Diana Ross got top billing for this duet album which was recorded in a 3 year period . Pregnant with Rhonda, Miss Ross was concerned about Marvin Gayes smoking habits since they would be together in a booth during long recording sessions. So it was decided that they record separately . Never the less, there is an undeniable fusion between the two stars on this beautiful love album.

Marvin Gaye was a reluctant performer it's not that he didn't enjoy performing it was the drive of the business that he hated Releasing an album indicated there was going to be a tour behind the album Marvin Gaye did not enjoy touring at all. Not that he enjoyed performing, if you're in this business on tour you see the bus the airplane the venue that you're performing and nothing for a year. The album is soulful. The vocals are sung lovingly and intimate. The comfort of this album should have indicated a follow-up

Yes, Truly a spectacular duet album. Makes me wish Diana Ross and Michael Jackson made a duet album of friendship. Nevertheless the bonus tracks added later are wonderful. 💋

I watched the entire video then laid back and listened to the original album with my eyes closed. I had heard that it was recorded separately due to Diana not wanting to sing with all that smoke…and it turned out flawless. Even “Don’t Knock My Love” sounds fantastic…although Diana hated the song, you can’t tell. These are real singers and there’s a difference when someone knows how to improvise those oohs, heys, screams and shouts…that’s Rock & Roll at its truest forum. I absolutely love the sound of Diana’s voice…it’s smooth, silky, piercing…those Supreme songs, just listen to how unique her voice is. It makes you pay attention to it. Plus, nobody can speak the song lyrics as clear and beautiful as she can…and she enunciates!!! The Boss for sure. ❤️

Another interesting take on a classic Ross album. Interestingly in an early 70s interview in Blues & Soul magazine Diana mentions her then forthcoming album of duets with Marvin slated for Sept that year and said it was to be entitled ‘Art & Honey’ - written and produced entirely Ashford & Simpson. Obviously that all changed but suggests 'I've Come To Love You So Much' was part of the earliest sessions for the album and that perhaps there are other Nick & Val tunes in the vault...

I'll never understand why Motown didn't put out "You Are Evrything" as a single in the US. I can't really think of a reason why? Every friend I've ever played it for over the years is WOW'ed by it, and agree it is every bit as good as the Stylistics' original, if not even better. And I adore the Stylistics! That beautiful voice of Russel Thompkins Jr. is to my ears the best falsetto voice of all time. Some people will say Barry Gibb, and I love his voice too..... Anyhoo, PLEASE review your Top 50 favorite Diana Ross albums LOL! We will keep watching! Lots of love.

Brilliant album and one of my faves - best track from the original release is "My Mistake" (which I still seem to hear somewhat often when out shopping). And from the reissued version, I LOVE "The Things I Will Not Miss."

This was a very nice album but NO MAGIC the way Marvin had with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, and especially Tammi Terrell. But there are some good songs on there and I was glad when this album came out which was my last year in high school.

Another great passionate and very personal review of a classic album. I've always found this one to be fascinating. In the USA this project is regarded as a misstep and a bit of a flop. Both artists as you point out were at their artistic and commercial peak when they recorded these tracks and much was expected from paring Motown's two biggest solo stars on such a prestigious project. In comparison to Touch Me In The Morning & Let's Get It On it sold poorly and the singles also underperformed on the Hot 100. On the other side of the Atlantic it was a very different story. Marvin's What's Going On and Lets Get It On were not big sellers neither the singles from these two albums or the albums themselves managed to chart in the UK. Marvin was more of a cult niche artist here with just a handful of UK chart hits- I Heard It Through The Grapevine had been a massive No1 here but mostly his records failed to capture the public's imagination- even his duets with Tammi Terrell struggled including AIn't No Mountain High Enough which didn't make the UK Top 50- INCREDIBLE! Diana & Marvin was a massive seller for them here in the UK spending many weeks on the chart and sitting in the Top5 for a while. The first single You're A Special Part of Me, released in December 1973, failed to chart- just missing out on a Top 50 place but their cover of the Stylistics "You Are Everything was MASSIVE and reached the UK Top5. It remains one of Motion's biggest selling UK hits and one of the most successful UK chart hits for both Diana and Marvin. It is such a popular song here. The follow up was another Stlylistics cover Stop Look & Listen To Your Heart. It managed to reach the mid 20s. My Mistake was the 4th single from the album but it too just missed out on a Top 50 position. I've always loved this album. It's a combination of Motown and the Philly Sound which was of course in the process of overtaking Motown at this point as the most successful Soul/R&B label. In my opinion the two covers are the definitive versions of the songs, far superior to those Stylistics originals that had been big sellers in the US around 1972. Motown in the USA chose not to release these tracks and to me that was a massive mistake- they are the standout tracks on the album. The frosty relationship between the two stars while recording this album is well documented. Mavin was constantly high and his ego was out of control. Diana was on top of the world and of course very heavily pregnant. Who could blame her for protecting her baby's health? Marvin's ego was out of control and he actually believed he would have top billing- he is reputed to have gone ballistic when he first saw the promotional material where he was "and". A lot is made of the fact the two didn't record together and therefore the magic is missing yada yada- but this is all nonsense. There was nothing new in having artists record their parts at different times- it was very common and of course their WAS magic and the UK public heard it and loved it! I do like the bonus tracks that were included on recent remastered reissues. It's now almost 50 years since it was released and it remains a terrific album. There is another FANTASTIC cover version of You Are Everything with a very different slower arrangement recorded by the legendary Roberta Flack in her own inimitable style. Well worth checking it out!
