I love this series of videos with Charlie, not least for how substantial and challenging the training is for a beginner, and yet how supportive the atmosphere! Such a great easy relationship Charlie and Daniel have, I love it! I hope Charlie continues to dedicate his time and effort to improving, it’s honestly so inspiring to see. I just saw a Twitch Rivals chess video posted by another streamer today, and it was so disappointing to see. Just pure mocking and superficial, and it’s no wonder the KZbin comments followed suit. We don’t need this sort of stuff, not when there’s such great material like Daniel’s being put out regularly. This channel (and the Twitch channel) has all my support and I hope others do the same.

If white plays bishop G5 there, black takes pawn on E5 , attacking white queen and threatening a fork through capturing the C3 pawn. Trade of lots of stuff (including queens) is basically forced and you get an equal position (white actually ends up with doubled pawns).

@madgains91304 жыл бұрын
They discuss "tricking" students at about 45:00, but I don't think Charlie is thinking about this correctly. Danya is promoting critical thinking by forcing his students to actually think about his advice instead of blindly trusting it. It is similar in a way to the trap that some people fall into by memorising opening theory instead of understanding the principles behind an opening and developing the opening themselves. If your opponent doesn't follow the line you prepared for and plays the fourth best move in the position, you won't be able to refute their mistake if you just memorised theory. You actually have to "prove" that your opponent didn't make the best move; otherwise they did. Btw I suck at chess and fall into this trap constantly.

Idea for Dark Heresy campaign. An imperial regicide (warhammer 40k's variation of chess) champion goes renegade and creates a cult around the idea that we are all merely pieces in a grand game played by the dark gods. He uses that knowledge to stage fights, massacres, encounters, and generally taunt the party of Inquisitorial acolytes. The party has no clue who the bad guy is, only that his MO is to leave chess pieces at fights that he's planned. Use actual moves from famous chess players to stage weakpoints and draw the party in. If they recognize taht they're now actually playing Chess in tabletop RPG form, they might play back and stage moves against the DM, of which he could respond using a response drawn up to counteract those famous moves. The endgame obviously should be staged in a way that he blunders an important piece and they capitalize on it. A rundown on how the bad guy would see the party: Inquisitor is the king the acolyte team is the queen The assets they obtain are the pawns the various military support they gain based on what it is could be assigned to rook/bishop/knight based on their roles. He will see his own forces as such: He is the king His lieutenants are his queen His elite forces are his bishops and rooks his rapid response forces are his knights, capable of deploying and dropping to eliminate key opposition as needed. Let the game begin dungeon masters. Have fun with this one.

As a Chess, Warhammer, and TTRPG fan I love this
@sephidude1234 жыл бұрын
@@ClawedAsh he just mentions a lot of famous figures for their different approaches and wins and it made me think of ravenor and eisenhorn in their exploits. Imagine a BBEG whose sole purpose is to play one massive solar system game of chess against the party. They send a strike force out to x location and it gets ambushed, a pawn fork that threatens to end the party since theres another chaos strike force in place once the party arrives to wipe them out. They recognize this as likely an ambush in waiting so they send a lone operative, an assassin to the location to investigate the ambush site and kill/capture an opposing operative who then carries on his person a single pawn regicide piece and smiles when he offs himself. The party thwarted a move that would have seen them undone. In response, they learn of a nearby bazaar that's the staging grounds for the secondary assault and the inquisitor orders his acolytes to blend in with the local militia and assault the position before they can react. This puts pressure on the bbeg, who then leaks information to the party through a series of fake informants that a unit of looted vehicles have been spotted in another system, his knight if you will. They have to then position their resources to strike down the armor depot as efficiently as possible, however, in doing so orchestrates a few adjustments to ensure that whatever the acolytes use will be either destroyed or severely hurt in a counter attack soon after. Every move has a counter play. Should be interesting for anyone who likes 40k and has a knack for chess, unlike myself.

I think the real 'weakness' (I don't think it's so much a weakness as it is a non-awareness of the possibitities) is not recognizing the power of forcing moves, and how they inform concrete calculation in EVERY position - opening, middlegame, endgame. And the value of what Charles Hertan called ESTs: Equal or Stronger Threats. In the Pin Variation the attack on Nc3 is so scary to the untrained eye you just wanna somehow get rid of it, and then you end up close to losing.
