Diagnosing Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria

People can experience bouts of urticaria over the course of their lives but usually they only last for a matter of days. When the symptoms last six weeks or more it can be classified as chronic idiopathic urticaria.

I had a severe case of CIU about 35 years ago, although no one ever gave it that name or any name for that matter. (I'm 65 now). It lasted 7 years. I remember calling it my 7-year itch after it all ended. I had all sorts of allergy testing - everything came back negative. The wheals were huge with intense itching, burning; which included pain inside my chest. They would appear on my arms, trunk and legs, but never my face. This happened on almost a daily basis. I knew when I was going to have an attack, because my chest would get very tight and painful. Minutes later tons of hives would start to appear and grow. They would last for hours. It made me feel very sick. I usually had to go to bed to be quiet in order to be calm and not scratch. I always wore long sleeves and long pants no matter the season. I ended up being transported to the Emergency Room several times with anaphylaxis and given epinephrine to open up my throat to breathe. It was horrific. No doctors ever found a cause. I finally gave up searching for answers and just accepted it. The condition showed up one day out of the blue, plagued me almost daily...and 7 years later disappeared just like that. Not one attack since. So strange, but I'm very grateful they left. It actually messed with me psychologically also. I did use biofeedback (meditation) to help cope. Wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy...I hope they have found treatments for current suffers.

This lady has absolutely no idea what she is talking about. This is why I had it for 23 years cos of clowns like this. Utakarra is the worst itch to man kind. No it doze not last 24 hours its last your whole life if i dont fix it. Let me help someone. But these dr will take the credit. It's when the blood vessels underneath the skin swallowed and cause lumps there will drive I totally insane. So u have to shrink them back down.the only medication that shrinks the blood vessels back down.is called periactin. I can buy them over the counter .but make I very tired so u need a upper to counter balance
