It was a different universe back then. The Supremes weren't just a singing group, they were THE group that opened the door to the exclusive, top-flight supper clubs for all the other top billing Motown acts back in the day. Berry Gordy spent a LOT of time and money on polishing them up so they would appeal to cross-over audiences everywhere. Diana Ross wrote in her book that all of those wigs and gowns they wore were very expensive, and every one of their dance moves was so carefully choreographed that she still remembers them even now. It wasn't an accident or a coincidence that they became so successful. Gordy's songwriters gave them the best songs. None of the Caucasian girl groups back then moved, sang, or dressed like them, and none of the other R&B girl groups were as glamorous. They had no real competition during the mid to late 60s, except for The Beatles. We don't see women looking like this anymore because of feminism, destruction of our culture and standards, and obesity. The new standards state that what used to be beautiful is now ugly, and that what used to be ugly is now normal and acceptable. Class, dignity, and pride of appearance have all been discarded for modernity.

Yes, even for the BRIEF time that they were announced as "Diana" Ross and The Supremes" on record and by television hosts, the general public still called them as they were then and are still now.............THE SUPREMES! My comment was addressed to the person who was ignoring the group and commenting on Diane as though she was the only one who was "elegance and beauty personified." In fact, that's actually funny because, of the three (or 4 if Cindy was considered), it was Mary who was generally believed to be the beauty, never Diane! As for Diana Ross and The Supremes, isn't it the proof in the pudding that the group was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and given a lifetime Grammy award as THE SUPREMES??????????? That should tell you how much attention was placed on the brief period of "Diana Ross and The Supremes." I can barely bring myself to call them that..........never could! Obviously, it was a bone of contention for the fans THEN...........and still is!

Sometimes, a Motown studio group called the Andantes backed up Diana in the studio instead of Mary and Flo/Cindy. If that was the case with this song, that could explain the better quality on the TV show. Example: The "Supremes" recorded both the Christmas song called "Joy to the World" and the Three Dog Night hit with the same title. No Supreme appeared on both recordings. Diana did the Christmas song with the Andantes. By the time they did the Three Dog Night song, paired with the Four Tops, she had left the group.

@@davonchesmith9688 I agree. They are better here. According to Lamont Dozier's autobiography, the last time the original Supremes were in the studio with him was for "In and Out Love." Forever Came Today was recorded after Lamont stopped showing up at Motown so he was not aware of the Andantes being used on the recording of Forever Came Today. He was not sure why the Andantes were used since they had not been used on any of the prior Supremes recordings that he oversaw in the studio.
@randeman Жыл бұрын
@@davonchesmith9688 Actually, no...they aren't. If you'll listen carefully to the background vocals on the original recording, you'll hear the Andantes (and how Gordy ever thought they were even remotely comparable to Cindy and Mary's vocals is a mystery). After listening to the original recording, listen to this recording. It's glaringly obvious that it's the Andantes, most likely recorded. Another dead give away is the fact that Diana is using a microphone. Neither Cindy nor Mary are using one, nor are there mikes on their gowns. You might argue, perhaps, that there is a boom mike out of frame. But then why would Diana need one? No, the real evidence is comparing Mary and Cindy's vocals in earlier songs to this one. @@enricodrubio6645oh shut up. We don’t always have to include everyone in a group. If they think she beautiful. Then she is the only one they are talking about. If they wanted to include all three they would have. I can’t stand when some of you do that. Oh they are all crap. Not everyone would agree on that.

I can't think of any other female group who topped THE SUPREMES. And they never had one bad hit. Almost everyone made No. #1 on the charts.

A little trivia: in spite of all their success neither Diana Ross nor The Supremes have ever won a Grammy. Something wrong here.

Okay, in comparison to that, THE WHO never had a number one hit, yet sold millions of albums. Yet, THE SUPREMES were Motown legends.
@Maatization8 күн бұрын
@@Jjonathanhart The Supremes were pop music legends...people always put them in the category of Motown when they were the most successful American group of all time. I think the "best of Motown" thing is a way to not say that. I don't think that's what you're doing but rock critics and the Rolling Stone music critics will never admit that. They had 12 number ones a record never broken in this country.

There may have been bitterness between them after Gordy pushed Diana to lead, but he was absolutely correct. She had and still has superstar charisma that made them into the megastars of that decade, as big or bigger than the Beatles, turning out hit after hit songs that were some of the best written songs ever, they hold up with time, are still produced by current artists. They were the conversation the following morning at the water cooler. I still think it was Diana’s star power that sealed the deal. Saw her in August and she still thrills packed crowds when she enters the stage. She is legend!
@Maatization Жыл бұрын
I agree, but Gordy didn't push her to the lead. She wanted to be lead and when Where Did Our Love Go hit # one that sealed the deal and there was no stopping them. Saying he pushed her goes along with the narrative that he was somehow unfair to the others by "pushing her to the lead"
