I recommend paralettes when doing weighted. I trapped a nerve in my wrist overloading too heavy with the palms flat version of pushups and for years I get pain if I bend that wrist too far. It's going to be a lot harder due to the increased rom but your wrist will be in a stronger and safer position

Good point, I almost did the same thing doing max effort banded pushups during 2020 lockdowns. I was using all the bands I had ( was about +180lb in band tension) and seeing if I could do a 3RM, my wrists hurt for a couple days after but luckily the inflammation went away

@@Manuel080293 You could have done them on your fists, I don't see why that wouldn't work, it's basically the same as using paralettes. Also, it could happen by having weak wrists. Personally as a forearm fanatic and while wanting to be cautious, I do wrist pronation, supination, radial and ulnar deviation with a dumbbell bar to keep my wrist healthy EVERY SINGLE DAY... :D (I also do calisthenics and arm-wrestling training if curious).

On my push days, I usually do 15-25 of these slow and controlled throughout the day after my main workout. At the end of the workout? 15-25.. hour later? 15-25. Play some games for a bit, stop, 15-25 more. I'll try to hit 5-10 sets of these throughout the day after the main workout and it's just a game changer. I feel waaay stronger after doing this the last 6 months. Being able to control it and pause at the bottom 10%, hold it, and just play with the tempo makes you feel like a beast. Triceps POPPED after this and my bench started raising drastically and felt more controlled. Great tip, for sure. Same thing with other days, too. Pick a light(ish) exercise to just add that 5-10 sets that you do throughout your day after the workout that compliments the workout to just push the muscles that much further. Light is key, because you obviously aren't warmed up all day. Slow and controlled is the key. Great content, keep it up!

100% agree. I always put a slight inward rotation on my hand placement for all push ups because of that better mind muscle connection I get. Once I started implementing that, my chest has definitely grown. Being chest is definitely my weak point, I’d recommend giving these a go. And I definitely gotta pick me up one of those stacked weighted vests you got, those will take the gainz to a whole new level you’ve never seen before I’m sure. Good stuff, Alex!

I bought your Naturally Enhanced book. I will program a low joint impact program for me as I have multiple sclerosis, terrible neck pain, terrible upper back pain, carpal tunnel, and bad knees from my teens. I recently helped move an Elder with his motorized wheelchair to his home in my neighborhood (seemed about 200 LB) when he got stuck in heavy snow about a quarter mile from his home, I asked to help him, and he said that he needed my help. I needed help from a Real Man Samaritan who offered me help to get our Elder home as I ran out of energy pretty quickly. I had bad knee pain for about 4 days after that. This video is necessary for me. I will be doing this variation as my main pushup variation to save my wrists.

Alex, I have completely eliminated bench presses at all angles and used deficits weighted push ups, ring push ups, close grip push ups with dumbbell handles. In fact, I do all my weighted push ups, using my adjustable box squat to raise my feet to a decline (incline in effect but referred to as a decline). I use a push up with my upper body higher than my feet to mimic the straight line press relative to an angled torso such that the press seems to be towards your feet although the line is straight vertical with the illusion of pressing towards your feet due to the body angle. I have abandoned all free weights pressing movements in favor of weighted and banded push up variations included handstand push ups. I have never been as developed and the feeling of athletically useful pressing muscles that do not seem to get as sore for extended periods and snapping my shoulders or tearing a pec seems like a non issue. I developed substantial bench pressing strength over the years, but it cost me shoulder reconstruction (resulting from consistent failure to alter the angle of wear and tear on the shoulders (4,full thickness tears in my left Infraspinatus, Supraspinatus, Subscalpularis and Teres minor, not to mention a torn labrum and a separation in my right shoulder. After surgery and rehab I came back at 43 and set all time prs in all the power lifts at 45. Unfortunately, as you know, when you develop significant strength and are close to your potential, set up is critical and a spotter that doesn’t understand how to give a gentle lift off so your set up stays preserved can really screw your up. That’s why I rarely used a spotter. Find realizing I was still breaking form slightly by not using a spotter and also cheating myself out of cleaner lifts and no danger I would take advantage of buddies who happened to be in the gym at the same time that knew how to help you ease the bar out of the j hooks and then gently guide it as you pull with you lats keeping a set up in tact to the point just over your sweet spot starting point. One day some idiot was in the gym who is very big and pretty strong who offered to spot me. He definitely knew how to train himself to get big and strong So when I try to explain to him what I needed he gave me a “don’t worry about it I’ve done this before” kind of all knowing confident assurance. He proceeded to heave 405 out of the Jayhooks and Totally screwed up my set up and then wanted to keep his hands on the bar. While I was getting ready to start lifting I had to tell him to stand back. I proceeded to do my set which was supposed to be 5. The first couple reps were fine and on the third Rep he’s reached for the bar and Try to pull away from me thinking I said two reps. Like an idiot I pulled it away from him with a totally screwed up my set up so as I was lowering it my shoulder popped out of place. I didn’t really notice until I started pressing it which point I said go ahead and just take it and then the guy decided to give me one of those it’s all you peptalk‘s while I was totally unspotted. I completed the rep and fucked my shoulders up. I took the ear off and when I was kidding back into a Covid hit. I started training push-ups and dips eventually abandoning the dips with weight. I noticed that as I really pushed the weight on the push-ups, I started feeling much healthier throughout my shoulder girdle, I was getting strength pretty consistently And then I noticed I started to surpass by level of development From when I was at my strongest. Also I have no doubt that I would have to spend a few months pressing again to perform the same feats of strength with free weights, I have no doubt that my muscles that are engaged during the performance of presses are just a strong if not strongest contractile force. I look much more balance through my chest and shoulders and My triceps are much bigger. I had been serious about pull ups in about 10 years, Relying on heavy barbell rows deadlift variations and shrugs for my back development. You inspired me to really start getting into weighted pull ups. Within the first two months my back exploded despite the fact that I was using Far less weight than the 425 lb rows I use to do with a good deal of body English on my last set. Now when I row I use dumbbells and cables and get a much bigger range of motion with a Better stretch in better contraction using my lats as opposed to middele back, lowers traps, thoracic erectors and rhomboids. There’s plenty of work for those muscles on Good Mornings, deadlifts and shrugs which I do primarily with band tension. I use free weights for arm exercises, weighted push-ups and pull ups, lateral raises, neck extensions, rows and dumbbell floor presses occasionally. Although my waist trimmed up because I don’t have that in abdominal pressure from heavy squats and deadlifts, my body Weight is still around 200 pounds, I get more out of less weight And don’t feel sore and snapped up 90% of the time After workout. At almost 50 years old, I really thought that without bench pressing, and deadlifting everything would go to shit but Now I believe that you need to spend lots and lots of years under heavy iron to go to the base, but once that base is built you can maintain and even surpass it with safer choices as UAH. Much of my training these days is related to your videos. Great work and thank you.

I asked him what did he do to get that. He said he does no weights, All calisthenics. He emphasizes diamond pushups with reverse bench pushups for his triceps, pushups for his pecs, handstand pushups for his delts, pull-ups for his back, all kinds of ab exercises and he does sprinting and bodyweight squats for his legs,. How diamond pushups affected your strength & mass ?
@jasonwelsh417
@jasonwelsh417 2 жыл бұрын
This is anecdotal but I do a lot of rucking, and I will randomly stop and do brupees without the pack or stuff like diamond push ups with the weighted pack on. My OHP suddenly felt easier

Bring a backpack, or prop yourself up using plyo boxes and benches, then hang the plates off of a dip belt

I noticed you wear the EZ vest very loose on push ups - why is this? Greetings from the UK! :)

Hey alex, unrelated to the video but I figured you should know i tried ordering some clothes from jed north about 2 weeks ago using your code and they told me it expired January 11. I ordered them anyway but I figured you should know. Love the content!

You say to lock out for the chest contraction. I’ve always heard it is unsafe to lock out the elbows. Is that not the case for pushups?
@AlexLeonidas
@AlexLeonidas 2 жыл бұрын
That's outdated advice brother, no need to worry about locking out. It actually strengthens the joints through their full ROM.

I can't be bothered loading them. End of the workout with hands touching has me fatigued at 7/8 reps after a few sets.. And I'm an experienced lifter. As I'm coming into mid 30s I find myself aligning with 'more out of less' attitude. Slow cadence. Pauses. Using biomechanical inefficiency.

Even more of a reason to do them! Train the movements you're bad at.

@@AlexLeonidas I’ve been doing a lot of things I’m bad at lately and reaping the gains. Like lunges I hate them so much, but they burns my quads like nothing else I’ve ever done.

2nd Edit: Gonna post my actual comment. I think diamonds are underrated as well. They are really good on my elbows compared to many barbell presses and extensions. The thing with the narrow grip, though, is that it can hurt the wrist a lot. At least it did so to me. Great video anyway!

I could be missing something here, still relatively new, but could you set rings up at the same angle and do diamond ring push ups? Or would you do one or the other?
