GeorgGreat makes sense to me, although I’m older. It lets me experience computer things that were simply out of my budget as a young adult at the time. In the early ‘90s I was still using a C-64, and when I got my first Windows 3.1 PC in 1994, it was a 286 that was already painfully old. I actually had to downgrade it’s EGA graphics because the main thing I used a computer for was title generation on VHS audio tapes.

During my 486 time, my first video card was a Realtek with an ISA16 interface, slow slugish and 256 colors, then a Western Digital VLB, then a S3-864 which was really fast under Dos and under Windows 3.1. I then switched to a Pentium with a Matrox Mystique, another league indeed.

I remember the day a neighbor gave me her late husband's 486, it was as if Christmas had come early (or at all) :) We were really poor, that 486 machine replaced a C64c that I was still using in 1992. Oooh, now I remember! So this is the thing I used to read about in the "Windows 3.1 for Dummies" book! It was described sparsely, and I kept wondering what the heck is a "graphical accelerator card" and "vesa local bus card", It made me think those are different things outside the video card. I kept asking around in shops but no one knew what I was talking about (this was in the early 2000s and I was given a Windows 95 PC and didn't know anything :D )

One of my products back in the day. A primary goal of these products was high scores on the Windows performance tests which were a prime factor in winning awards and OEM deals for the big box PC builders of the day. Speed, resolution, color in windows + awards = serious $$$$$, back in the day. The Viper did very well.

Back then they were not readily accessible or affordable. You were stuck with what you had. It's always cool to see these things in action, keep it up.

Windows 3.x is surprisingly prepared for hi-color or even 24-bit color modes. It internally works with 24-bit color and on drivers with less color uses pattern dithering in real time. 256-color support on the other hand is done really badly. System still uses 16-color palette with 4-additional colors, leaving 236 palette entries unused. This was intentional since programs can change palette on their own, which will look weird when two such programs are opened. One that lost focus will get broken colors when the other one changes palette. Unfortunately you are stuck with just 20 colors for color themes and Paintbrush. Paintbrush can read 256 color BMPs and will set palette accordingly, but still no way to define colors in palette beyond those 20 colors, and since it don't have color picker, you can't use 256 color bitmaps as a palette. In 16 or 24-bit modes those limits are gone. Color themes are now full colors without dithering and you can use any color in Paintbrush. It's just amazing how ahead of it's time Windows 3.x was in terms of colors. 24-bit color graphics cards become popular when Windows 95 was taking over. Also Windows 3.x looks way more modern with it's simple design than Windows 9x.

I had this card. I still remember the palpable disappointment when I realized how bad the DOS gaming performance was. I didn't realize until I watched your video that the DOS games were using the Oak chip with 256k RAM instead of the Weitek. Sadly that wasn't even my worst tech flame out of the 90s. That honour went to the two differential SCSI drives I bought without realizing that differential SCSI wasn't compatible with regular SCSI. Thank god the internet came along so I could throw my money away in a more informed manner.

My Pentium 3 in the early 2000s had an integrated 4MB Intel 815 chipset, capable of 1600*1200 resolution in Windows for Workgroups 3.11, 95, and NT4. I rarely ever used that resolution though, as the 60Hz refresh was an eye strain, and the color depth forcibly dropped to 16-bit. As for the 132-column mode, I love having that capability on my even older IBM PS/2, though only some OSes support it, and the ones that do have caveats. Neither NT 3.51 nor NT4 seem to support it in full screen Command Prompts, though as a cmd window, I can set it to nearly anything. Windows 95 supports 132-column mode in full screen, but not all console apps do. The Lynx web browser is perfect this way, but I can’t Alt-Tab away from it until I end it or change to 80-column mode. EDIT.COM freezes, forcing a reboot if I accidentally launch it in 132-column mode. The alternative is to run the E.EXE editor from PC-DOS, which runs great in 132-column mode, or the older MS-DOS EDIT.COM, which will automatically jump to 80-column mode. MS-DOS 6.22 naturally supports 132-column mode, though running Windows 3.x has mixed support. If I try to run 132-column modes in an MS-DOS Prompt while in 386 Enhanced mode, it jumps to some invalid mode, shutting off the monitor. I have to blindly type commands to get back to 80-column mode or back to the GUI to get the monitor back on. Real mode Windows 3.0 and Standard Mode 3.1x will support 132-column mode, but Alt-Tabbing away and back forces it back to 80-column mode. Not bad for a 1MB XGA-2 card. I haven’t figured out yet if I can do 132*43 on mine, though, so maybe I just need the right utility.

I'm spanish and I had either a CirrusLogic CL-GD5446 and a TsengLabs ET-4000, and both gave me the best results in gaming. S3 cards and STB failed most of times due to some issues with my Gravis sound card, which later I changed it to Sounblaster 32 AWE.

Fun fact: The Windows 1.x and 2.x GUI was actually designed to work more with vector graphics than pixels and could thus fully take advantage of those high resolutions. It wasn’t until Windows 3.x when Microsoft realized, vector-based UIs wouldn’t have a future compared to the pixel world. About Sim City 2000: I always enjoyed the Windows port because the resolution was not hard-coded as in the DOS version so I could run it on 800×600 or 1024×768 which was way better to work with for me.

Man I forgot how satisfying it was to watch Print Shop Deluxe draw out a scene. I used to love going through all the different printouts when I was a kid just to see them get drawn out.
