It's more complex than how you're making it. He scooped a part of the midrange frequency, the high mids, so the low mids become pronounced without the high-mid competing for clarity.

​@@unknown6390 Not really that complicated, he boosted the bass and treble on the amp over the top of the scooped balanced pick-up setting on the Jazz. He then scooped the hi-mids, but didn't boost the low-mids. This is a scooped EQ.

No, he turned the high mids down, but he boosted the low mids. What he was talking about was a total scoop of the entire mid range.

Personally, I never liked the "smiley face" eq setting. I always prefer to have the mids boosted and the mid frequency dialed in to my own liking. That is the "secret" to a great slap tone.

Great question. It’s less of a 😊 and more of a 🥴. By making the target mid frequency you cut back in the upper mids, it won’t pull out as much low mid frequency content.
