DIALYSIS NURSING AND PASSING OUT: DON'T PANIC
Dialysis and Passing Out:
1: Don't Panic, you can fix this
2: Lay them Flat
3: Stop removing Fluid (Min UFR)
4: Get a blood pressure
5: Ask For Help
6: Keep talking to your dialysis patient if they are still awake
7: If they are passed out, open that saline until they wake up.
8: Put oxygen on the dialysis patient
9: Once you get them stable, call the provider
These steps happen quickly, and can be done in different orders.
Just remember to do them all.
If they do not recover after these steps, something else is going on. Check for a pulse and if you can't feel one, start CPR, get your AED and call 911.
What If they are dizzy and nausous, dizzy and vomititng?
1: Think critically. Can you lay them flat and turn them on their side?
2: Protect their airway, high risk of aspiration with nausea and vomiting and feel like they are passing out
3. Do not hesitate to give saline per your clinic protocol. It works, and it usually works fast.
Post LOC Huddle:
Critically assess what could have been done differently to prevent this from happening.
Was their UF goal too high?
Did the Crit line predict this?
Was their blood pressure trending down?
Does their dry weight need to be changed?
Once they recover from LOC they still might have other intradialytic symptoms. Cramping, Nausea, feeling wiped out after dialysis. Make sure you educated your dialysis patient as to what happened and why. Did they feel this coming, or did it happen quickly.
Many times patient's don't want to "be a bother." Educate the importance of letting the staff know if they are not feeling well on dialysis and why they might not be feeling well.

Oh, I should have watched this video and made a memo before my interview on Wednesday as this was one of my clinical scenario interview questions. Thankfully, the interviewers prompted me to tell me the right answer to the question at the end, but it would have been better for me to know before. BTW, I am a new nurse in the renal nursing area who wants to become a dialysis nurse^^ Thank you for the great video and I will keep you undated on my interview result later~~

@@rake1861 hi, no I’m not diabetic. It was not fun but it wasn’t that bad. I would just get really paranoid that I would end up getting a really bad cramp while I’m dialysis as that could happen. I remember being super cold almost the entire time no, no dizziness or nausea there was one female at the dialysis center who wouldend up getting nauseated most of the time I received the Transplant so fortunately I don’t have to do dialysis anymore

Thanks for the informative video. As a Fluidwise manager i am constantly reviewing target weights and post weight above target weights with PCTs and RN’s. This video justifies the reason why it is important keep an eye on the patients fluid removal and their weights.

Im on dialysis and passed out when I was getting uhooked and stood up for final standing BP and felt fine for 10 seconds then I felt my blood rush to my feet and felt sweaty and vision go blurry whiteout. that happened all at once with no warning. I didnt feel nausea. Didnt have enough time to react. when it happened I blinked and passed out and feel forward on the floor and ripped my Porta-cath clean out since I still had one line hooked up to me. Went to the ER and spent the night and had to get a new one put in.
