Here are three reasons why Diana (the Queen of Goosebumps) doesn't sound human. First, she is a contralto, which is the absolute rarest type of female voice. It allows her to sing very dramatic/powerful, very (I mean VERY) deep, very dark, very rich. Second, she has a spectacular larynx. She's been called the vocal Eighth Wonder of the World. Third, she is polyphonic, which means she can produce multiple harmonics within her voice at the same time. This is what allows her to sound like two people at once. (more below) When you add all that up you basically get a person who creates her own auto-tune. She doesn't need electronic auto-tune. She IS her own auto-tune. And the effect when you hear her is totally mind-blowing. It's like she's singing right through you, like a sword straight into your soul. Literally NOBODY else on the planet has a voice like hers. She's not one in a million, she's one in eight billion. Having watched well over 100 initial reactions to her, only one did NOT say she was "unique".

Bruce, please excuse the length of this post, but there is a lot of information to give. This performance took place on September 25, 2021, when Diana Ankudinova was 18 years old during the inaugural season of a new Russian vocal competition called the “ShowMaskGoOn”. Diana was only 14 years old when auditioned for, and won the 2018 season and there was already talk about Diana becoming a “true contralto voice type. When she was 15 and won the 2019 season of “You Are Super” the talk was not about if, but when she would become a true contralto. The 2019 season of “You Are Super” was called the “Super-Season” because it consisted of winners and finalists from previous 2 seasons. Diana was invited to participate in the “ShowMaskGoOn” inaugural season because of her 2 previous wins. For the new “ShowMaskGoOn” competition Diana was the first to perform and opened with her cover of Elvis Presley’s classic, “Can't Help Falling In Love”. She showed what many vocal professionals were saying, based on Diana’s previous vocal competition’s, she has developed into what many believe she is, a true contralto voice, and for those that may not know what a contralto voice type is, a contralto is the lowest, and deepest type of female voice, and a true contralto is very, very rare. Diana has said during past interviews she was unhappy with her lack of a higher vocal range, and that lack kept her out of the more prestigious Russian music academies. Diana, along with her voice teacher decided to concentrate extensively on improving and developing her higher vocal range. A female singers vocal range helps in determining and defining her voice type. Diana’s vocal range was first measured in 2017, when she was 13 years old. At that time Diana’s vocal range was measured from a low of D3 (a solid lower alto range) to a high of A5 (a solid upper alto range), which is good and unusually low for a 13 year old girl. In September of 2021, during this “Can’t Help Falling In Love” performance, her vocal range was again measured. Diana’s functional vocal range now measures from a low of C3 (male Tenor range) to a high of B♭5, (female Mezzo Soprano range). During the opening of “Can’t Help Falling In Love” Diana’s low Contralto voice is on full display. The improvement to her upper range is also on display during the middle portion of this performance. Finally, the depth and power of Diana’s voice during the final section define her as not just a Contralto, but as a Dramatic Contralto voice type, and a Dramatic Contralto has the lowest, deepest, darkest, and richest sound and is the most powerful of the contralto voice types. Also, a Dramatic Contralto is the rarest of the rare Contralto voice types. At the end of this performance, the power of her Dramatic Contralto voice is on full display for everyone to hear, but it’s not just how low she can go. It’s in the exceptional quality of her tone in her upper range but especially in her lower range that makes her so very special. It's in the roundness, fullness, and depth of her sound, along with her ability to create, access, and use an enormous amount of resonance. Diana has also a mastered a vocal technique known as polyphonic singing, which is extraordinary! Her having mastered the polyphonic singing technique gives Diana the ability to create up to two different tones at the same time which adds to the harmonic overtones and can sound an octave, or an octave and a half above. It’s this polyphonic singing ability that can make it sound like more than one person singing which is why some people mistakenly believe Diana Ankudinova is using some form of artificial voice manipulation like Auto Tune, or she is using pitch correction software to alter or adjust her sound. Others believe another person is singing off stage in the background. Some others have accused Diana of lip-syncing over a previously recorded vocal track that was altered or modified. There is NO artificial manipulation of Diana's voice at all, and no one else is singing off stage, nor is she lip-syncing to a vocal track. What you are hearing is the backing musical score track along with other voices on a backing tracks that are used to fill in and round out the performance. Diana Ankudinova, and only Diana Ankudinova is actually singing Can't Help Falling In Love. One of the most asked questions about Diana’s unique voice is, how does she do it? How does such a young female singer achieve such a low, rich, deep, profound, and resonant sound? Without the ability to actually scoping her vocal tract while she is producing those low notes to actually see what is happening within her vocal tract, the general conciseness of many vocal professionals is simply attributing Diana's ability to her just winning the genetic lottery. The speculation is, she was just born with her unique vocal anatomy. Diana's vocal folds (vocal cords) appear to be longer and thicker than the vast majority of female singers. Her larynx, (voice box), appears to be larger and similarly her pharynx, (her throat), also appears to be longer than the vast majority of female singers, plus she has a large oral cavity (mouth). It’s this unique vocal anatomy that appears to give Diana Ankudinova the ability to produce the low, deep, rich, and full sounds she is known for, but without actually scoping her vocal track to verify, there is no way to be 100% sure. Now, during the “ShowMaskGoOn” Diana was competing against 8 other professional singers, Diana being the 9th competitor. Diana and the other singer's also doubled as judges for this competition which was televised over nine weeks, one singer per week for the entirety of the 9 weeks. Diana and the other professional singers/judges were competing against each other, and based on their individual performances they awarded judging points to each other. Each week a different singer took center stage and performed a different song over each of the nine weeks and was required to sing using a different genre of music, and a different style. The ShowMaskGoOn! concluded on November 20, 2021. During “Can’t Help Falling In Love” Diana’s first performance, the judge on the top row who was the first to stand is a well known Russian opera tenor, Yusif Eyvazov from Azerbaijan. He was invited to participate as a special guest judge for this inaugural competition. At the end of Diana's performance she receives a standing ovation from all her fellow competitors. One of those competitors is also a well-known contemporary Russian singer, Julia Parshuta. Julia is in the center row dressed in in red, and looks totally lost at the end of Diana's performance. She puts both hands on top of her head, and looks totally shocked and bewildered. Finally, The Show Must Go On competition concluded with Diana Ankudinova being awarded the most judging points over the total of 9 weeks, and was declared the competition winner!

Yes, her range is crazy for a contralto but it's the tonal quality for me. Unbelievably dark. I read somewhere that they analyzed the sound on that crushing finale and picked up as many as 6 overtones. She just has an astounding amount of resonance. One vocal coach said: "It's like she's got a built-in sub-woofer."

Частичной заменой всему этому - и многому другому - может послужить музыка, но не любая - а именно вот такая, мощная, будоражащая, волнующая, потрясающая. Любой опытный слушатель вам потвердит: на самом деле такой по-настоящему волнующей музыки мало. Thank you for this. When I mentioned toxic it I meant it as a good thing, intoxicating might have been a better word. It definitely had me wanting to come back for more. Diana is absolutely incredible. Her performance here was almost haunting, she made the music feel so different than when it was sang by other artists. The "Queen of Goosebumps" has struck again ;) Mesmerizing, bewitching, magical, trully astonishing. She can channel enormous energies, grab our attention and take us to her world. It's good to see how talent shines when given opportunity in professional enviroment. She already trained her voice even further at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS) in Moscow where she studies, yet she is still super young (20, 18 in this show), and personal experience cannot be exchanged with the very much always needed learning, doing drills after drills after drills (Like Dimash Kudaibergen). Some details of this performance: This perfomance was from the ShowMaskGoon: a TV show on Russian NTV channel where the best/winners of 3 earlier music shows (The Mask, You are Super, Superstar), 9 singers perform 9 songs of 9 categories over the 9 shows/Editions, and vote/judge each other at every Edition's end. So 8 of them (+ the guest) are watching while one of them perfoms on the stage (which not only got interactive background, dancers, etc. etc. but also 2 performance in every show is supported with VR technology, giving full virtual surrounding to the performer), singing live. So Diana was sitting with them when others performed. This gave the young singer (18 here, soon 20) excellent opportunity to try herself in 9 styles during the 9 episodes. In each round, the participants will be offered nine topics: for example, one will perform a folk song, the second - a song by a Grammy award winner, the third - a rock hit , etc. " The nine categories are: "People's Hit", "Song of the End of the 20th Century", "Soviet Song", "Hit from Every Iron", "Song of Your Choice", "New Music", "Song from a Movie or Cartoon", "Rock Hit" and "Songs of the Grammy Award Winners and Laureates". This song in this first show is for the last category "Songs of the Grammy Award Winners and Laureates". So in this way it is good she can experience so many cool performances first hand, live, inspired, and also singing 9 songs from different genres will be challenging but rewarding in the long term. (this is why the others are shown, how the singers react to each other. It is taken from a short story by Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian, Célestine, which appears in his collection "Les Nouvelles de M. de Florian" published in 1784. My grandmother sang this song in 1920.

It is nice to see Diana so genuinely appreciated! Still only 20, she was 18 here. She really is the greatest living vocalist (at least outside the classical world, which I put to one side). Even Dimash is eclipsed by her peerless combination of superb technique, huge range, and emotional depth and power. She has already accumulated more masterpieces than she has years(!), and so there are many ways to approach what is already a large body of work. One way would be to continue to explore her amazing covers, in English, of American and British classics. They include "Its a Man's World" (in the 2018 talent contest "You are Super, when she was 14) "Wicked Game" and "Human" (in the 2019 "super" contest between previous winners of "You are Super," when she was 15). "Personal Jesus" (the ninth and last episode of the 2021 show "ShowMaskGoOn," when she was 18, this performance of "Can't Help Falling in Love" having been given in the first episode). "What a Wonderful World" (video of a live 2021 studio performance, when she was 18). While these covers give some indication of her astonishing versatility, they are but a drop in the ocean. To fully appreciate what she can do one has to take in her magnificent performances, in the original language, of classic songs the original languages of which are, respectively Russian, French, Spanish (and in one instance Arabic). At the end of all that one could then turn to the marvellous songs that, in the last couple of years, she has composed and written herself!🙂
