I was just typing the comment when you said DMT aren't what they used to be and that's exactly what I was typing lol. DMT plates from about 10+ years ago are far superior to the plates they make today. I have switched to atoma plates for my diamond plate needs a couple years ago and not looked back. Atoma just has it together and the diamond bedding is so much better and the diamond particle sizing is super consistent.

I agree that the older ones were a lot better!

Joe, I bought an new DMT 325 stone and have it under the Xmas tree. I bought it before I found out about DMTs new quality standards. I guess I should have bought a Sharpal. I now try to watch all your videos. Thanks a lot for teaching us how to sharpen knives. By the way, I just sharpen my home use knives. I also have 2 Norton Cristolon stones so no matter what I will always be able to keep my wives kitchen knives in decent order even if my DMT stone gives out on me prematurely.

if you get a good one, then the dmt is a great stone. if you get one that has alot of trash on it, then it is still a good stone if you dig out the clumps and get rid of the loose diamonds. its just that they used to be so great right out of the box, and now its really hit and miss. even a rough one, once you get it going good should last a somewhat normal knife guy a long time if you use the crystolon for the heavy lifting. I hope that you got a good one and have a merry xmas :}

@@joecalton1449 Sir Please enjoy your Xmas. I enjoy your videos so thank you. I live down in Panama. We love machetes down here so knife sharpening is important to us. I am sure that I will get fair use out of that DMT even if its not as great as it used to be. Keep your head up. 2025 will be a challenging year.

@@joecalton1449 Joe/I just pulled out my new DMT 325 course today and tried it out. I am just breaking it in now. I used pocket knives that I were badly sharpened on it to try and correct the edges. Being as inexperienced as I am I was unable to really get a super sharp edge on any of my pocket knives. They are much sharper. I stropped them also. They are better but not any where near razor sharp. I suspect that after I use this new diamond lap more it will cut better. I cant say one way or the other whether this new diamond lap is any good or not. I used the new Lap dry. I was sharpening in one direction at first. Then after a while I began sharpening in both directions, not using too much pressure. The stone didn't seem like it was cutting very fast but I have nothing to compare it too. The experience is much different than using a Norton Cristolon stone which I am more accustomed to.

The DMT 325 costs £75 in the UK. So $90 or so. Just not viable. Sharpal costs £70 for the 300/1200 and the quality is fantastic.

the sharpal that I videod the other day and will publish saturday after next seems to be a great stone, my first impression is that it is what the dmts used to be.

To be honest I used very similar DMT stone the difference was different grit. It was Extra Coarse. At this time it was brand new I sharpen my planer blade and I noticed that in one area diamonds broke off which was odd. I used free hand technique.

i have one of the dmts in extra coarse from about 2 years ago, it is pretty coarse and gritty feeling.

Hopefully, DMT will watch this very video, take notes and correct what is wrong in order to provide high quality products like they used to...
