I had a diamondback terrapin a number of years ago. He lived to the age of 21. When he was a baby, he became seriously ill and stopped eating. I found a hero specialist who mixed up an injection of vitamins and antibiotics. He was given a 50-50 chance of survival. It was a regimen of an injection and two salt water baths a day. After two weeks, one of his eyes opened; that evening, the other eye opened and he accepted food. We bonded as a result of my having to care for him. He liked me to scratched his head and would stand on his hind legs when I approached his tank.

Thanks for sharing! I grew up loving catching baby turtles as a kid and had all kinds like the softshells, red ears, maps, river cooters, alligator snappers, muds/musk/stinkers, and always heard about the DB terrapins but never caught them. I always let them go and only had a problem when my alligator snapper bit a baby redear's head because of it's worm tongue, but they were so much fun to grow up with. I love what you're doing keep it up!

Great video, love my DBT's! 😄 By the way, a video on the different subspecies of Diamondback Terrapins and how to distinguish them (both as neonates and as adults) would be really fun! It would take a little research of course, but I'd really enjoy it and I'm sure a lot of your fans would appreciate it too because quite a few people seem to run into some confusion discerning which is which, especially if they've adopted their terrapin from a rescue or obtained it from a shifty dealer. Great video! I kept 3 Northern Diamondback Terrapins roughly 5-6 years ago before moving to upstate New York. I kept them initially in a 40-gallon breeder tank and upgraded to a 75-gallon aquarium as they go bigger! I'm actually looking to get 3-5 more Diamondback terrapins for an indoor pond I'm building. We have them all over Wildwood Crest, Cape May County N.J. .They lay their eggs in our flower beds every year and we keep chimney caps over them to keep the skunks from eating them.They rule the harbor and crick( Back marsh) cool video

Honestly I don't know much about turtles and have only kept red-eared sliders as a child... but this turtle is starting to look like MY favourite as well. Their colors are just so unique and amazing. Are they rare to come by? I've never seen one in any store ever! P.S. you got that cool lighting effect that shows in your eyes! Sweet xD

Fish For Thought Haha, yeah, they are really gorgeous. You do have to do a little digging to find some for sale, but you can usually find them available at reptile expos and such. Lol yes, I love my diy ring light, makes the whole lighting situation a whole lot easier instead of giant softboxes 😂

Yes, they are more intermediate, just because they are a little bit more sensitive to water quality. However, it's not like they are more sensitive than fish, so seeing as you've kept those successfully before, I think you could do it. They are really beautiful though, aren't they?

If your a beginner I recommend a mud or a musk turtle as these turtles stay vary small and have funny personality’s. But I’ve had mine for 8 years and he’s is still under 5.

Small note i didnt buy him( found him in my back yard after it rained. He was super tiny and my dog almost ate him.) Its been 6 months since then but I haven't seen him bask in a month, his water is fine, so is the basking temp, and he's super active (aka begging for food) i have been keeping in mind that i have switched his basking area to a top tank basking area to give him more swimming space. But still. Its been a month.

exefile Thanks! Glad you enjoy them. I would say it really depends. Male dbts can be quite aggresive, and sidenecks as well. I would advise against it just to avoid any heartache and injury. If you do try, start them young and watch them very closely. Be prepared to house them in separate tanks if aggression occurs.

I live on the shore of the Shark River estuary in New Jersey. My swimming pool is located on the top of a bank about 40 ft above the water. Twice I have found baby terrapins in my pool. The first one escaped from my birdbath as I was running to get my camera. The second time I found one I struggled down the bank with it in my hand and got to the edge of the water where it scurried across the mud into the water! I assume there's an breeding adult in the wild marsh between my pool and the estuary, but can't imagine how those little guys find the way up the bank and into the pool!! Interesting that they may be endangered. I am doing my part to help!!!

For a tank that is fish only, I would start out with some easy simple stuff, maybe guppies, platies, or mollies. Some corydoras catfish at the bottom, and a school of black or regular neon tetras would be a good starting point. The biggest thing with fish is to make sure your water is clean and stable and you'll need a heater. kzbin.info This channel has a wealth of knowledge about tropical fish, I suggest you take a look around there :)

Hi.. I live in india... I have two red eared slider and one reeve's... I keep them in a big pool... I have made them a platform as basking area... A ramp to get on the platform.... And uvb bulb also... But they are not interested in their basking area... Though i put them out in the sun for 20-25 mins every day... But how can i make them interested in basking indoors... Molly James Hi Molly! My advice is consider how large they get and how long they live. Get the largest tank you have the space for and that you can afford, and also overdo filtration. This will make it much easier to keep them in the long run.
