Having danced to Stravinsky (corp de ballet) - this brings back memories of a lot of sweat and consternation satisfying the choreographer and make it work. NOTHING is easy or can be taken for granted with Stravinsky - ever - time signatures can change and then change back within a movement. Merde!

He does a little, doesn't he! From what I understand, "Kashchei/Kastchei the Deathless" continues to age but remains "healthy" and alive due to a magical egg in which his soul/living essence is hidden; if that egg is broken, he dies. The name Kashchei/Kastchei is related to the Russian word кость [kostʹ], "bone" - likely describing his skeletal appearance. I'm pleased that this production incorporated that element,

And as a side note, you can really see the influence of Rimsky-Korsakov on Stravinsky's work.

+KingOfElectricNinjas You're thinking of 'Le Sacre de Printemps' not 'The Firebird'. Firebird was sufficiently trad not to upset the audience too much!

@@hyweljames788 Yeah, that and Petruschka. The Rite of Spring ( Le Sacre du printemps ) created the riot not cause of the music, but because of the plot and the choreography which heavily included stomping and loud noises from the ballet dancers themselves.

Yes indeed it did.... and so did Petruchka ---- Dancing to any of the modernist works - like Igor Stavinsky is very difficult. If you listen to Firebird, you can hear the complexity - now you have to learn the choreography, which changes time signature in odd places, the tempi can change rapidly - So very different than the old classics like "Giselle", Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake", La Bayadère, or Don Quixote as examples. Merde!
