I'm with Petrao on this. I understand the concept of preferreds, but the nuances of the underlying price movement and how to manage its risk (i.e., price action and impacts on payouts) would be helpful to me. Of course I could learn it on my own, but with only 15 more days to retirement, I'm dealing with a lot of other issues! Healthcare insurance when one spouse retires early... and what to do with all the excess cash in SPAXX!

I own equity preferred stocks but view them as a disfavored niche asset category. They are equity capital, without representing an ownership interest in the business which is the main reason for owning equity. The fixed coupon preferred stocks are more bond like, without providing the benefits of senior unsecured debt which include a maturity date (with limited exceptions for preferred stocks), a more senior status in the capital structure for SU debt, and no option to defer or eliminate distributions short of a bankruptcy. The only legal protection to prevent deferral of a cumulative preferred dividend or the elimination of non-cumulative preferred dividend is the Stopper Clause in the preferred stock prospectus, which stops a company from deferring or eliminating the preferred dividend, as the case may be, for as long as a cash dividend is paid to the common shareholders. Using cash to buy common stock can also trigger payment of all deferred preferred share dividends under a typical Stopper Clause.

Honestly I like the attractive rates of very short term T bills, but I worry with this new trifecta of government that money isn’t safe anywhere. It feels like the vultures have been given the keys to the treasury and us debt holders would get nothing in their bankrupting of the nation. I’ve converted to HYSA and HY ST CD’s to hold my cash. I don’t feel 15-20 basis points is worth the risk we may see in the next few years. Thanks for keeping us on track Jenn!

Truth is nobody knows. Look over the past several years of numerous "experts" predictions. I can't name one who got it right. Grossly overpriced stock market roars on, insane but that's where the money was made during what should have been a financial correction at least. Ridiculous meme stocks, like Gamestop, continue to draw investors. Crypto/ bitcoin rise to insane levels - who predicted Musk's influence. I could go on, but you get the idea. If you can get a 4% return on your bonds, be grateful. Warren Buffet's no fool, he's cashing out stocks, preferring majority safe haven of bonds. Simple stuff really when you don't follow the herd, just do the simple math

I’m in my mid 50s. I listened to an advisor from Fidelity, that we were having a recession in 2023 in 2024. I missed out on a lot of upside but made up for some of it in equities in 2024. It’s no one‘s fault in my case except mine. But my point is that we can’t predict the future I need to respond accordingly to what the markets gives us. I’m using Jen‘s advice in my 60:40 portfolio, using Jen’s information for my 40% that’s allocated to fixed t income.. There are only a few legitimate financial KZbinrs and Jen is definitely one of them. I’m a subscriber, member and I purchased both the bond basics and master courses. @hkraytai3 күн бұрын
@ You can imagine various scenarios. The larger well funded importers might absorb most of the tariffs but smaller ones can’t so some businesses will go. These big companies will survive making less money but when tariffs are lifted they will have incentives not to lower prices because now there’s less competition. Either way the customer loses. It’s like gas prices didn’t go down after the OPEC embargo many decades ago.

Yes, the economy is doing great for those above the line; but, Its a disaster for those below it. Currently, the maginot line is right around $70k/yr for a family income. Those people are hurting. Their economy is in a depression. Their debt is building and their standard of living is in decline. The economy you mostly speak of is what the rest of us see. The Treasury and Markets have been strong. Hopefully, the run continues. As far as Trump risk... there really isnt any serious risks. Let's not forget this is his second term.
