Hi. Im a chef from Germany and i have like 30 waterstones (shapton, naniwa, sigma etc.) and 8 diamond stones from Dmt and Atoma. Saw this Stone but the Amazon reviews where not so good. A few month ago, I decided to purchase this stone to left it in the Kitchen at work, and I can confirm everything you said. The Atoma is equaly consistent and for me sharpening a little bit better, but I dont like the feeling. Dmt has some very big particles, for me the feeling and shatpness is also a bit better, but they grain size is much more uniform on the sharpal. So you get a perfectly flat, very good feeling, uniformely coated Diamond stone in two absolutely perfect grit sizes in a very very nice Box. The Box alone makes me so happy, because it realy perfectly fits, and finaly doesnˋt slip. For this money I cant recommend it enough, and i'm happy, that i didn't believed the Amazon reviews. Before my recommendation for professional chefs (not sushi masters:-)) was a shapton professional 1000 and Nanowa Chosera 2000, now its this stone, for even better finish the Chosera 2000 is still awsome for stainless kitchen knives. Greetings to everyone from Hamburg/Germany. Tim

We have been selling these stones at the local Woodcraft I work at for a couple years. I've sold dozens of them and absolutely zero problems. It's nice to see someone else acknowledge the quality of these stones. They are better by far than Trend and better by a not insignificant amount than DMT, which is saying a lot as DMT makes great stones. I have been using four of these in my sharpening class for two years and have yet to even begin wearing one out. It's always the first diamond stone I recommend for someone starting out. or someone who just wants a great stone. We have problems keeping them in stock as they sell pretty much as soon as they come in. What you found with your one stone believe me translates to all of them. Sharpal recently came out with a 4" by 10" diamond flattening plate for waterstones that I have yet to try out, but expect it to be amazing. Don't know how they do it for the price, but I hope they keep it up.

I purchased the 6"x2.5" one recently for NOT sharpening knives... I use it to true up my trizact structured abrasive 2x72 belts. These belts have an insane amount of abrasive material to use, so much so that you would find yourself wearing the belt unevenly long before using all of the abrasives. The stone was the perfect size to stick to my surface grinding attachment to then grind off high spots on my belts to true them up. Not at all the intended purpose I know, but I did sharpen a couple knives with it first and was also impressed.
@jdisdetermined10 ай бұрын
Never heard of those. Are they low grit only? I use a lot of Trizact, but only high grits, 600+. Always looking for high grit media with a better service life per dollar ratio. Eagle Abrasives is where I've ended up, but they're not cheap.
@blakeparthenay304910 ай бұрын
Trizact are commonly referred to as "gator belts" by 3m. They aren't cheap but offer very consistent scratch patterns throughout the whole belts life, especially if you can true them up as they wear. The "347FC" series are what I use.@@jdisdetermined

Love your videos you are the first person that I have seen that has a very simple way to sharpen with a traditional wet stone. All the other videos I saw here didn't explain it well enough for me and expected you to be ambidextrous which I am at a lot of things (I was left handed until I was 4 but my 5 yr old sister told me to write with my write hand😂) but knife sharpening I am not. Your videos are very informative on knife sharpening and I now can sharpen anything with almost any abrasive although I do struggle with the tips of knives at 4.25"- 4.5" but not really anything larger. Because I have learned so much from your videos on the qualities of stone I know what my short comming are and can compensate for it. Despite not getting diamond compound or a better strop that's not totally contaminate free, i have gotten hair whittling sharp. Not perfect and not totally through out the blade but I am miles ahead of any one else I know. I have been able to find enjoyment from being able to get such nice edge on a knife very quickly and confidently instead of just struggling, failing then getting a new knife because I didn't know how to sharpen well. And I too like monkeys from Florida they're hilarious. Thanks for your videos, I find your humor funny, your instructions informative and your shots insane but totally useful to understand what is happening when you sharpen.

I don't have a need for another diamond bench stone right now, but I've been thinking about getting the double sided sharpening puck or diamond file from Sharpal and it's good to know they're able to make good double sided diamond abrasives. I really like the idea of their diamond file because it comes with a leather cover that can be used as a strop, I haven't found many other portable sharpeners with a strop. I'm sure you're spammed with requests to buy more things all the time, and I know you already spend a ton to test out all these things which I really appreciate, so I'm a little sorry to add to that, but I'd love to see your perspective on Atoma diamond stones. I've often seen them talked about as the highest quality diamond stones on various knife and woodworking forums, but almost never with any kind of objective inspection of the stone or the edge it leaves, mostly just how it feels to use.

I have been using this diamond stone for over a year and a half now. I absolutely agree with everything you say! I think I only paid £50 for mine on some sort of special deal. So in all that time I’ve had just about everything you can imagine across it, and it’s not disappointed me once. I also felt that it wasn’t overloaded like some others, where you get that ultra coarse feeling as it beds in. I don’t know if you felt that too? It’s still feels just as good now, and it’s still producing the results as it always has. So I would highly recommend it to anyone! It’ll be good to see if you get the same life out of your one, as you will probably use it much more than me, but I do use mine at least twice a week, if not more. Bought one of these stones a week ago (finally back in stock). First diamond stone for me and was purchased solely because of this review that I respect. Very amateur sharpener here, BTW. I finally had a stone big/aggressive enough to sharpen my block plane, and I also changed the angle of my Ka-Bar pocket knife from 22.5 to 20 degrees (AUS 8A Stainless Steel). Both went really quick, and had a nice clean shaving-sharp edge off the 1200 side. The included "training wheels" angle guide was a great touch, and stows well in the carrying case. Hair-whittling sharp will have to wait until I can re-dress my tired chromium oxide-laden strop with some diamond paste. Overall very happy with the stone.

I won't lie, I saw your other video about double sided diamond stones and since I owned the sharpal stone already I just assumed you were right since I didn't have a microscope to verify so I ended up just 4 days ago buying the dmt fine stone, I don't regret it but now I need to either find a use for it or find a buddy to give it to as a gift for a birthday.

In the spirit of seeking affirmation, not information, I totally appreciate you validating my choice of stone. I’ve had this stone for over a year now (almost 2), and I like it. It did discolor pretty quickly, but hasn’t seemed to degrade the stone’s performance.

My man... You are like the absolute best at not only sharpening but teaching to sharpen all while keeping it so interesting, informative, detailed as hell, and humorous!!... I honestly think you should have an actual TV show on Saturday morning like all the hunting, fishing, and car fixing up shows!!... Or like on the outdoor channels!! Hell I'd set an alarm and even make the ole' lady watch it with me so she'll see just what it takes and STOP throwing the good kitchen knives in the damn sink!!... Thank you for doing what you do my Brother!!

I bought the 45 dollar smaller stone, and my experience is that both sides are (as far as I can tell by feel) perfect. Amazing. I also bought the $20 field version... again, perfect. Thank you.

Okay, after rolling this around in my head for the last for months I broke down and ordered the Sharpal today!😂 Your recommendation for the S SATC was spot on so I figured it was safe to try this one as well. 🙌 Generally I have not been a big fan of diamonds for anything but flattening water stones and occasionally reprofiling a very dull or damaged edge, but the diamond plates do have a lot going for them. My go-to plates for the last ten or fifteen years have been the Atomas (especially the 140) but the S SATC has been great for tucking into my knife roll to keep the house knives at work usable. Thanks for bringing us these sweet finds that we never would have otherwise known about!😎

Immediately ordered a 162n when I saw that it was available on Amazon Germany. Took them 9 days to deliver. It arrived today and I have to say, I am deeply impressed! Definetly thinking of ditching my collection of cheap Chinese whetstones! Thank you very much for pointing me to this! Keep the videos coming! (Even though you might drive me into bankruptcy 😂)

Hi Alex, I bought the $69.99 8" Sharpal 162N from your link but now it seems Amazon is redirecting it to the $44.99 6" Sharpal 156N stone. I almost cancelled my order, thinking that they had dropped the price of the 162N. It's a good thing I didn't though, because the 162N seems to be "currently unavailable" (hopefully due to your affiliate link :) ). Your sensible explanations and phenomenal photography have completely changed my understanding of the process of proper sharpening (I even got rid of my "honing" steel). Thank you for your hard work.

I got the 8 inch the other day. There was 2 options when I ordered and when I went back immediately to look again the 8 inch option was gone and the link only directed me to the 6 inch. I may have got the last one.

Watched your video about diamond stones vs water stones, went on amazon and bought this one a week ago, more or less blindly. Then i watched your video about the DMT-stones and thought to myself a well shouldve bought the DMT one. But now you released this video, telling me the sharpal is basically the best Diamond stone you can buy right now (as a layman of course). This is the first (and tbh probably the last) time im rewarded for cheaping out and buying stuff blindly. I will cherisch this moment 😉

Any stone is capable of doing an extremely good job in the right hand it's more skill than anything else. We are splitting hairs here literally lol. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the DMT is or any of the other stones. I love the Shaptons, just a slightly different use case scenario👍

I have been using this for 3+ years. The course side died when I put it away wet and corrosion managed to get under the plating. The fine side is still fantastic. I bought another course diamond stone to replace the ruined course on the sharpal and haven't been impressed. Seeing your video reinforced the fact that I was using a great stone and have ordered a new one before the sell out because of your review.

@@axlaguilar5289Yes. I've sharpened all of my EDC knives, all our kitchen knives, a few knives for friends, and many for our church's kitchen and it still is flat and works well. I have not used it to resurface any stones.

Learned so much watching your channel. The super zoom in's on the apex and burr areas showed me why I have been frustrated for years with less-than results. I've watched quite a few other channels and the bits they missed ...you nailed down for me. I used the gear I already owned and armed with the new knowledge you provided...vastly increased my results in just a few minutes of use. BTW I did just order the Sharpal dual diamond plate you suggested via your link. MANY, many thanks again!

Alex! This video came at the perfect time for me, I finally realized my very old..at least 10 year old DMT two sided plate was not cutting it ( pun definitely intended) anymore. Worn out mostly by me using it to flatten out other wet stones ( not really its intended purpose) but served me very well. Ordered the SharPal to replace it and looking forward to those whittling edges! Great video and macro work…Cheers MikeR.

I bought a set of Sharpal’s credit card-style sharpeners a while ago and they’re pretty sweet, it’s kinda cool to have a diamond stone that you can literally keep in your wallet for EDC. There was a brief time where they were the only stones I had after I moved in with my roommate and they had a set of shitty kitchen knives all with shitty wavy serrations, and I reprofiled an actual usable edge into the chef’s knife with them

I tried a setup with this stone. A 6 micron and 1 micron lether strap. And got my 5€ wood carving knife that I bought 15 years ago in my childhood to just below razor sharp. Mind, I got no experience in sharpening, and this was my first attempt at it. I have just been watching your videos and am super happy with the results. Now to the practice to get to hair witteling sharp. You make amazing videos and love the actual more scientific approach with the microscopes. Hope you keep up the great content and have a great day. ^w^

@l26wang10 ай бұрын
I read some reviews on this one on Amazon. It seems the diamonds are flaking off for some people, like it was glued on as a single sheet instead of being directly electroplated onto the substrate steel. That may be the magic to avoid grit contamination - avoid electroplating completely.
@uponeric3610 ай бұрын
In the comments here people are saying they've used it for a few years without issues. If I had diamonds flaking off, I'd ask for a return. Seems more like an occasional flaw if it does happen. It'd also have to be some damn fancy glue to hold the diamonds on after multiple sharpening without ruining the surface of the stone - and to not show on the microscope.
@l26wang10 ай бұрын
@@uponeric36 Vast majority of reviews on Amazon are also positive. I always read the 3/2 star reviews for the real deets. The glue is not attaching individual diamonds. It's entire sheets glued on from the pictures in the reviews I saw. Then edges of the sheets start peeling off.
@Kumpelkefer10 ай бұрын
Just read reviews as well and was also confused, many people claiming it works amazing and some people with terrible results. Some people might have made mistakes like using water. But looking at some of the pictures it almost seems like they received a cheap knock-off? Or are they fake reviews by the competition?
@uponeric3610 ай бұрын
@@Kumpelkefer It's possible people could be getting fakes. Tbh it depends on the amazon shipping process. You'd hope it's coming straight from the manufacture SHARPAL INC, but if it ever takes a stop in an amazon warehouse, that's when there's potential for fakes to get mixed in with the real products. With AI, it would be crazy but possible - you could totally AI generate negative reviews so long as you could get a human to post them. (amazon likely has botting protections) Scary times.
