The essence of Billie Holiday, one of America's most loved and memorable singers,is captured brilliantly in a tour-de-force debut performance by singer Diana Ross. Will try to get up rest of movie as soon as possible.I do not own copyrights to this movie.

Baby when people saw the glamourous Diana Ross going through herion withdrawls in a straightjacket and padded cell, they instantly felt she was proved her acting chops.

Too early back in the day for black people to get recognized or even have a chance to start in a serious movie like this one. She got an Oscar nomination. If this movie came out today Diana Ross would've gotten that Oscar for "Actress in a leading roll".....AND the movie itself would've received at least 5 academy awards for the supporting roles, the story line, costumes, musical arrangement and cinematography. OUTSTANDING MOVIE!! That's why this lady will always be an unforgettable legend.

Excellent performance by Miss Ross...I still think she should've won the Oscar for this film...this being her first lead in a feature film was superb for acting and the Academy knew it, she was a shoe in for the award, but the Academy was biased because Liza Minelli, Hollywoods so-called royalty was given preferential treatment because of her families history in cinema won over Ross. What a shame, Diana deserved to win.

Liza was also a star in her own right, preforming internationally before she was even cast in Cabaret, she was also nominated for best actress three years prior, Lizas performance in cabaret was excellent, Diana Ross’ performance was also great but the film wasn’t very accurate about Billie Holidays story + Diana Ross was a newcomer to the film industry. Tbh even if it wasn’t Liza it probably would’ve been Cicely Tyson

On this day in 1972 the Billie Holiday bio movie "Lady Sings The Blues" had its world premier... Diana Ross, who portrayed Billie Holiday, was nominated for an Academy Award for 'Best Actress' {winner Liza Minnelli for 'Cabaret'}... "Good Morning Heartache" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 on January 13th, 1973; eventually it peaked at #34 and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100... The song was originally recorded by Billie Holiday in 1946 and appeared on her 1956 album 'Lady Sings The Blues'...

BECAUSE LIZA MINELLI'S MOTHER WAS JUDY GARLAND AND HER FATHER WAS VINCENT MINELLI AND DIANA ROSS WAS JUST A POOR BLACK GIRL FROM THE GHETTO-WE ALL KNOW THAT YOU DESERVED THAT OSCAR DIANA -YOU HAVE A BILLION TIMES MORE TALENT IN SINGING AND ACTING THAN LIZA MINELLI COULD EVER HAVE -YOURE THE BEST DIANA!

Are you sure her legal troubles started in the 30s. 1936, Billie was 21. I read that her problems started much later. The scene in general was pretty f***ed up. Clearly this was not overacting. Diana did a good job doing that extremely difficult scene. It's clearly a drug withdrawal.

as one who has listened to and owns virtually all of lady day's recordings with the exception of her artie shaw recordings and read countless biographies of her including her own, i cringed when i saw this movie because it barely resembled anything of lady's life. the manufactured "love story" between billie and louis mckay was laughable as he was nowhere the romantic dashing figure portrayed by billie dee williams, and who the hell was richard pryor supposed to be? piano man? give me a break!

why didn't the screenwriter do some REAL research and include lady's musical soulmate lester young? billie holiday's life story deserved so much better than this manufactured whitewash which was given berry gordy's seal of approval. the soundtrack i will admit is excellent and does convey the spirit and feeling of billie holiday and her marvellous artistry. if you want to know the REAL lady day, read her autobiography or other books about her but i can't in good conscience recommend this movie.

It had nothing to do with parents! Liza won because the quality of 'Cabaret' was far superior to that of 'Lady Sings The Blues'. Diana brought screen presence and magic to the role, as did Liza. But the photography, the other performances, were far more polished in 'Cabaret'. Sorry, Liza is far more disciplined than her great mother was. Diana, was a social icon who bridged a gap for black and white to come together,it could've gone to either, but give Liza her props, she earned it
