@@dhruvkasthuri6401 Oh brother, I just saw your comment so sorry for commenting late. So long story short, I moved to US for my MBA, for which I took a student loan (I had a hefty scholarship so the loan is not that big, but not small either). So, at the very least I want to recuperate my loan and then some before I come back. It is tough but I decided to fight it out. In the last one year, I met a girl here and we got engaged and married (she's also Indian who came via student visa), so I'm much happier here now. Things are more stable. I will always miss India (honestly it's not even about India, I miss my hometown Jaipur, my family and friends, I wouldn't live anywhere else in India) but I've decided to stay here for at least a few more years. It's like, I can always go back to India whenever I want so that thought gives me strength and solace. Also, after graduating I've started earning so things are better, I can book a ticket whenever I want to go, and I can always visit. Finally, I would say that I'm fully aware the US will not be my home no matter how long I live here, my home and heart is in India. Just the thought of home brings joy to me. I feel fully empathetic for people who get displaced due to whatever reasons. There is nothing like home.

I’ve seen this movie about 4 times and only just noticed that Avner despite actually being Israeli is putting on a really good German accent. Now it’s said several times his dad is German but either way, Eric Bana does a good job playing an Israeli playing a German. Fantastic scene.

The irony (despite misleading title on clip) is: In film, the 'Palestinian" had no idea he was addressing an Israeli - in which case the dialogue probably wouldn't have occurred. This film took a lot of flack for being crypto-this and that, for betraying Israel from within, but one of its legitimate claims to brilliance is in asking "what if our identities were stripped away and we could (at least partially) see things in less biased terms; Wouldn't we come to a better understanding then"? It's a great film, and hopefully the first of many more from the Spielberg / Kushner collaboration.

I love that the movie chooses not to take sides or attempt to persuade its audience to do so; it simply tells the story, shows its characters, and lets us decide who is 'more' right or wrong. In my opinion, one should never always try to make things black or white. Israel, Palestine...there are good, bad and neutral people on both sides. Same in every other conflict (surely not all of the German soldiers in WW2 were demonic, just like not all of the US soldiers in WW2 were saints)

As a Jew living in Israel, I can agree with both positions. As ours deserves a country they too deserve! I believe in human rights first, and then the rest of things ... unfortunately this conflict does not reach an equal valley and does not seem to reach there. Once there is no room for judgment and ego to work above all I am sure we will be able to live together as two states for two peoples. Hopefully one day we will stop obeying the government of both sides and decide together, in harmony and empathy to live together first as human beings and then as a people for an independent state.

Damn, this conversation keeps circling and circling through the decades. I want to say though, as someone who hasn't seen this movie in full, the scene is interesting because of one particular thing that Spielberg put in here: the Jewish man said, "You can't take back a country you never had." But a moment later he says, "You'll never get the land back." And then, "Do you really miss your father's olive trees? Do you honestly think you have to get back all that?" This is a huge implication that the land _was_ theirs, and was forcefully annexed. Pretty fucking ballsy for Spielberg to have in his movie. I'm stunned, but that's why he's a master storyteller; he gut punches you with a narrative about people he is told to pretend don't exist.

Palestinian Arabs **lived on** land that became Israel (and some still do), but there was never a nation of Palestine or Palestinian self-government: before the Israelis and the British the land was controlled by the Ottoman Empire, and before that the Romans. The Ottomans legally permitted mass immigration and land sales to Jews, btw, which was met with violent rejection by Arabs which escalated the conflict that led to the Nakba after the Arab League rejected the UN partition plan and declared a war of elimination on what was about to become Israel. That’s what is meant by saying Palestinians “never had” the land, even if they lived on it. Politically speaking they never did, they were allowed to move and live there by the Ottomans while Jewish return was restricted for much of history.

I feel Munich is Spielberg's most thematically profound film, I've had allot of issues with his more mature pictures from Schindlers List, Saving Private Ryan, Bridge Of Spies and Amistad. While good pictures they're often simplistically packaged in a box of sentimentalism and tied up with a nice bow, never leaving room for the audience to contemplate the themes. However Munich is at least thought provoking in its philosophy as evident in powerful scenes such as this which are as relevant now as they ever have been.
@Gadget-Walkmen
@Gadget-Walkmen Жыл бұрын
lol what? His more mature movies are fantastic and are FAR from"simplistically packaged" in ANY way, Schindler's list tells and showcases the evils of the holocaust and the worst that humanity can do against one another and the movie is FAR from "simple" is showing these real life events. Saving Private Ryan tells ONE part of a fictionalized story of a MASSIVE war in world history and whether or not an entire group of soldiers is worth saving one guy, and this was FAR from "simple" either or "tied up with a nice bow" in ANY way as these movies leave ALOT for the audience to think about entirely for contemplation for it's complex nature of it's real world political backdrop. What you're saying about these films are entirely massively unfounded and NOT at all true and your "issues" with them are NOT valid at all for you to be saying this because they do NOT have any of the issues that which you badly say here in the slightest.

@@Gadget-Walkmen Schindlers List takes a horror like the Holocaust and reduces it to a sentimental success story I highly recommend directors Stanley Kubrick and Paul Verohoevens critique on the film to understand my stance. SPR; outside of the first 30 minutes is quite dull, redundant and thoroughly old fashioned, it’s a generic war film that reduces WW2 to American jingoism. The good guys are good and the bad guys are bad nothing new. It’s not the best War film ever made as some claim, let alone of the 90’s heck it wasn’t even the best American war film of 1998. Munich works because of how morally ambiguous the film is, which exactly why it’s so relevant now, unlike the other two films which spoon feed you it’s themes Munich actually makes you think.

@@peter6914 (Part 1) Absolutely NOTHING you've said here about Schindler's List OR Saving Private Ryan is AT ALL true in the slightest. Nothing about the Schindler's List is a "seNtImeNTaL SuCcEsS sTory" lol "sUcCesS stORy"? Do you even HEAR yourself here? The whole movie's plot is based on a REAL series of events that actually happened of the hopefulness of seeing someone save human lives in a massive scale in the biggest holocaust in human history and somehow you BADLY believe that Steven Spielberg was trying to make that into a "sEntImeNTaL sUcCesS stORy" on his own when the ENTIRE true story of the event WAS heart-breaking and tear-jerking on it's own? LOL Like I said, Do you even HEAR yourself? You have NO idea on what you're talking about as Schindler's List isn't a "sUcCeSs StORy" AT ALL, it's a massively dark and depressing story that's still hopeful of TRUH events that happened in one of the most evil times in human history, you fail to notice that in the most basic way. The whole movie masterfully portrays the holocaust as nothing but pure evil in a super serious setting as the holocaust is nothing BUT pure horror throughout while showing a real life humanitarian effort to stop it all, the fact you failed to see that is just troubling. Oh Yes, I've listened to both Stanley Kurbrick AND Paul Verohoevens "crItIquE" and they're BOTH wrong about it just like you are right now with your "stance". Nice job, but you're just like they are. Schindler's List is literally taught in schools around the world to showcase to students on the seriousness OF the holocaust in a movie from how highly mature the movie. The movie is regraded as one of the GREATEST example of how to do Holocaust as it get as it's the best holocaust movie period on how seriously it handle's it's subject manner. The fact that you see the true dark brutal but humanitarian story of Oskar that's displayed in the movie and SOMEHOW say it's a "sUcCesS StOrY" shows you wrong in what you're saying here and you don't know what you're saying here. You're just saying nonsense here while being immensely wrong, seriously. And WOW! I actually laughed out loud HARD when I read what you said about Saving Private Ryan because I couldn't believe on how bad you have to be to say this as you're just massively wrong here on EVERY account. Saving Private Ryan is the furthest from "dUlL, ReDuNdANT, aND tHOrOuGHLy oLD faNsHIonEd" in the slightest, just LOL where do you come from to say garbage like this? Do you even hear yourself here? It's one of the most exciting thrilling movies to date with full of lively distinct characters that are all unique from one another that you remember and care for throughout the film. Absolutely NOTHING about it is "dUlL" or "tHorOuGHLY oLd faNsHiOnEd" as it's all fresh and well executed for the film with a major them of value in it's center core of the film OUTSIDE the first 30 minutes. It's the FURTHEST thing from a "GeNerIC fiLM", lol where do you even get that nonsense from?, and to say that it "rEduNdANt" is as bad as bad can gets as you're just saying something as terrible as that for the sake of it as NOTHING about the movie is "rEduNdAnT" at all in the film, it's a wholly unique war film for the time and still is masterfully remarkable. "it’s a generic war film that reduces WW2 to American jingoism." LOL Great job at losing ALL credibility here onto providing proof that you don't know what you're saying at all, absolutely NOTHING about the movie is "geNerIc" in the slightest as the plot was incredibly unique for the time and still is. LOL Where do you even come off from saying nonsense like this, like really? For you to believe anything about WW2 in that movie was "rEduCes tO aMerICaN JinGOiSM" shows you have NO idea on what you're talking about here AT ALL here as at NO point is blind patriotism to america is EVERY present to the film, the movie is about the value of the soldiers themselves as it's centrally about their lives and the struggles they had to face AS soldiers in the film, NOT to america. At NO point is the movie showing any kind of "extreme "JinGoIsM" that you badly say here, you JUST bad that garbage up just to complain over nothing about, nice work at failing there. As I said, it's like your TRYING to make yourself look bad and worse every time you say anything here because my god you couldn't be anymore wrong here nonstop. "The good guys are good and the bad guys are bad nothing new." It's shocking on how misguided and wrong you are here nonstop. Showing the complex nature of both sides is NOT the point of the movie at all, nor should it EVER be. It's a movie about fighting the Nazis, obviously the bad guys are bad, no duh as the nazis should not be portrayed as nothing but. And the good guys were not consistently portrayed as good people as the american soldiers shot Czech soldiers who were forced to fight for the german side, despite the fact that the Czech where surrounding. You also had a american soldier kill young german solider who was just a kid. The good guys were NOT always just being "good" all the time. Something you fail to notice badly right now. People have gone in length talking about the high quality OF the film in detail of it's historic value, literally watch History Buffs Video on the movie of Saving Private Ryan to understand this. It's like your TRYING to make yourself look bad and worse every time you say anything here because my god you couldn't be anymore wrong here nonstop as the movie is NOTHING that which you've said here after the 30 min mark, as it's consistently thrilling, intense, heartfelt, emotional, brutal, and tragic in ALL of the best ways that NO ONE has saw coming in a way film before. But you fail to realize that with how wrong and terrible your tryhard comments are right now against these masterful films because they're NOTHING that which you say here, nice going. "It’s not the best War film ever made as some claim," Saving Private Ryan is EASILY one of the best war movies ever made, easily. They repeatedly say it because it's true and how much it's stood the test of time 20 years later and STILL being praised to this day! You just massively fail to notice it's high quality of the movie with your ridiculously terrible statements here. Great job at being all alone with this. "let alone of the 90’s" Yes it was, lol do you even hear yourself? It's the BEST war film in the 90s entirely so as it outclassed them all from how it's still talked about, praised, and loved to this day. " heck it wasn’t even the best American war film of 1998." Whatever you think it is, it's NOT anything BUT Saving Private Ryan. You just fail to understand the film and what's it's actually trying to do.

@@peter6914 (Part 2) "Munich works because of how morally ambiguous the film is, which exactly why it’s so relevant now," No, Munich works because it's writing out a highly complex situation and scenario that has no right or wrong answers to it which is JUST in real life which the real life politics of the movie is based on , unlike WW2 where the nazis and the holocaust are overwhelmingly evil in every way. It's ONLY black and white with the nazis only. Munich is "so relevant now" because the problems in the middle east hasn't gone away at all as Israel and Palenstine are STILL fighting each other just like they have had for over a hundred years BEFORE WW2 even started, unlike the third reich which crashed and burned down as soon as germany lost the war and nazis are just left to be hateful edgelord groups of skinheads sharpening knives to make themselves look tough. There's a BIG difference between these films have incredibly different context material and context matters MASSIVELY. Something you fail to notice by ALOT. "unlike the other two films which spoon feed you it’s themes Munich actually makes you think." Again, Imagine being THIS wrong here nonstop. There is no "unlIkE tHe OTHEr twO fIlMS" AT ALL here as Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List are both MASSIVELY praised and talked about this this day as phenomenal films about war and another one about the horrors of the past that needs to be taught, it's not anyone's fault other than your own for not seeing this. You FAIL to understand context here in the most basic way possible for you to say something this obviously nonsensical. There is no "amBigUgOuS" to fighting Nazis in WW2 and the atrocities they have done in that war. And you don't need "ambiguous" AT ALL for any movie to be of high quality, you just need complexity and nuance which BOTH of Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan BOTH has in their own way of displaying the complex emotions of Oskar Schindler as a guy who didn't care that jews were getting persecuted to being one of the greatest humanitarians in human history during WW2 and to display the struggles and hardships of being a soldier in a team and to question if one life is worth saving over a group full of others in Saving Private Ryan, which these movies are PRAISED for when they handled these kinds of topics right here as they're not to be taken lightly at all. You truly have NO idea on what you're talking about here AT ALL as you're immensely wrong on BOTH accounts on those films based on what you're saying here. You're the ONLY person I've ever seen whose been this dense enough to say this many terrible statements about Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List as they're NOTHING that which you say here in the slightest at all. You just fail to understand context massively here on both films.

LoL "in 100 years we'll win". The fact is that, as the "Palestinian" said at the beginning, now more than ever - the entire Arab world hates the Palestinians, they are stuck like a bone in the Arab world's through. Saudi Arabia and other reasonable countries are keen to have diplomatic relations with Israel and they already spoke about it openly. Their media hates the Palestinians more than ever. There are Saudi journalists who went to Israel and they loved it, they got respect from the Israelis while the "Palestinians" in Israel (with Israeli citizenship) almost killed the poor Saudi guy. So, looks like in 40 years the arab world hates the fraud Palestinians more than ever. The world is tired from this victimization story, look what the Jews achieved in 70 years, they are a Tech super power, cyber nation, and the 2nd place after Silicon Valley. Their tech is improving the world, and if you want to boycott Israel you'd better move to Alaska or to a cave because Israeli Tech is in all of your products and gadgets. so good luck with it.

lmao Fatah was never a Marxist group and even the Marxist Palestinian militias are unabashedly nationalist and allied with reactionary nationalists. And spoiler alert, the Arab world generally only makes a big deal about distinguishing Jews from “Zionists” (Jews who don’t think Israel should be destroyed, which is the majority of them) when they have an international audience who consider it taboo to openly say “I want to kill Jews”. They certainly didn’t make the distinction when 95% of Jews were ethnically cleansed from Arab and Muslim countries as collective punishment for Israel’s foundation. So instead you get “I want to kill **Zionists**, who control the banks and the media” and Western Marxists all smile and nod like lemmings as white supremacists and Islamists both line up behind them hopping with excitement.

That stupid argument of "You are Arabs, there are many countries for you to live in."! NO it's not like that! We're arabic speaking countries that were arabized with time. Still, in reality, we existed in our countries long long before Arabs came from the Arabic peninsula and conquered the current arab countries during the Islamic conquest. That's why each country speaks its own dialect of Arabic which is a mix of Arabic and our native old languages.

@@danghoangluong2942There were Arabs in the region long before Islam, even the Romans relied on Arabs, they relied on Arabs so much that several Arabs became emperors of Rome and one even seceded from Rome, and even long before that, I am Egyptian and many Egyptians regardless of religion are not fully ethnically Arab but rather culturally so saying we are migrants is incorrect, some of us are arabized others are Arabs who are native to said regions such as the Levant. The argument for Palestinians to just move to other Arab countries can be countered simply stating, would be fair for Englishmen to give up England for Circassians for example and move to another Anglo country?

Which basically is proving that there is no 2 state solution. America effectively wiped out the native Americans, they are such an irrelevant population in America in every category. They have few numbers, they don't dominate in any industry, they don't own anything, they aren't the smartest (don't create new industry or innovate technologically), etc. So America gives them free land and leaves them alone, knowing they are not a problem. Now imagine there were like 100 million natives still alive, and they felt that whites and other groups were occupying them illegally? Yeah, that's not happening, there will be constant war. Now you best believe that if Israel could do whatever they wanted without fear of international reprisal, they'd wipe out most of the Palestinians or kicked them out to some other Arab nation by force, but they can't. So they're forced to deal with an enemy population who hates them. Kinda the same way the natives would constantly attack and raid Americans. 2 groups of people occupying a land, neither one backing down, recipe for disaster.
