SHE SANG & ACTED HER ENTIRE ASS OFF IN THIS CULT CLASSIC OF A FILM ! SHE SHOULD HAVE WON BEST ACTRESS THAT YEAR ! SHE CHANNELED THE HELL OUT OF BILLIE HOLIDAY ... WITH EASE !
@marriethesassycrafter63244 жыл бұрын
You are 190% right she should have won they said in this movie she sounded more like Billie Holiday then Billie Holiday so they said to her you need to tone that down girl it was that good she was robbed of that Oscar robbed and for what don't get me wrong I love me some Liza Minnelli but no way shape or form did she deserve to beat Diana Ross out of that Oscar

@@robertcecilmorgan-wilde Berry Gordy knew who could carry the role and she did a very good job. But saying Diana Ross sang it better than Lady Day, the best singer that has ever graced this earth, is simply more than ridiculous!

Diana Ross was great in this film, and should have taken the oscar, however that will never change the fact that this is and will forever be a classic.

My girl was definitely done a 'great injustice' when she was overlooked for the OSCAR! If anyone as GLAMOROUS as The Boss can play this type of complex role- then the Oscar should have been rightfully hers!

I cried when this scene came up. It's such a beautiful song,I felt so bad for Billie Holiday. Being a black woman during those times; while trying to cross over was extremely difficult, testing, and almost impossible. As a black woman living in these times it's hard to become successful but definitely possible.

Her voice covering this song as well as her facial expressions are so exact, expressive, spiritual, realistic, and unparalleled. She is one of the few who can really sing and act. This is what Berry saw in her for all those naysayers, RARE COMMERCIAL TALENT AND POTENTIAL.

I remember going to see Lady Sings The Blues with two young ladies and when Diana sang this song, we all were crying. I said to my friend, pass the tissue and we all were laughing and crying at the same time. Her performance of this song was truly the highlight of the movie. It doesn't get any better than that! Perfection and Brilliant!

This is the most intimate moment in the film... The singer and the audience. Diana's screen debut was stunning. What she was called upon to do in this role I don't think was expected. She should have been the first African American to win best actress.

This is the movie that really enhanced Billie Holiday's reputation, those who hadn't heard of her suddenly reached out for her book & life's story. Diana Ross sings this Billie Holiday classic with great aplomb that even the great lady Day would've been proud, from the movie Lady Sings The Blues soundtrack album in which the Motown diva gave an Oscar winning performance. but didn't win one, why oh why?

I agree with all your comments - I feel that Berry Gordy does not really get the appreciation he deserves - I am sure he was not always the easiest of people to deal with - but then at that time could he have been? The catalogue of work that he was in some way responsible for is amazing and we should not forget this was at a time when it wasn't that easy!

@HERBLANDZ, you nailed it. Racism! Diana was gorgeous & talented to the extent that she could rival white woman for she had that appeal & grace so the industry never recognized her in the States. Yet, abroad she swept up the awards. That's why musically the industry would find ways not to award her by clumping her into R&B inappropriately, etc, so they could give music awards to other blacks who fit the expectations in either sound &/or looks. Then she was unappreciated in her own community to some extent for she did not fit up to their cultural expectations. Abroad success always carried Diana's uniqueness.
