It featured Fossey’s favorite gorilla Digit, who was killed in 1977 by poachers. Fossey narrated the documentary in front of a live audience in Washington, D.C. in November 1973. While portions of the film were used in various TV specials over the years, it was only shown in its 13-minute entirety during the 1973 lecture.

Dian Fossey was actually bludgeoned to death in her own bed. Many people suspect that it was poachers who were scared that all the attention she was bringing to conservation would stop their business.

Dian Fossey went to Lowell High School in San Francisco. Several years later, a student named Joyce Matsumo went to Lowell High School. Joyce won a baby gorilla naming contest at the San Francisco Zoo in 1971, by suggesting the name Hanabiko (that means “fireworks child” in Japanese) for the baby, who was born on July 4. Eventually, her name was shortened to Koko. 🥰
@obscurelyvague
@obscurelyvague 6 ай бұрын
@emmarose423 4 Koko the gorilla was lucky in a sense. She was an experiment to determine how much an animal can learn to communicate with humans. From what I best understand, Koko actually was going to be sent to a laboratory, or at least it was one of the things considered after the experiment was over but Francine Patterson who taught Koko sign language and worked with Koko decided to adopt her. Koko probably lived a happy life, as much as possible for a captive gorilla but she was still taken from her true environment.
