, sturdy and well kept SUV that has until now, run very well. Thanks again! And may the Peace of Christ be with you and yours. Keep the videos coming. I love you mechanics on youtube! You broke every thing down and DEMYSTIFY car mechanics for us "bare foot pilgrims!" Since watching you guys, I now do my own diagnoatica with a goo OMD diagnostics tool I bought and I changed my own air filter, burnt out light bulbs and oil. I also diagnosed a bad O2 sensor and bought an OEM sensor on line for $104 when the dealership wanted $268 dor the same sensor. My mechanic replaced the bad one and asked me for $20 for his labor (I gave him $50). Total cost quoted at the dealership and the VW repair center was between $380 and $480! With some DIY, I got it done for $154! Do it yourself! Thamks to guys like you!

Great instructional video. Wish I had seen this years ago. I do most of the repairs and maintenance on my vehicles except heads and block work. I know the degree of difficulty varies from car to car, but you made that seem like something I could and would attempt to do in the future.

Thanks for the video man. I have a honda and I've been looking up clips on things I need to fix. What is amazing to me is that at the end of you're video you give thanks to our lord Jesus and all the attention to a major engine repair is no longer the issue. Now they want to dispute his existence or why you give him the glory and thanks. Just wanted to give you the thanks and encourage you to keep on showing you're faith on Jesus our savior. I learned a lot thanks.

Right on mexican12OS, Glad the video could help you out. Man I don't let anybody move me when it comes to sharing my faith, I will never stop and as far as the haters its perfectly fine with me. I remember when I was lost in straight up darkness and didn't understand or get it either. So I welcome anybody to comment and have no problem with their opinions because maybe God is at work in their lives, so I roll with it. Keep your head solid out there and dont let anybody break or shake your faith in our lord an savior Jesus Christ, Contend for the faith and remain a strong warrior for Christ, God Bless.

Taking about Jesuchrist is the most important because he is the way, the life. Thank you Jesus for all the wisdom and knowledge... Amen!

Very well done! I especially like the balloon on the hose to indicate when the piston is rising on the compression stroke. That's brilliant! I will definitely be using that tip when I do work myself. Keep up the great work!

God bless you man of God. the video is excellent. I own a hyundai elantra so I don't know why I am watching a video taking apart a honda. I should have stopped when the compression test was over but I definitely went to the end to see the wonderful ending. God bless you again and keep doing this for Christ

Man, instantly liked and subscribed. The way you explain it makes so much sense. I had a coolant hose come off my Miata while I was on the freeway, it overheated the engine while I was pulling over and now it won't start. Filled the radiator back up with water to test, and it's in at least one cylinder. I'm going to try to fix it myself, this video has been super helpful!

Excellent informative video brother. I appreciate your stand for Christ! Keep up the great work for Him and I look forward to seeing more of your videos. I am rebuilding my wifes 98 honda accord 4 cyl. Seems to have slipped a tooth on the belt and blew an exhaust valve. Took a chunk right out of it man. Cylinders are not scored from it nor is there any damage to the pistons, but I am putting new rings and bearings in after I had the head checked out at the machine shop. Hope all goes well.

After finding your channel recently and watching many of your videos, I'm definitely going to jump into it and do everything I can to handle everything myself with each car the way you do. Keep the videos coming!

Hey Oldskool funk, I have a 2000 olds Alero with only 80,000 miles. I had it two years now and love the car. Recently, car would just cut off while driving and would not restart asap, had to wait an hour, start it up make it back home. Well, it has done this same exact sequence 5 times. Finally, car is in driveway and will not start. It cranks and has spark but will not start. Fuel pump? Fuse to fuel pump is good and relay is also good. God Bless! Happy are the peace makers!
