The Motown Sound had the complete package, great singers, musicians and songwriters. This music has staying power. I can listen to this music over and over. The Supreme's were absolutely amazing but the songwriting of Holland Dozier and Holland really made them what they were. They wrote 10 of their 12 number one's !

chucksoup7 Tell that one to the Ross fans? They think she made the group. She made shit. (Googly Eyes).
@jobucats21666 жыл бұрын
You mean, tell that to the Ross haters who keep believing it was Florence, an excellent and beautiful background singer, deserved to be the lead singer since it was she who put the group together. The Ross fans just know that Supremes were able to attain success in more than just pop music due to Diana Ross and her voice, drive, and charisma. As a group limited to the just the typical r&b girl group sound of the time, Florence and the Supremes may have had some success. Diana took that shit and made a pretty impressive career with it, I would say. Ok...waiting...waiting for it....."her success and longevity is due to sleeping with the boss."

This was written by the Motown songwriting team Holland/Dozier/Holland. Lamont Dozier got the idea for the title after an argument with his girlfriend. In the heat of battle, he yelled, "Stop in the name of love." They both started laughing and Dozier knew a line that corny had to be a song title. Great Supremes song! Thanks for posting. Holland Dozier and Holland songwriters extraordinaire. The Supremes three beautiful women singing beautiful harmonies and Diana Ross oh what a lovely lead voice! I love all good music, but give credit where its due. I may be white, but the African American music traditions in this country are the foundations for our greatness musically. I just wish rap and this stuff never had happened or had happened without all the negative lyrics. Today I still love what they call R&B and quite frankly a few years down the road there may be a huge melting pot musical revelation. I love this song. Classic and classy.

I am so glad that people are starting to appreciate all of the Supremes. I am so grateful that this video exists, it showcases all of them. Florence is so charismatic she almosts steals the moment from Diana...and was singing background. I'm also ecstatic that so many people see and recognize the aura and contribution that FLORENCE BALLARD made to the group. Not long after this record was released Berry Gordy and the hierarchy at Motown began to systematically start to emphasize and push Diana Ross out into the forefront. They also began to play one against the other so that they would not entertain the idea of signing with another label. If Florence had only had the tenacity to wait until Diana left to begin to her solo career she would have been one of the biggest stars in the industry. There was enough success for both of them to have had enormous careers. An interesting fact about the group...upon seeing the Supremes perform their act at the Copa, producers were trying to persuade Gordy to allow either a Broadway show or movie showcasing Florence's charisma. Berry not only did not allow it, he never even discussed the possibility to Florence and didn't mention it to either Mary or even Diana concerning their interest in Florence. Sammy Davis was crazy about Florence He just loved the personality of her when it came to the patter of remarks she made between songs when the played the Copa. By the time they had engagements in Vegas, Motown had most definitely decided to replace Florence. At the first attempt, management gave B Gordy the ultimatum if there was no Florence in the act...then there was no Supremes performance at all. Not telling any of the girls about this...Berry brought Florence back pretending to give Florence "a second chance". Just imagine how soaring her career could have been!!

I am sorry for the Florence fans who are Diana-haters that Florence was not made to be the lead singer. If Diana had only left the Supremes earlier, maybe Florence could have stepped in as the lead singer and taken them to even greater heights of success than they had with Diana. My opinion is "NO," however maybe so. I am sure Diana, while maybe not as rapidly, would have eventually reached the levels of longevity and success that she has had.

And if it wasn't for Diana Ross being the lead singer of the Supremes, the group PROBABLY wouldn't have had anywhere near the success they had and the world PROBABLY would never have known who any of the ladies were. Note that after Diana left, while the Supremes did have some success, they were not playing the same type of major venues nor participating on the big tv specials and programs as they did with Diana.
