Thanks for the well-done video Jules! Q: What is recommended for the foam wipe rings on damper side? Is the PTFE teflon infused 5wt recommended, or the 20wt gold just like on the air side? If 20wt gold is recommended, wouldn't that contaminate the lowers that contains the PTFE teflon infused 5wt?
@patrickguerreiro97604 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering the same thing. I'm about to service my 34s with the GRIP damper, which calls for 5 wt PTFE infused oil for the damper lower. However, I'm unsure of what oil to soak the damper side foam ring in: 20wt gold or 5wt ptfe? Any clarification would be appreciated! Thanks for the great videos!

I can’t find a single video on how to service a damper...

Bernard Goh one thing to remember is grip1/2 are somewhat recirculating dampers and they don’t invest damper fluid. So service is far less critical. If you’re looking for old damper info just go to ride fox.com
Grip is dead easy to service. Buy the shaft clamps and you're pretty much set. Take off the top, dump out old, flush a bit, then fill again. They say it doesn't ingest oil... that's only a half truth. The seal can scrape off R3 pretty well, but can't manage with Fox Gold or other bath oils. Hence why they don't use Gold both sides.

542eastWA good shout out. Andres make sure to measure the foam ring height. Different forks have different foam ring heights. I fitted a push seal kit which is awesome on a 2year old pike a few weeks ago and the ring in the kit is only 5mm it needs a 10mm ring. It will probably work but not filling the gap totally is not ideal and you can push the foam ring easily in the lowers that way too. So measure it and be careful when installing it.

Why is it so difficult to find out what size foam rings fit which model forks? It seems you’ve got to disassemble the lowers to find out what size the foam rings are. It would be better to have the new ones ready in advance before having to take the lowers off. Lower leg services are very easy, but finding the correct parts and oil requirements for the fork beforehand is a time consuming effort. It would be nice to have oil weights and capacities printed on the same sticker as the suggested air spring pressures for rider weight. Along with the size of foam rings for that specific model. Especially considering how ridiculously regularly we’re recommended to service them. I guess it’s made harder to encourage people to pay for the extortionate fork servicing costs, instead of having to go to the hassle of doing all of the research first.

Why is she putting in the specified amount of oil Fox recommends? Of the 10 Fox forks I've ever opened, none have had a total of more than 5ml of oil come out. An oil pan is complete unnecessary. I'm expecting 30ml+ to come out but never more than 5ml comes out. The foam is always near-bone-dry and the wipers have no grease of anykind. Why is that? For you DIY guys at home, you know what I mean. I'm talking about brand-new forks or forks rebuilt by Fox. Also, you'll never find a 5ml pillow-pack in a shock can either.
