About the song "Rechenka": This is an old ritual song about an orphan bride. The girl has no parents. The river was considered the boundary between the world of the living and the dead. She goes to the river and asks for the blessing of marriage. She says that there are many people at home, but there is no father and mother. You hear Diana singing in a whisper. These are the words of the deceased mother of the bride. Then the girl is crying. In Russia, at weddings they sang sad songs to scare away evil and the marriage of a young couple was to be happy. Such songs were called “weeping.” The figures behind Diana are spirits of water and forest.

If you knew Diana's life story you would need tissues. The lady with her hands clasped in front of her is an angel on earth that resued Diana from a Russian orphanage where she worked. Diana could not talk after her abusive negligent mother left her in the cold Moscow streets with a broken collarbone at 3yrs old. Her other siblings did not survive, (7 or 8 I think). Her family did not want her and put her in an orphanage. They thought she was defective in some way. Her adopted mother put her in singing lessons to help her develop speech. She overcame immense odds to get where she is today. Truly a miracle.

The song "rechenka" (affectionate from the word "river") is a Russian folk ritual wedding song. There is a version that this song appeared before Christianity, and since early Christianity and paganism were closely intertwined, there are many versions of this song. It tells how an orphan girl comes to the river and prays to the spirits of nature. The song is about how my mother, father and brothers were killed by enemies, there is no one to take care of her. The river in Ancient Russia was considered the border between the world of the living and the dead. You hear an ominous whisper, it's the spirit of her late mother responding to the girl's crying. There are about 30 variants of this song, but the content of each of the variants is based on the sad appeals of the orphan bride to her deceased parents, asking them for "blessings" and help for marriage, for family, to strangers. There are other versions of this song, where the heroine appeals to her brothers and even to her parents with a call to return to earth in the form of a bird to her native home. At the end of the song, the girl sails away to a strange tribe, to a strange family. The roots of the song go back to ancient Russia, it is a very, very ancient folk folklore.

Thanks for the nice detailed comment. I am not aware of other versions of this song, but specifically in this version there is no mention of how the relatives of the orphan girl died. So, I am inclined to believe that the girl's mother drowned, because the river answers the girl's prayer with the voice of her mother.

К тому же, если реку воспринимать только как дорогу в мир мёртвых, то мать должна была уплыть и оставить этот мир. А тут есть ощущение, что мать слилась с рекой, здесь же и осталась в месте утопления. Но в любом случае это лишь моя версия и не более.

Wonderful reaction! Rechenka means "the River". The song is based on Russian folksongs about a betrothed orphan girl who goes to the river (the boundary between the living and the dead) to ask her deceased mother's blessing for her upcoming wedding. The spooky whisper is her mother's reply. She laments her loveless arranged marriage, and then travels down the river to her unknown fate. She was 14 when she sang this on the show You Are Super, a singing competition for orphaned and disadvantaged children. Diana had a horrendous start to life, being beaten, deprived, almost drowned, and then abandoned by her birth mother. During this show she had lots of difficulties with almost losing her voice, and her birth mother threatening to take Diana away (due to her new national recognition). Guards had to be placed at the studio to look out for the birth mother.

At the age of three in the middle of Russia's far Eastern Winter she was abandoned, injured, at a bus stop where she was rescued and sent to an orphanage. Since a much shortened version was made for the modern stage, not even all Russian people understand its meaning. An orphan girl from a foster family is married off (most likely, to a man older than her and not of her own free will). She comes to the river (reka), affectionately calling it rechenka. The river in the folklore of many peoples is the border between the world of the living and the dead. She turns to her deceased parents: she asks for advice and blessings. An orphan girl is faced with a choice - to drown herself, committing the sin of suicide, or still accept the circumstances and "go with the flow". What will she choose? It's good that you explain the song for them. The versions I have seen with captions are just "word salad" with no meaning. Also, notable in this version, her voice isn't affected at all by being picked up and set into the boat. That's amazing control. I first watched this about 3 years ago and had to find out more. She is one of my top 3 favorite performers. I didn't care much for Pugacheva's version and it was, as you say, very different.

Mike and Jess, Diana Ankudinova was only 14 years old when she performed Rechenka. This performance took place on May 12, 2018 during a talent contest for disadvantaged teens on a television show called You Are Super! During this contest Diana sang four songs, "Dernière Danse", sung in French, "It's a Man's Man's Man's World", sung in English, "Rechenka", sung in Russian and "Tomorrow is a Lie", sung in English. It was during this 2018 competition that many vocal professionals started giving Diana Ankudinova serious attention due to the tone quality, timbre, roundness, fullness, and depth of her sound in her lower range. Many believed she is on her way to developing a true contralto voice type. For those that don’t know female voice types, a contralto is the lowest type of female voice, and a true contralto voice type is very, very rare and Diana is starting to exhibit all the signs of developing into a true contralto. The big question most people ask is, how does she do it? How can such a young female singer reach such a low, rich, deep, and profound sound? Without actually being able to scope her vocal tract, the general conciseness of many vocal professionals simply attributes Diana’s low, rich sound to her winning the genetic lottery and just being born with unique vocal anatomy. Also, her larynx also appears to be bigger and her vocal track similarly appears to be longer than most other female singers. You really need to watch her sing “Yodel Time” she sang on the Russian Children’s Edition of “The Voice” at age 13. You will be amazed once again but the video will leave you asking why at the end. I won’t spoil it but you need to see it to better understand how it is she uses yodeling in so much of her songs to hit notes most artist would not dare. Diana is a “One-Of-A-Kind” that this world has never heard along with her natural polyphonic effect that makes you think two voices are singing at one time during some notes that she hits. The part about the horses in the yard just means that there are a lot of people gathered at the celebration, but nobody who can "give her away" in the traditional sense. That creepy whisper was the voice of her deceased mother, and the yodeling part was her weeping.
