And even if he was still in love with Camilla and couldn't get over it, he and Diana could have come to an agreement of sorts and he could have kept Camilla as a mistress while still having a happy marriage to Diana. The same way Charles' ancestor King Edward VII kept Camilla's ancestor Alice Keppel as a mistress and confidante while still having a happy marriage to his wife Queen Alexandra, to the point that they were both at his bedside when he died. If this had happened in Charles and Diana's case, everyone would have been happy. But I do agree that a lot of blame falls on his parents. I have been reading through the comments and it frustrates me that people don't realize what the core problem of their failed marriages was. From DAY 1 Camilla was a factor in their relationship (even before they were married). We know from diana's secret tapes made for Andrew Morton's book and the video tape she made with her voice coach the following: 1.) She was a guest of Andrew and Camila Parker Bowles during her engagement wherein which Camila was telling her what Charles likes and doesn't like and asking in and out if she likes hunting and horse riding etc. She said she was too naive at the time to realize why Camila was asking her those questions. 2.) A short few days before the wedding, Diana discovered a bracelet Charles had designed and made for Camila with their nicknames Fred and Gladys engraved on it. I think imo this is when everything hit home for her. She wanted to call off the wedding but her sisters persuaded her not to. 3.) She held out hope that things would change once they were married but she said that was slashed by day 2 of their honeymoon. She saw two pictures of Camila in his diary. 4.) Later on their honeymoon she saw him wear cufflinks with two Cs intertwined and realized Camila gave it him and he confirmed this when she confronted him. This marriage was a sham from the beginning and the third person whom was only 19 years old was left in the dark about this fact and had find out the truth on her own. That is at the core of this whole mess. I don't know Charles but he seems from the outside to have a good relationship with his kids BUT for this situation he and his now wife was absolutely rotten, for two people in their 30s to do this to a 19 year old girl is absolutely shameful.

@theshillneckedlizard83649 ай бұрын
@@flowerseva Unpopular opinion - Diana aimed to marry into the royals, or close to them. Hear me out. Diana had almost no education (she failed her O levels not once but twice, and came home from boarding school after only six weeks) no work history to speak of (a brief stint as a nanny and then a few months as a nursery school assistant) and no previous boyfriends. She was raised to do one thing and one thing only - marry a rich upper crust toff, pop out a few kids, and look good while doing it. Her sisters had already done exactly that. Diana just happened to land a husband that was a bit more upper crust than most. The sad thing is, I really believe she would have been happier if she'd just marrried an ordinary fella and lived a life as a country squire's wife. That was all she really wanted all along.

09.23.2024 @MKL951 Finally, someone who knows the true score. Charles never loved or wanted to be with Diana, in anyway. Charles was truly in love, devoted, fascinated & satisfied with Camilla & had been years before he was instructed to marry Diana. It was an impending disaster.
@peachygal415319 күн бұрын
@@theshillneckedlizard8364 Diana did not "aim," Lady Roche did. She and the late queen mother had picked out Diana for Andrew. This was hinted to her by her grandmother that she was destined to grandiose things, to marry into the royal family. Hence the nickname Duch short for duchess which she would have been if she had married Andrew. Charles was supposed to marry Mountbatten's granddaughter, but she refused. Then Sarah Spencer was chosen but they only saw each other a couple of times before they knew it would not work. Jane Spencer was already engaged to Lord Fellowes so she could not be the next choice. It was decided Diana was because it was more important Charles have heirs than Andrew; but Diana being only 16 they had to wait until she was 18. Then Diana was invited to a house party where Charles was to go on purpose for them to meet. Yes, Diana had met him before but at the time he was seeing Sarah. This time was a purposely arranged meeting to eventually become an arranged marriage. That Lady Roche was one nasty piece. She is the one that had married off Diana's mother at barely 18 to a man in his 30's then took that man's side, a serial cheater when her daughter decided to leave him for another man. In that old bitty's mind marriage was only for status not for love.
@theshillneckedlizard836418 күн бұрын
@@peachygal4153 Fair point, the idea may not have originally been Diana's, but she certainly went along with it. Not that she can really be blamed for that - like I said, she was only 19 with limited education and had been brainwashed all her life that her purpose was to marry well. I agree with you about Lady Roche - she knew full well how badly Johnny Spencer treated Frances (not only was he a womaniser, he was violent to Frances as well; Diana recounted in the book "Diana: Her True Story" her memories of seeing her father strike her mother) and she did not give a damn. She was happy to throw her own daughter under the bus so as to keep up appearances. The sad thing is, Diana's other grandmother, Lady Fermoy, actually tried to talk Diana out of the marriage saying "What you have to realise, darling, is that they lead a lifestyle very different to everyone else, and quite frankly, I don't think it will suit you." If only Diana had listened to Granny Fermoy.

@K90_ 2019Charles could have stayed single and ruled as an unmarried king. Next in line if he died would have been Prince Andrew. They didn't change the rules regarding male/female heirs until fairly recently. Anne is pretty far down the list. Her kids even more so.

He really should not have married Diana. It seems ridiculous to me that he couldn't just say no to marrying her and at least try and find someone he genuinely liked. His relationship with Camila is pathetic.
@LB-gz3ke4 жыл бұрын
@K90_ 2019 Yes, the new generation of children is affected by the change. Anne, Charles and Andrew and Edward are not. Meaning if Charles never married or had children, next in line if he dies(old rules still apply) is Andrew. After Andrew would come his daughters. I urge you to look up current order of succession. Princess Anne seems more worthy than her brothers, I agree, but that is not how the system works. If Queen Elizabeth had a younger brother, she would not be queen.

I’m glad at least somebody in the comments seems to understand it. Everyone keeps saying “If she did that for me, I would love it!” Well, Charles doesn’t love it. He’s a deeply private person when it comes to his feelings, and all he wanted was a quiet night at the opera where the focus would, for once, be on him and his birthday. Diana’s gift was neat and all, but if she had even the faintest idea of Charles as a person, or at least checked with someone on his staff beforehand, then she would have known it was the exact opposite to the kind of gift he would actually want. She said it herself later, she loves to perform. This was a gift to herself that just happened to be directed at him, really. Not unlike the book Charles gives her later, which is the inverse. They’re not only polar opposites but also utterly terrible at understanding each other.

I like how you put it. I dislike Charles for what he had put Diana through, but I completely understand that he can't just suddenly love Diana just because the public says so. Charles is terrible, yes, but the two of them reallu spoke two different languages. Charles needed a *consort* who's proper, obedient, and will keep quiet and prim beside him. Whereas Diana was not a consort, she was a delight to have, a beacon, a princess to people's heart. Charles needed a consort who supported him and expected to be silent about all his craps, a light that was not too bright that it'd outshine him. Diana needed a prince who would love her unconditionally and treated her like the princess she was. They both spoke different languages and wished a completely different thing.

Because he'd spent his entire life not having any real love or approval from his family so tried to find it in the public, only to be completely outshined by the radiance that is Diana. I think it also might have been because Diana also outshined Camilla, who would never be loved by the public either. Still incredibly cruel and petty though.

Maybe it’s inconceivable to you because you weren’t forced and pressured into marrying someone you didn’t want to marry? I know what Charles and the Royal family did to her was unforgivable. But the fact remains that they should have never married in the first place. They were different like chalk and cheese. I remember a line from this season, delivered by Princess Anne, "he is 13 years older than her, so there is the age gap, but he acts older than he is and she acts younger than she is. It makes that an age chasm". One should watch that scene, it lays down the reasons quite correctly as to why this didn't work. Charles had a completely different upbringing, this kind of flamboyance is too childish and selfish in his eyes. He had been made to believe that there is no place for OTT show of emotions even inside the family, forget outside it. Add to that fact that he already knew someone who matched his wavelength, he was never ready to give Diana a chance or a benefit of doubt.

Sorry for my bad English - I'm an Italian girl who has been living in England only since the end of July. I've always been fascinated by the story of Princess Diana, but of course being a non-British person always kept me away from many details of her tragic life. I've started making some research about her in the last few weeks - lockdown...-, and I came to the conclusion that...it was neither Charles nor Diana's fault if things didn't work between them. As for Diana, I think that she was far too young even to understand what she was going to throw herself into. I remember myself at age 18 - now I'm 27 - and I was such a stupid brat who always made foolish decisions just because I didn't have enough maturity to understand how the world worked. I'm saying that I can imagine how she felt. You're 18, you've never had a boyfriend and you have no idea how a relationship works, and suddenly the Prince of Wales - I mean, not Joe whatchamacallit! - proposes to you. I can imagine she was under so much pressure and she thought she was living a fairytale that she simply couldn't realize what she was truly going to face until it was too late. I mean, many people wouldn't have the courage to call off a wedding even in "normal" life, who would ever be so ballsy to say "No, I don't want to marry you!" to the Prince of Wales just hours before the wedding itself? Especially if you're 19... Of course, one could argue that, being Charles so much older than her, he would have had to be the brave one and stand his ground when it came to marry Camilla, or at least refuse to marry Diana. But I think that after he saw his chances to marry Camilla fading away, he simply went on and did his duty as the future king - marry a woman whom the people would love and who could give him children - hoping that would work somehow. In the end, I think it was nobody's fault. He was a grown-up man who perhaps wasn't brave enough and found himself dealing with a bride who was too young and too far away from him; she was a lovely young girl who dreamed of happiness and she still hadn't the strenght to endure all the pain of the royal life. But I like to think that both of them tried their best to make the marriage work, at least for a while - but it was simply not meant to be. The fact that she died so young and so tragically did the rest.

Something I learned from my family: don't get married too young, don't get married too quickly, and don't get married to someone who seems way better/worse than you. I know this might not be 100% true, but it can help young people avoid about 80% of marriages that end with divorce
