Today I look into why the PTO goes hard in the IH 986 as well as demonstrate an issue I’m having with the brakes.

I can agree with you on being bothered by what other people do. Definitely when I get my Camaro SS, I'm keeping it under a cover outside during the winter months.
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
Yea a car like that is worth keeping it under cover

Not sure how long ago you posted this video but with the issues with the broken brake pedal return spring and the problem you have with the wear indicator light coming on every time you push a brake pedal down your brake plates are most likely worn excessively. The sensors are wear indicators and when they come on its time to inspect and readjust the indicator clearance or most likely replace the discs. Chances they are worn out, missing lining and the separator plates are warped from heat. The discoloration on the drum is from excessive heat. I was a dealership mechanic when the 86 series came out and have worked on them since the beginning of their life span.

Video was from about 4-5 years ago, yes, you are definitely correct, they were worn out. They were replaced and the tractor has since been sold. Thanks for watching!

You are a mechanic. That's why it took so long to look at the pto linkage! Lol ! I'm guilty of it. Mechanics drive vehicles that don't run good and etc. Keep but if it came to a customer, if fix it in a heartbeat! Lol!! Good vid

I have always liked the pto engagement on my ih tractors, I have never broken a shear pin on engagement.

I don’t like the pto on -off button. Even lawnmowers same way. It seems hard on stuff to me. Looks like my tractors little leaks. On the good side at least it won’t rust. Wish I had a equipment shed.Another nice video.👍🏻

Yea like I said I can’t condemn anyone for not having one. Buildings aren’t cheap, even after they are up, then the taxes go up as well

Great video as always 👍and a easy fix for the pto too ! 👍have to agree of what you said about the pto buttons, yesterday I was going to collect silage bales with the rear twin bale spear to take up for the trailer to take to the bale wraper with my International 956xl unfortunately it wouldn't start !! (Electrical problems) So today I'm going to find out why ? It uses old technology for the pto basically a big duel clutch with a hand clutch on the left of the dash and a manual gear shift with either engine drive or ground drive, old technology for a 1980's tractor, unfortunately I ended up driving a New Holland T7-210 autocomand with a loader complete with a constantly running pto shaft turning and with an error code 5003 (pto brake solenoid problem !!), something this tractor always seem have problems with !!😡 he should have brought a Case Puma I think ! 😁
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
Haha yea the puma and optom are pretty neat

I always thought the sensors in the brake drums were brake wear indicators. When you said the one brake was dragging because of a broken spring my guess is you have warped brake disks which would also cause your pedals to do what they are doing. If you do need to change the brakes at least you don't need to take the axle off like you would need to on a magnum.
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
Yes you are right on the sensors, and I think you’re right in the warped disks, being the drum is discolored, I think they got hot and warped.
@treeshaker397910 ай бұрын
Did you ever get the brakes to not be sluggish? Thanks for the videos!

I have a ford 671 and the pto engagement is the pull cable style and the threads are all stripped out so I have my pto always engaged which is not a good idea but they don’t sell any parts or make any aftermarket ones like it! I like IH Tractors style way better!

I helped on a farm that the owner left everything sit out and the equipment he did put in his barn and shed was stuff that should be on the junk pile. When he was getting ready for his auction he started putting all his tractors in the shed.

Yea then there was the farm I went to that the tractor was the only thing holding the building up

It’s been years since I’ve worked on international but if I remember correctly that break kickback is telling you that the shoes and the brakes are worn and need to be replaced before he eats up the desk

The funny thing is I’ve been in farms that never change oil in their tractors always leave them sit outside and they always seem to run and work. Then I’m on farms that grease everything and keep it inside and it always seems to have problems. Idk. Funny how equipment works

Haha so true there.

The brakes need rebuilt. I had the same pedal action and the brakes are wore to the point the piston is moving far enough that oil is leaking past until it can build pressure and thars when it pushes your foot up. When I tore them apart I found brake discs where the facings were completely gone and also brake plates and spacer plates fused together. Also found the hydraulic filter was full of brake facings, may want to check that. The brake kit has spacer plates, brakes plates, and the o ring for the piston and after I rebuilt them pedal is solid and even. I still need to change the brake sensors mine leak oil also but haven't done that yet.
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
Yea I’m thinking it’s a similar story here. I didn’t see anything in the hydraulic filter when I changed it this spring

On both my New Hollands the PTOs have a slow start. But you have to stay under 1500 rpm
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
Ok, that’s good they have that, some equipment I operated didn’t so it’s good they improved it
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms37546 жыл бұрын
glad your pto problems were just linkage! new electric pto's can be calibrated on most tractors for a smooth engagement. that challenger 765 was very nice on my grain cart pto. is it possible that the left side just needs new pads?
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
Yea I’m thinking they are bad. Usually the wet disk brakes last a while but I’m thinking they got hot
@vmdairy6 жыл бұрын
My 1086 had the same brake hesitation. Turns out the hydraulic pump was weak. New pump install and the light goes out at once and brakes are instantaneous.
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
Yea that will do it, my pump was new in 2016 and every other function works well so I’m thinking it’s the brake pistons
@vmdairy6 жыл бұрын
My pump was new too, but it was a reman, not factory new, and was not functioning properly. The key is that the pressure indicator light still takes some time to go out.
@markcornell9866 жыл бұрын
my 8920 has electric switch. but a soft start pto engagement. .works very well..
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
Ok, I was figuring they must have had something like that. There was a stretch there that they just had a button and you pushed it and slam!
@kenarnold91326 жыл бұрын
Nice story! My guess is that doctor has so much money, he'll just buy a new tractor when his friends start ragging him on how bad his current one looks. Either that, or he's afraid of them wasp nests in the shed.
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
Yea it’s most likely a tax right off for the “farm” he bought. I figured he would rent it out to a farmer to take care of, but he just wanted to rotary cut everything
@kimculver10386 жыл бұрын
Our 886 would not shift the TA and it was the linkage frozen fast .. Couldn't believe that was the problem.
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
Yes that seems to be very common, the cable starts to go hard. I put a few on already
@alexhammerstone29266 жыл бұрын
Whereabouts have you been in New Jersey? I’m from Hunterdon county NJ right off the Delaware river. Still a somewhat rural area mostly hay and grain farms. Can’t beat those old IH pto levers our 1066 runs the discbine and baler and those levers come in great for working a big slug of hay through the pickup when it gets plugged.

It’s been about 9 years ago but I was at 3 different farms south of Hackettstown. 3 dairy farms. Maybe you know something about it, but the one farm I was on had that NY Giants football player Madison hanging out there?? May sound strange, but from what I was told he owns a farm there somewhere?
@alexhammerstone29266 жыл бұрын
PA Farms yeah could be, I don’t know for sure about him owning a farm nearby. I’m south west of Hackettstown about half an hour drive. What dealership did you work for at the time?

I am not a big fan of electronic pto engagement either. My MX has it, and sometimes it is a little abrupt when it turns the pto on. See how many hours are on that MX that sits outside. Maybe he would sell it...

I guess I could stop, he didn’t live here, just had the property. If I remember right, he used to keep it locked.

I have a 886 that stops pulling sometimes is it in the hydraulic of the clutch. What do you think.
@PAFarms3 жыл бұрын
Is it in TA when it stops or direct drive. If in TA it’s usually a sign the TA is bad. If it won’t pull in direct drive it could be a clutch issue or a few other issues.
@mikeroot78973 жыл бұрын
Direct drive when I start up hill or get on sidling ground.

In my experience the valve on the firewall leaking will cause the brakes to fade away. On both of mine say your sitting on a hill with brakes depressed the pedal would go to the floor then quickly come back similar to the way your pedal pumps back up. Looks like it’s time to go through both sides and put brakes and seals in drums. Come on over to redpowermagazine.com forums for any help on the situation. Some great people over there.
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
Yea this winter I think we will put new brakes in.

Nothing makes me more mad ,customer brings in a power steering box or valve that's full of water or the hydraulic system that is full of water! Then he complains about the price when you have to replace the shaft because it is rusty! Keep your equipment in the shed!

Yea I have bought equipment full of water before, have seen it come through the shop too.

@yogibear62716 жыл бұрын
sounds to me you might have a power steering pump starting to get weak and or a multicontor value problem and I believe the light in the dash your talking about is a brake wear indacter. Forgive the spelling please.
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
Yes you’re right on the brake light. Some models didn’t offer them. Depending on how much they cost, I may just plug them
