Margot Fonteyn wrote in her 1977 autobiography that The Firebird would have been a wonderful vehicle for their [Russian/Soviet] ballerinas. Now that the Cold War is over and Russian ballet companies can dance whatever they want, how wonderful to see that Fonteyn was proven right.

The ballet is always danced to the original score - The Firebird Ballet Score in 2 Acts, 1910, which is a bit different and longer than the ballet suite for orchestra :)

always thought it was interesting how the oriental and mysterious 'other', is represented by the firebird, yet she dances in the most traditional and classical style. Perhaps for the Russians the 'other' was Europe and the West? Thanks for the post though, vishneva always dances with such elegance.

You're wrong. The music works perfectly for the dance, since Prokofiev composed it expressly to be danced!!

This is not Balanchine, it's Mikhail Fokine :)

hey, i'd like to thank you for posting this video. I'm doing A-level music and it really helps being able to see how the music is representing the ballet. Do you possibly know where i'd be able to find video clips for some of the other movements aswell? ps. which version of the firebird is this from because it sounds as if the dance of the firebird heard at the beginning has been totally changed from the version which i have (the ballet suite, 1945) James

@kkiimmiissiipp Yeah, I agree. I don't like Leanne Benjamin in general, but she is wonderful as the Firebird. When Prince Ivan catches Leanne's Firebird, she stares at him with dread, a terrified creature trying to take flight. Diana's Firebird seems drugged by comparison. Among Mariinsky dancers, Ekaterina Kondaurova is somewhat more successful in this role.

I wish Nina would have coached her. She is such a talented dancer! I just think she had a bad coach. She is missing the attack of the movement. She is a wild bird..... Not a swan. Kirov isn't very good doing ballet rousse repertoire except Les Sylphides

Me too think Nina Ananiashvili's interpretation is better

I never liked Kirov dancers doing firebird. They always look so weak. No fire! She is barely fighting back. I had a teacher who danced for Ballet Russe and he said there is no seduction, she is just trying to fight back to gain her freedom, hence th
