(I thought Sam's great-great-grandpa died from Megatron's blast, but he turned out to be alive and just blinded from said blast, and that blindness leads him to the asylum.)

I was five when I watched it. I know that probably wasn’t a good thing, but whatever. Funny story about that, I was staying at a family friend’s house when I first watched it, and he already had a collection of figures from the movie (all still in box), and I ended up staying the night in the same room, and there was a leader class Megatron who (with the slightest of light in the room) constantly made a terrifying silhouette. It's weird with the Decepticons because in ancillary media, they're all well-characterized. Blackout is loyal to Megatron and suspicious of Starscream, Brawl is a psychotic man child, Bonecrusher literally hates everything, Barricade is an aggressive bad cop, and Starscream is... well, Starscream. The film just makes them look like generic monster bad guys in terms of character, something I don't think any of the films improved on as they continued.

I honestly really love this movie mainly because Peter Cullen delivered probably the hardest line he's ever delivered when playing Optimus. Ironhide: Why are we protecting the humans? They're a primitive and violent race. Optimus: Were we so different? They're a young species, they have much to learn. Freedom is the right of all sentient beings.

Am I the only one who remembers the way the Transformers website looked back then? The red and black backgrounds, the flash games, the different varieties of full episodes from all the prior cartoons. Yeah, none of these things matter but that website was 90% of what made me a fan in the first place. I was six years old then and I remember my dad renting this movie for me. My mom woke up that night and stopped the movie before the first scene was over. My dad then got the 86 movie instead. I apparently didn't like it. It wasn't only because of Prime's death or me being disgruntled for not seeing the new movie. It was because I saw it inferior to Transformers Energon. Keep in mind, six years old with every option available.

It's unfair how easily, ever since this movie, this perception of G1 as a "stupid toy commercial" has been ingrained in younger fans. Man, have you seen what american animation was like at the time of G1? For its time, it was leaps and bounds ahead of the competition, on almost any aspect. It still had a lot of the tropes and limitations of its era, but we have been too spoiled by a lot of eastern animation today to realise how much we take for granted. Other than that, despite the fact that the supposedly "grown up" modern adaptation of an "80s toy commercial" still felt it had to dumb it down, because modern audiences wouldn't get the sophisticated sci-fi concepts that 80s kids rolled with just fine - I think the first movie deserves a ton of respect, as well. Not only it is still impressive on a technical level, all these years after, but I do admit, that it has an earnestness about it and a genuine awe of its subject matter, that, in hindsight, very few Transformers media has.

Watching the movies back as a child, the Transformers trilogy was the most epic thing ever. Then you re-watch it all grown up you just wonder if they spent all their budgets and effort on special effects and the Transformer designs and less effort on the actual dialogue of the transformers because why the hell were most of them talking like people playing fortnite or COD on voice chat
